View Full Version : New bike or financial sense

This is driving me goddam crazy...
If you have read THIS (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/121570-Test-ride) thread, you will know that I was stupid enough to take a 600 gixxer out for a test ride. Now I have lost interest in the SV and want the gixxer. But I have to spend money to make the swap - at a time when I am under some financial duress...There is some (most actually) of the money there, but I should use it to reduce my bank loan. AND I have to find a couple G of my own on top of that...this is keeping me awake at night - part of me says "ahhh fukkit - get the friggin bike before you die or get too old to ride it" and the other bit (carping bloody bit) says "be sensible - you'll regret spending that money on yet another toy..."
So, dear KB'ers, what would your collective wisdom advise? Financial security or new bike?
Votes please...

Very tricky.....follow your head or your heart? Geez man, personally for me, I'd be inclined to think - fuck it - buy the bike, you have only one life and it needs to be enjoyed. but then again, you do already have a bike.
Sounds a little like you got a bit tired of the wife, went and a had a wee flirt and now your commitment is being tested  (sorry)
What is financial security? Say you buy the bike and 6 months later you have a financial crisis, you can always downgrade .... go on have a play. enjoy yourself before you do get too old to enjoy it. This is why you work hard...to enjoy the rewards. You deserve it.

It's the things you wanted to do, but didn't, that you will regret. Usually.
At least the Gixxer will be in the 'cheaper' rego bracket...

If I didn't have to answer to the wife and provide a certain level of comfort for the kids, I'd sell our house, buy a shed, fill it with toys, and live in the shed along side all my wicked shit.

On one hand, it's not like they are going to stop making GSXR600's so you could hold off and get into a better financial position...
However...
...life is for living. It sounds like you are in a position to make a purchase and still service your loan etc (otherwise you wouldn't have even asked the question). The desire is here now, the time is right, you are alive, still able to ride, so my vote is buy the bike. Tomorrow your life could change in so many possible ways that rule out ever riding again, or buying a bike being put off until a lot longer. So, carpe diem.

I agree with EJ.
its not like you dont have a bike atm, the SV is still epic and functioning. so you could hold the bike off until you're financial issues are over. then get a gixxer so you can properly enjoy it.
What good is a gixxer if you dont have the gas money for it? :D

Jesus - I feel your pain. I am thinking of trading my SV on something I can't afford either.
I am leaning towards - fuck it, just do it. But that is because I am normally a - don't spend it if you don't have it kinda guy.
And having two kids now I fear I will never just have the money again! So at some point I will have to stretch the finances if I want to get another bike.
You can always sell the bike again - sure you will lose a bit of money. Only you will know if that is enough to make things really bad for yourself.

You can't buy time. You can however buy a bike. You can also get more money. Of course you need to weigh that against just how big the bank loan is.
Do you have too many (unused) toys that could be sold to make inroads on the bank loan? I know I need to get rid of some of the impulse crap that I've brought, but I can never be bothered with the hassle of posting it etc..
Oh, and ride the 750 too. And take an early GSXR1000 for a hoon, you'll love the torque to bits.

I went through this pain a couple of years ago. I was then fortunate enough to get told to go faark myself by my crap employer, which was just enough cash to buy the bike I was struggling to justify.

Wasn't it you that posted a few months back that you had made the final payments on the SV?
I'd say if you still have the same kind of repayment coin available, and the other financial circumstances haven't changed then go for it. The way I look at mine is "If i got really in the shit and had to quit at half market value for a quick sale, other than the pain of losing that money would it clear any debt owed?" (or 75% of market value, or whatever risk you are prepared to carry).

I hate to be the voice of reason but if you are stressed about money now, have a good bike already, and have a bank loan, you could end up hating the bike if you loan further money to get it. I say pay off your loan...then sort a new bike. It is easy to save, even just a little, when you are debt free, but it is fuckin hard to get ahead when you even have the smallest loan over your head.

Yeah that was me. But I sure don't want to deal with MTF again - too expensive. But i wouldn't have to do that - just use ALL of the bank funds instead of giving a little back...

The current bike has 42,600km on it. Another year will increase that to around 60,000k. At which point it would lose lotsa value. Rather flick it now...

This is true...and using this reasoning to do/buy something is why some people get in the shit ;) also why I've had to "retrain" the wife as to not going out and buying whatever she wants because "you only live once". I'm not talking girly things like clothes, I'm talking shit like cars.
But I do totally agree. You don't want to not do something and continue life kicking yourself saying I should of. I have regretted doing a few things (that cost money) but managed to sort through it without too much difficulty. It's when you really stretch yourself that the shit will hit the fan eventually.

A car salesman once told me that when he thought he had someone about cornered, he'd ask them what he could do that would make them sign up there and then. Bike shops want to sell bikes, maybe ring them and say take another grand off the price (or another grand for your bike, or whatever) and the deal is done, and see what happens. Worst they can do is laugh in your face... and if you're that close that it's hard to pick either way, see if they can essentially make the decision for you (cause it sounds like it's all about the money). And take the 750 for a hoon, and an early model GSXR1000, you'll loooooove the torque (and they're cheap!).

You believed a car salesman? Especially that one lol? But yes, you are right. The saying 'If I couldja would ya?' comes to mind. In other words, 'if I could only pay x amount, would you accept it'. Except we used it in reverse, 'if I could get you $200 more for your trade, would you sign up now?'.

Dont be so sure, get a price to swap on both bikes, take it away mull it over awhile,if the 750 isnt way outta the realms of possiblity then ring them back and let them know thats the one you prefer but $s the problem, tell them you are thinking of panning the whole thing and waiting awhile to save some more $ if the salesman is worth his salt he will ask what the difference figure needs to be to have you buy the 750,he probably wont like your answer but he may well come back with a cracker deal that you just have to take, who knows. They sell a unit you get a great deal.In my years selling both cars and bikes ive seen some pretty sweet deals done when the pressures on.Never forget that your in the drivers seat, you have money and they want it,they have a bike which they dont want, they need you to have it.Simple.

If you are financially spread thinly and have many commitments, then the Gixxer will probably stress you. 42,600 happy Km's - until that strumpet of a gixxer came along and turned your head, stroked your ego and caused inappropriate erections. She is only after your money, you know. Oh sure it seemed harmless at first, the odd smile, a sly glance in her direction, a relaxed laugh at a little joke shared.
What of the tags? Oh those tags, didn't you and the SV have so much fun collecting tags together, the fine spring mornings, the warm summer nights and those long autumn afternoons together, just the two of you, taking happy memories.
But no, you want the curves, those long legs, you hear her voice in your dreams, that those not so smitten would most likely call a high pitched whine.
She glistens there with her painted face, it's all for show you know, once she has you hooked the spots and blemishes will appear...
Ooops sorry - need a tissue now, maybe I'll go take her for a ride myself - you know she's that kind of girl...
So well put

I did try out the Daytona but found the seating a little too extreme for an old fulla...affordability was also a factor...

Fair enough, you gotta be comfy.
I find the low crouch possy of modern sprotsbikes great, suprisingly with my aches and pains and being an old fulla too.
But I'm not an all day tourer type, so could differ than eh.

Me too. Can't be having with this armchair position - I always fall asleep in recliner chairs...
Besides - in the sprotsbike position, you can leap off just before the bike goes over the cliff...

This one I found online somewhere gets close.

I'm with you on that one...well the bit about the seating being a bit extreme...not so much about being an 'old fulla'...
Congratulations on the new purchase, let me know if you're heading down this way ever and we'll catch up. I'll do like wise.
You won't be disappointed. (in the gixxer, not in meeting me...)

P.S what's a distribution block?

Swapping the heated grips etc from old bike to new bike...
Distribution block is a set of contacts to plug accessories into - like GPS's, heated grips, radar detectors etc...powered by a relay and switched from the ignition system. Mine lives under the seat - close to the battery.
Linky HERE (http://www.canyonchasers.net/shop/generic/relay.php). Well worth the hassle and easy enough to do. I meantasay - even I could do it...

The say the better part of valour is living to fight another day. When your financially down don't force yourself under - position yourself for when times are better.
Wait till things are starting to financially improve, then take the plunge.
EDIT: You'll be happy with the SV for a bit longer if you decide you'll be happy. This is purely a head thing!
EDIT EDIT: Too late, I see you have done the deed!
