Does anyone know where I can get some of the old-type oval plastic number plates? Can't seem to find anywhere that sells them now (with modern bikes all having built in plates.)

It's easier to make them up out of ply - as I've been doing for my classic racers since the 80s - than to search around for them. I believe none have been available commercially for many years.

In case anyone wanted to know I found some on a US website - the real plastic thing. Petej I can't make plywood ones as the side plates have to bend.

My mate brought one at a motorbike shop in Levin about 6 weeks ago, he was using it for his VMX bike, i am sure they still have more in stock, they are on the main road state hi-way 1

You bloody ripper - just called them and yes they stock them, can get in different colours, square and oval et al. They're going to give me a call back today with detail on what stock they have in (he was busy with a customer at the time). Levin Motorcycle Centre, phone number is 06 368 3924 (in case anyone else wants any).
Edit: They phoned back, they are going to get some more oval white coloured ones in and phone me in the week. I've ordered 4. Sweet.
Edit 2: Plates bought today - 4 round and one square.
