View Full Version : Be warned, Auckland onramps are being targeted

This evening a bike cop was parked up in the triangle between onramp and motorway at Union St. pulling over every bike that split through the traffic. I was issued a warning after having my license checked. He told me that there have been a few near misses lately so they're starting to crack down.

Picking on bikers again?! Is it just splitting through slow moving traffic? Or splitting the stationary traffic waiting at onramp lights? (cos I thought that was OK)

not to be paranoid but, another thing to add is that during the day the cops are parked at the beginning of on ramps and shooting traffic from behind. so check your mirrors passing onramps when travelling the motorway.

On how it's being done? It falls under the law/s governing overtaking.

I couple of weeks ago I was splitting on the Harbour bridge, while the traffic was moving, passed a motorway patrol car....... wasnt an issue for them then. seems kind of unfair to pick on lane splitters "sometimes" and then sometimes not.

I hope on receipt of that ticket you told him to go fuck his mother.
Of all the shit that goes on, picking on a minority group for an action that does'nt effect anyone else (cept' for maybe a bruised ego), what a friggin joke.
Maybe a prtest ride in 1700 traffic, lane splitting the whole motorway is in order?! lol. Fucken ticket all of us ya baaaastards!

A cycle cop was also pulling people up on the Northern this morning. Poor bugger on the VFR prob didn't realise why we were all tukced back into traffic. At least when the cop got him we all got to get back to splitting.

I was told the issue was that I was to the right of the white line (single lane of traffic). He also thought I was a bit fast, although I prefer his words "a bit flash".
When I asked what the charge could be he replied that there were many things that apply but mentioned (not verbatim)
Not keeping wholly within your lane
Overtaking on a flush median
Using an emergency shoulder (if on the left)
Failing to stop for an onramp light
He even said that careless driving was a possibility.

I got the same list as well, which is why I kept it polite and just got the 150, assuming it could have been a fair bit more if items from the list were included, oh well ... guess it was bound to happen at some point

Sounds like a hypocritical cunt to me. I've followed a bike cop splitting to get through traffic, not responding anywhere. You ca'nt justify "cracking down" on people for something your own staff are fucken doing.

Sad as they are - the rules are pretty simple - if you pass on the left in the same lane as a moving vehicle it's against the road code.
On the right in the same lane is legal - and mostly impossible.

True, but it's not a necessity. I've been up to police/firecomm and listened in on both sides, and they struggle to find enough available cops to send on proper jobs as it is on a Tuesday morning......Do they really, in all honesty want bikes to fill another space in the line of traffic?

The good ol' catch all 'careless', eh...
He's correct on the last 3 in your list, but the first depends on the situation... if you're overtaking you're permitted to do so within the same lane as the vehicle you're overtaking provided you stay wholly within that lane and pass on the right signaling as required. You're also permitted to overtake in the lane either side as long as you're not passing on the left of a vehicle in your lane.

#1: Possibly.
#2: Bollocks if on the M'way.
#3: OK.
#4: Bikes do not have to stop for the onramp lights. Police have been informed of this and I carry a copy of that letter (posted on KB by Ixion, iirc)

'They' want us to observe the road code - not overtake on the left - indicate for three seconds when changing lanes - and observe due caution - approx 20kph faster than the traffic when splitting.
Don't shoot me - I'm just the messenger.
Probably some big wig with crowns on his epaulettes has been carved up on the on-ramp and 'wants something done about it'.

I got done last year? for dangerous lane change or some such, for doing as I see plenty of other bikes do, ducking in at the last minute from the NW to the southern motorway.
$150, no demerits (thankfully). It wasn't till afterwards I realised how lucky I had been. My bike was out of warrant or rego (ran out a week or so before), so could've been worse (would've got off that bit, but saved me the drama).
It's just a tax to pay sometimes for the privilege of riding your bike, getting wet, having cigarette butts thrown at you, abused by cage drivers, running a risk of injury, and having a great time while others wait in the queue. (I'd hate to have to drive a car to work everyday, but the one advantage is being able to pick up a decent coffee on the way there).

Splitting does not mean Carving Up....
And you can pass on the left, BUT ONLY IF the other vehicle is actually stopped.

That's about transit lanes, not stop lights on on ramps.

Ofetn true re right of same lane but there are exceptions. I split southbound on the Harbour Bridge clip-on every morning and would estimate that > 80% of the time I can pass on the right of the same lane because the left hand clipon lane is very wide. The rest of the time I obviously wait for a gap so I can use the the right hand lane without passing on the left of moving traffic...

Point of order, Mr Speaker - you are referring to Transit Lanes, not on-ramp signals.
Motorcycles (like everyone else) are required to stop at an on-ramp red light if they aren't using (or there isn't) a Transit Lane. The fact that motorcyles can use lane 1a has never caused me any concern with the local plod.
EDIT: Already covered.
S'funny, cos I happily filter past Police officers (both in traffic and on a watching brief) and I've never had a problem. There's even times when a Police car will make room for me filtering (and gets the same wave as any other car making room)
I would dare to suggest that perhaps the manner in which said "pinged" riders are riding is getting them noticed and ticketed.
IMH(f)O, near misses are often caused by someone riding like their trousers are on fire just as much as they're caused by a cager not looking

Quite true. My mistake and apologies.
I never stop for the on-ramp "flow" lights anyway. Car or bike. "Real" intersections are different and always stop for the red light.

Which is good. Because when you get a ticket for failing to stop at a red light, you can come onto KB and whinge about it......... Unless you're in the car, in which case "Fucking cager"
The fact that, if you're paying attention, you can match your speed to match the phasing of the light signals notwithstanding, of course.

That is the fun part. When they switch the lights on in the afternoon, there is a free-flowing motorway and ZERO traffic on the onramp. Why do they turn the bloody things on then???
The entertainment is hitting 160 at the precise time that the green light flashes.
It's all about timing, skills and not giving a fuck about those stupid bloody lights.:shifty::Punk::scooter::rofl:

Thankfully no ticket for me.
I wasn't travelling all that fast - maybe 20 or 30k past stationary traffic. I think what he didn't like was just the fact that I was to the right of the white line. Also, Initially I was between the two lines of cars that were trying to merge (although stationary when I went through) and appeared "suddenly" from out of the traffic. From where he was standing it probably looked worse than it was.
