View Full Version : Taranaki: Forgotten Highway ride 23 May 2010

25th April 2010, 22:46
About time a decent ride got out and about and forgotten highway is just begging to be done. Mrs c and I will be out and about this week in may and on the Sunday will be doing the forgotten highway.
Meet in Taumaranui at 11am and heading west to stratford.
Being 2up speeds will be more repectably towards the nearer spectrum of the limits imposed by law and being Mrs C's first run through FH will probably stop for plenty of photos.
Who wants to supervise us?

There's some beaut gravel roads out that way too.

i bet there are.. but being allergic to gravel ill stick to the main route and close my eyes for the 14km of hard packed gravel that has to be ridden

Enjoy the ride - this is an amazing road to ride. Did it last year on my 250 and didn't even know it existed until I was on it. It was breath taking. Make sure you got your full tank of gas - 150k between stations. And take your camera - some stunning views over the saddles. Very jealous, would love to visit that piece of road again!
I did this road as part of the C1KC 2008 also on my 250 cruiser just after I got my restricted license, I rode that part of the leg with two experienced fast riders and followed their road line, doing so I found it the most enjoyable part of the 1000km ride, I would love to do it again on my current bike.
I will see if I can get the planets aligned for this ride.

Gees you boys sure know how to tempt a girl don't you? Would LOVE to do it again, especialy with some other riders. O.K - lets say if I have my new bike in time I'd love to come along. If not, will just have to envy you all as my 250 ran short of gas about 10k before the station. And that was some very tame riding to get me throught the most ot it.
What great motivation to hurry up and get a new beast! Will be a fantastic ride, thats for sure.

Re gas station,my first ride I went from Hawera to Stratford thought hmmm tank 2/3 full at Stratty, thought can fill up at Toko(10km away)but no garage closed Saturday arvo(was 12.45ish)so got to Whanga, and on return to Stratford was riding economically as the old GSX750 went crappy on reserve. Can't rely on garage at Toko being open or having fuel,as various owners keep gas or not.
The ideal off venture is turn to Makahu at Strathmore intersection, nice windy road and is the start of walkway to W(h)anganui river, used to be papa road and tricky in winter, but now pretty much sealed to carpark.

Was going to go on the XR, turning off at porangahau and following the beach up but took the ZX10 instead (ZX10 doesn't handle very well on beaches). Its 200 from Masterton to Waipuk, but quite a bit more if you take the longer (unsealed) route. Went to the One Night stand up Route 52, then out to Blackhead, up Long Range Rd and straight to the site. Was someting like 350k without a gas station (by choice of course, I could easily have poped into Waipuk on the way, but wheres the fun in that).
How far Norf are you going during that week Lance?

the super overall plan at the moment goes just like this!
Get to Taumarnui any way you like SUNDAY morning ... (we will be leaving Taupo at some stage in the morning and probably doing top of lake and SH41 (or is it 47???) FIIK.. not important.
We PLAN to leave Taumarnui at 11am. Which means we will probably end up leaving at 11.30-11.45 and doing FH at a leisurely pace. Photo shoot at Tunnel is complusory and stop for a bite at the pub.
Then when we get to Stratford. Mrs C and I are going to disappear and everyone else can do whatever they want.
Im riding it anyhow.. We have to get from Taupo to New Plymouth on Sunday morning. The weather looks ok at the moment. few showers here and there but I dont think its going to turn to much tbh (fingers crossed)

Sucks Alright !! however I need to sort me shit out cause come 5/6 I'm on holiday for 2 weeks & this time I'll be touring around the lower basin :Punk::Punk:( Wgtn, Masterton, Fielding up to Napier region etc,etc ) Might go check out Gentle Annie see how the sealing is getting on... I'll be based in Pukerua Bay for the 2 weeks so day trips mostly with the odd overnihgter somewhere no real agenda at this stage... :scooter::scooter: Will be heading down to Wgtn via Sh43 anyways so I still get to do it just not with a KB crew
PS whats the road from Kimbolton to Ohingaiti like ( Sealed unsealed ) ?? Is it better to head to Ohingaiti or to Mangaweka ?? same again whats the road surface like ?? Any other ideas on roads down there would be greatly appreciated...
cheers

kimbolton to ohingaiti is pembleton rd.. magic piece of road! I love it.. and yes its sealed. mangawekas are prone to rockfalls and stuff but after you get out of the shite there is a really fast backroad which is awesome. cant go wrong with either! Was looking to be a good day had a great run in from Stratford after Tx chat with Cowboyz say we would meet him at the tunnel,
After arriving 12:25 I said to Melissa they are late, the reply was "whats new with cowboyz" we waited for 45 minutes and decided to head back to whongamomona for a very small flat white but the burger was Mint, spoke to other riders who had come from Taumarinui and ask if they had seen Cowboyz,no one had and they hadn't even seen any bikes there so we decide to head back to Stratford, knowing something wasn't right but with no phone coverage in that area we didn't have much choice and needed to be home by 5.....
So with the trip out being even better we had a great days ride even down to the point of being pulled over.... aren't policemen wonderful people ....no ticket:innocent:must of been that part of Melissa saying we are missing some friends they were meant to meet us and didn't show up and we have no idea why
we knew when I got meanies tx just before 4 that he sent at 12:01
So get well Lance and bobbie just wasn't a mint day after all............ we even left a message at the tunnel for you  Pic's to Come

well.. day started early as looked real promising. headed out from Huka falls lodge in the mist and fog. Visibility was less than about 2m but had a fun ride over weatern bay road, western access and some fantastic scenery on SH41. Got to Taumaranui about 10.15 for some breaky.
Waited round for Bandit rider, Brian, sonic and Mrs Sonic before heading towards the FH.
Thinking back it was all a comedy of errors as such - just not that funny.
I was so keen to get going I didnt align my earpiece on the intercom properly, my leathers were 3/4 done up (under my jersey I was wearing) and my helmet was just wrong.
As we headed up the hill (like still in town!) I was messing around trying to get my helmet right and feeling rather uncomfortable. So as I was trying to get myself sorted instead of stopping and doing it properly I was sorting everything out on the fly. So wasnt paying any attention to where I was riding. So I was drifting across the road. When I got round to actually putting my mine on the job I was right on the white line and a car was coming down the hill.. I was riding one handed and steered the bike back into my lane thinking to myself.. This is silly. Right then the front gave a bit of a wobble... I did a knee jerk reaction and all of a sudden the bike flicked out from under us and we were sliding down the road.
I was REALLY surprised to be sliding down the road. It was like... WTF just happened??
Mrs C fell really hard and rolled like FOREVER!
I slid for about 20 m before leaving the 9 to finish the journey on its own.
ambo showed up and checked us out. I hate doctors and am fine so Mrs C was the min prioirty. She has torn the tendon in her middle finger. Her gear really stood up to the knock and mine did an awesome job of being destroyed while leaving me in tact.
so after a few hours in the emergency dept of taumarnui hospital we were released and headed back to cafe for coffee and a moan. Really really annoyed about throwing bike away. Especially being as it was my own stupid fault. Feels even worse with the 'what could have beens' with wifey on the back.
Huge ... and I mean HUGE thanks to BR,Brian, Sonic and Mrs Sonic for the help at the scene. No one paniced.. No unnessacceary running round in circles. Everyone held there head and got all the important boxes checked. Big Sorry to sonic for making him miss the FH ride. It really wasnt surposed to go like this....
And last but by no means least, Meanie! Always there to lend a hand even if it meant driving 3hours (ahem) out of his way to pick up some muppet who cant ride round corners. Told you I was gonna get you to FH today!
Anyhow, pics here. feel free to surmise about the weather, slippery roads, white lines or anything else that proves without a doubt that this wasnt my fault- its the kiwibiker way - but having clicked over 150,000k on the 9 in some way worse conditions than today I cant help but think if I had taken 2 mins to check myself and pay attention I would still be on holiday sitting in a spa somewhere in Taranaki trying to get lucky with my wife.

Rough day mate, sucks for sure. glad to see you're not having a sense of humour failure about it which would be understandable, all told both you and Mrs C got out of it pretty well, even the bikes in not to bad really. You won't get too much shit from me any way... well not for a little while...

Mrs C I hope you get plenty of mileage out of that injury. :)

Bit of a shit alright! But I'm really pleased you're both OK and I think the 9 will live to see another road. There may be a spare Triumph lying (oops) around when you get the withdrawals. Meanie rocks!

Well done to those involved in rescue, pretty easy to panic and so forth.Worst part of the highway is phone coverage.
Worst part of having partner on the back is the what if scenario, and for me is always in the back of my mind, and mostly think when home safely that was fun and a silent thank you to biking god/s.
Hope the insurance is simple and straight forward, and you both heal fast, bruises can be a pain in ass.

Bugger Cowboyz and Mrs C - never met you Guys but have followed many of your rides here, and stoked you both are Oki Doki - or relatively so. That can be a greasy prick of a hill right there - handy to the Hospital but!
All the best for a good digit-al recovery and may your insurance hassles be small 'uns
