CRF450 and CR125 taken from Gge in Tawa last night. CRF missing LHS radiator, CR painted matt black. 06 and 04 models respectively but not certain as it was a mate and his sons bikes. Any reports of suspect activity welcome - reward for identity of thieves.

I wonder how long it will be before cheap GPS locator systems come out. Need someone like Vodafone to offer a super low cost data plan for such a device (as it obviously only transmit a very small amount of data). Then a GPS unit could transmit it's co-ordinates over a cellular connection say once a day. I'd be happy to have it just email me with a link to Google Maps so I didn't have to pay for a monitoring centre. Obviously it would have to have its own battery so that it can run for a while without the bike running.
I'd rather have something like that then an alarm.
Actually a simple mod - it could just email me whenever it is more than 100m away from my house for more 24 hours. It's just emails, so I don't care if I get a couple of extra emails.
And it should be small, like the size of a cigarette packet, so it can be easily concealed on a bike.
The only ongoing cost would be the cellular data plan. The cost should be no more than $10/month.
Holy crap, I have just though of a money making idea! I bet it has already been done.

I think I have a solution almost figured out.
You can buy a Vodafone phone with built in GPS. Vodafone have a $10 a month plan which gives you 100MB of data (easily enough for email), or $1/day for up to 10MB of data (so if you had it check in every 3 days it would cost about $10/month).
http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-broadband/which-plan-is-right.jsp
Now just semi-permanently fit the mobile under the seat or on the bike somewhere. You could also use the mobile phone in an emergency. Wire it in (via a 12VDC car kit) into a switched ignition source. Get a phone with 5 days of standby time or so.
Now I just need someone to write me a cell phone app to send the email once a day, or when the phone moves away from its normal location. Luckily I know a few software developers ...
EDIT: Actually it would be cool if it could send a GoogleMap using the track option, to show everywhere it has been in the last 24 hours. That would be quite cool for looking at rides I had been on.
EDIT EDIT: The cheapest GPS phone appears to be the Nokia 3710 ($329 for on account customers, $449 otherwise).

there is a few units that you can use on dealextreme have a look. Also Vodafone have a hidden AVL plan that you could use for $12 per month.

Nice site Cheese,
Looks to me like one of these two would be the go,

You'd need one with a battery & it probably means leaving the bike battery on a trickle charger, but unless it's an MX bike can't see a crim working out what's going on :)

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.28710 looks the better one to me. Hide it in the airbox. As if a crim would clean an air filter.
Has anyone looked into the feasibility of data dots like HSV DNA have done? I haven't heard any comments on how good they are at tracking stolen parts but just another avenue to try I guess.
