Anyone been on the beach with there bike lately. Been ten years since I was up that way. How is the entrance to the beach at Waipapakauri? Anything changed up at the top in Te paki stream? Any info appreciated.Getting out of Queenstown for a bit of a tour up north with my 2 girlfriends. One human one a KTM 990.
Cheers

Was there in 1979-80. Camped at Waipapakauri and went up and back down the entire beach on my Yamaha Ag100, with a spare can of gas strapped to the back. Had fun trying to ride up the sand dunes at Te paki stream. Access was good as gold then if that helps!!! Probably has not changed much in the last 30 years.........

Rode down it from about half way (can't remember the name) and got of it at Waipapakauri in January on a FZR 1000 with no issues. Old man did top to bottom on a R11GS 2up 3 weekends ago just fine.

Watch out for little streams though and stay alert.

edit : Try to ride with your visor closed if you wear sunnies. Salt is easier to clean of a visor with gloves on than trying to smudge your glasses clean with gloves.

The beach is still a legally designated road and access is available at Waipapakauri. There is a speed limit but I never could remember what it was. It was 100kmh but don't quote me.

A mate has just finished working up there on the Cape Reinga road. Acc to him the last of the seal was completed last week.

recommend you go up the beach and then you get a free bit of a bike wash thru Te Paki stream which is very dry at the moment.

I was up there just after Easter. Was considering taking the car up the beach until we (the tour bus I was in) came to the massive hole you have to go through hopping off the beach at the Te Paki end.
A bike could probably fit around the side, but I'd recommend parking at the carpark at Te Paki and having a look before taking the bike on (so you'd be heading back down the beach).
A Merc got stuck in the hole the day before we went up. The car was fucked.
The limit is 100kmh too. The entrance at Waipapakauri is sweet though.
