I have a bunch. But after I now have had Shirley (my K100) for a year, the wish for a K1 has grown stronger. And so, I have decided that before end of the year it will be a K1 (and if I can't find one I will have to settle for a Striple)

There is just something about a bike that is so ugly that it is cool.

Yeah,no one ''gets'' the bikes I ride either.Back in the early '70's when everyone was into choppers and chrome,I rode a matt black cafe Triton,or a road going MX bike,or a single when men rode twins. Now on a BMW people think a flat twin looks strange...those who know BMW's wonder why I have a 650 and not a bigger engine version.Very few have a clue about a streettracker.

For a company with a reputation for making boring bikes the K1 was way out there....so far out there people just ignored it.A little too far out there for someone who likes to fade into the background.

Yep. The K1 was before it's time. Do you know that it is the bike with the lowest wind coeficient (sp?) as it was tested in a wind tunnel and that is the reason for that front guard.

There was regulations why the K1 was limited to 100Hp's. They could easily have squeezed out more. And she deserves it. She is designed for 250k+. A simple chip change will add a few...

The problem with seeing photos of bikes is that it doesnt really do it justice. Bikes that I have previously thought were hideous turn out to be quite awesome in the flesh, especially when you add that "sound" factor or even the experience of riding one for yourself, your mind can be changed.
People have said some rather rude things about my Gladys. But when they see her in the flesh, or even take it for a spin, they generally have a change of heart.

Well after declaring that "I would never own one of those ugly Multistradas as long as my ass points to the ground"...I went and bought one yesterday. 04 1000DS in red. I traded my F650 beemer and a Hyosung 250 for it. Took it over the "takas" today....farrrrrk what a bike....Like the Beemer on steroids and with Staintune mufflers make a real ducati sound. Another keeper for my expanding ducati stable. Cant see the fugly front fairing from the riders seat, but its looks are growing on me.

The XLV750 was another bike people didn't get,and I'd like another one day.I was behind a Buell one day going up some tight twisties, and I was nearly running into his back tyre on every corner.Later at the next pub he looked at the Honda a bit puzzled and asked how did it handle with such a big front wheel and all the weight so high? If he had of looked in his mirror he would of seen his stupid sportsbike was getting in my way.The best bike I've had for going up saddles....The Forgotten Highway was fun on that bike.

Years ago, I read a series of limericks in a bike magazine about the "notorious " bikes of the day - like the Munch Mammut and the Yamaha 500 mx etc. The one about your choice (all 1500 cc's of it) went....

A magnificent bike was the Munch
Of cc's it had, oh a bunch
And the view from the seat
Was Germanically neat
But a Z1 would eat it for lunch.

Yep it is. Came with a set of colour matching blue leathers (need to loose some weight...), the original heated vest (yep, BMW was sooo before their time: You plug it in and you are warm as toast! Just need to remember to unplug when you get off the bike...), fitted performance chip, new tyres, rear hump, tank bag, rear bag with side bags, manuals and all original books. There is a whisper that motor was sent back to Germany for serious modifications by first owner (I am only 3'rd owner). Will find out.

She is like my K100 on steroids!

If I could I'd own every single one, I don't think there's a bike out there that truly has no appeal to me.

I can sort of relate to that: When I was studying and needed to find some extra dollars to pay the bills, I used to buy old bikes, fix them up and make a dollar or two out of selling them. But each time I had completed a bike and it was ready to sell I did not want to part with it. And we are talking about stuff like 125cc 2 stroke dirt bikes, 250cc learner bikes etc. I would sit watching my work while having a beer and after having been for a ride or two with the bike and found my self thinking: "She is quite fun actually. I might not sell her. I just fix up another one and keep this one..." But then I used to come to my senses. Or as it was: My oldest boy used to wake me up from my draming with his: "FFS dad, this is not one of your customs. Your old mates would laugh at you if they knew that you are getting all sentimental over a old 250cc jappa..."

Now now. The K1 was made in late 80's. Only 6921 made. Broke all rules re how a bike was to be made. The BMW's then already had things that other manufacturers still are struggling with. Example: indicator auto turn off. With 2 separate circuits to turn off. 1. After a set amount of meters it automatically turns off. 2. Turns off after a set amount of seconds. Whatever comes first. Then there is ABS, fuel injection.

A bike that is so uncool that it is now cool. And rides like a dream. The bodywork, apart from giving it the ultra low wind drag of 0.34, also creates down force when up in speed making it hug the road. Using 0.6l/100k.

K1 had that in the *late* 80s? My GS1100 had that in the *early* 80s (1982) - two circuits as described, below a certain speed they turn off after a set time, over that speed they turn off after a set distance. Little switch in the speedo for the distance measurement thing.

Likewise Kawasaki had fuel injection on the Kawasaki GPZ1100 from 1981

Not all innovation comes from BMW.

And as for a weird bike that no one got, how about the Morbidelli V8. Cool as engine and driveline topped by the shit ugliest bodywork ever put on ANYTHING.

I'd strongly disagree with a couple being on that list.
1997 Bimota V-Due
2002 Ducati 999

They look pretty good to me.

True. Thou same was already fitted on all K models that came out in beginning of 80's.

First of all congrats to Conquestador for bringing a new member into his family...I also like the K1....The blue and yellow colour scheme is the one that does it for me...

How about this one - I'm not particularly keen on the bike itself, but I like the engine:

The question re that bike is how would you go with the RUC, would you need to pay that?

Bikes on my list that I want....

Honda CX500 (nothing wrong with the old maggots, well a lot wrong but thats what makes em neat)
Benelli TNT 1130....dead sexy
215994

Suzuki KE5...a rotary yes.....nice

Suzuki GS850
Honda CB 650 custom....

Plenty of others I would like...mainly 70s and 80s jappas...

Most people look at me weird when I say I like the idea of a trike.
Here's one that I think is very cool.

Probably need mudguards and a tall aerial with a freak flag on it before they would licence it for NZ roads.
I'd ride it. :Punk:

More Snaefell action here, including construction

Although not really of the theme, I wouldn't be caught dead riding/driving this thing.

The first trike reminds me of a tractor.

thought you liked being able to get around corners reasonably quickly

It'd cost you an arm & a leg to keep the Hoosiers on the sod
and hopefully you wouldn't be like that sod that was at the woodstock a few years ago with that big caramel coloured tank  starting up every 30mins then letting it idle in the small wee hours

Least with the Krauser you still sit on the thing like a bike

Yeah whats up with that.
They call the post "Top 10 ugliest bikes".......then put a bike in because it doesn't run.
Something tells me intelligence is lacking if they think Ugly = not working.

I think the VDUE is one of the sexiest bikes ever made. Would love to have one instead of a TV in the living room.

Watched Raisin Arizona on TV 4 today with Nicholas Cage and a Body Hunter Bikie. A brilliant movie that I did see many years ago. My mind then went to Ghost Rider 2 where Cage rides a VMax. And I remembered the VMax I did see at last w/e's Bay MC One Night Stand. I had always considered a VMax as something I would never ride. But as I was looking at the bike I could hear her say: "I don't give a fuck what you think!" And I realised that there was an attitude in a VMax that I can appreciate. And she would need to be mentioned here

I wear that badge with the pride and respect it deserves!
First VMax came out in 1985. It stayed basically unchanged to 2008. The new version, from 2009, is still made today. Not bad for a huge and heavy bike that many would have considered as something that never would sell... Yep, I like that many don't get it!

And.... the other is the Munch Mammuth. The old original one with a NSU 4 cylinder car motor. They had to replace the spoked wheels with full magnesium ones as the bike would rip them outta the rim. The fastest production motorcycle in its time.

One day...

Gosh that's what I lusted after once - but then I also thought a Velocette Noddy bike had potential.

It was superceded when a 74 MV 750 transfixed me on start up back in the 70's

Hey HDC, I like your thinking. I was just about to say I'd like a Honda CBX1000, love the look of that wide wide engine and that long rocker cover that seems to go right across the bike. I've heard they have a suspect crankshaft.

But I liked the look of the Benelli Sei, and they did a 900 later in the model life I think.

My boss here in QLD is renovating a Kwaka 6 cylinder, 1400?

There is no logic in what people think is a nice good looking motorbike.
Just as well we all like different looks, or else we would all be married to the same girl........................... or boy
