I did send a message to SKY telling them thanks for the qualifying coverage. It doesn't hurt to encourage them...

Sometimes qualifying can get really interesting in the closing stages, especially if one of the top riders has an oops and is running out of time to get his hot lap in.
Like Rossi in Phillip Island in 2008. Having crashed on what would have been his hot lap he only barely had time to ride around the track to get to the start and then complete one lap. No communing with the bike through the foot peg, no tugging leather out of his bum, he went out of the pits as if he'd been fired out of a gun. The commentary was covering it and it was real nail biting stuff.

One day it'll be like Formula 1 and we'll see all the practices too... :corn:

Wasn't it Rossi, Pedrosa, Stoner last year? Horhay had an off near the end and Randy the Punyone was fourth (?) and I think Melandri did an ok job too...

Yeah, you're right Pritch. So I got off my arse (well figuratively speaking) and sent them the message below.

But it is great to see the qualifying unfold and that has added a new dimension.

Hey, I am VERY impressed.

There was a time when SKY were hesitating to buy and show motorcycle sport and I was seriously contemplating cancelling my SKY subscription.

Now - we have not only great coverage of races - but there is now the bonus of MotoGP qualifying. It has been soooo good that I have installed MySKY

Thank you.

Not yet, but there is talk of this happening hopefully later in the season. There's quite an investment to make to record/broadcast in HD I believe - but very well worth it for the punters (well those with MySky, which isn't me - yet!)

My... errmm MySky recorded it just fine, might be an issue with your unit. My first MySky was a bucket-o-shite but I had a taste of how good MySky was if they ran properly, fortunately I got it replaced free of charge as they are supposed to do (the previous one was about 3 years old) and the new unit thus far has been reasonably glitch free.

If any young racers ever wonder what racing used to be like, just watch Moto2. Evenly matched engines leaving it all to the rider talent. Production engine racing at its best. G.

That Moto2 is somewhat spectacular. I'd say it's only going to get better (if that's possible!) as the season goes on.

I thought the American with the indecisive name (No-yes) was doing an immense job at the front end, as well as the young Japanese rider.

Yeah Disco, I even picked that, those fucken pom flappers were too busy admiring bradley smith, I counted them flapping 6 times in the first lap about where Smith was. ( He was lucky to finish where he did.) There was another pom kid , Redding I believe. We heard lots about him coming from way back till he jumped off. All the bikes have software to manage the amount of fuel used during the race so that they never run out before the finish line... in theory.

Looking at the top speeds per lap here http://resources.motogp.com/files/results/xx/2010/SPA/MotoGP/RAC/Analysis.pdf?v1_8e3823b6
It seems that Jorge's bike was being conservative at the beginning of the race and then giving him more power towards the end - both he and Rossi posted their highest top speeds on the last lap.

Also, his crew chief said that he prefers the bike when it doesn't have a full tank of fuel.

Some brilliant racing all round. I was impressed by Luthi, he's hardly fired a shot since he won his 125 title.
Never mind the high corner speed and tidy lines of the 125 style, Luthi was sliding that thing into corners like a motard rider. I think perhaps he's been playing in the dirt?

Was especially pleased for Elias. He was really pissed off at being dropped from MotoGP when he had a better record than some who kept their jobs. If he could win the title that'd be a great "up yours".

Some hereabout seem unhappy with the commentators. Interestingly some on the Brit boards I watch don't much like some of the commentaries available to them either.

In Whitham's book "What A Good Do!" there is a photo of him and his co-commentator on the job for Eurosport. They haven't got a 40 or 50 inch screen TV such as we have at home. They are crammed in a booth that's bugger-all bigger than my shit house, there's very little window space, and their two monitors look to have about a 12" screen.

On that basis we should be seeing things they miss.

The visiting athletes at the LA Olympics were frustrated by the American coverage which consisted of an never-ending stream of medal ceremonies with USA winning gold.

The Pacific Islands that take our TV coverage of the Olympics and Commonwealth Games complain about the endless pictures of people in black singlets.

The excessive interest in Bradley Smith then is pretty much situation normal. Their comments about Scott Redding were of interest because they contained a positive mention of Pete Benson his crew chief who is a Kiwi.

I guess we can't lose them all?

The best coverage possible really. Then last year I started watching it here on sky sports which was good but not really the same level of coverage. And this year I decided to front up the euros and pay for the coverage on motogp.com and so far i cant fault it. Full coverage of practice, qualifing and races of all classes. Yeah I know only too well it does mate. Lost a few races because of it myself. BUT...having electronics that are that advanced that they lean your engine out...so you loose power is crap! Mind you...part of that problem is the silly fuel capacity rule. Fuck...carry 30 litres if you have to!

onearmedbandit
26th May 2010, 14:46

That's correct. But now they have systems that cut the fuel usage back when they're getting low...and that's shithouse! Having a bike running out of fuel is actually dangerous...and a bad idea.

onearmedbandit
26th May 2010, 16:03
Isn't the idea though by leaning the bike out it won't run out of fuel? The teams are always going to gamble on how much power they can get out of a set amount of fuel, and may actually use that in their tatics.

Crasherfromwayback
26th May 2010, 16:11
Correct. But who the hell wants to see a race fucked by bike 'a' not having enough and dropping power? Bike 'b' has more left and wins what could've/should've been a hell of a race? I sure as fuck don't want to see such things happening.

onearmedbandit
26th May 2010, 16:17
Oh I agree with you Pete. But who hasn't witnessed a race (be it 4 wheels or 2) where without electronics (other than monitoring systems) the rider/driver has backed off themselves to conserve fuel. Now, because the rules allow for it, they control that automatically.

Bring back the 500's from the late eighties to mid nineties I say. They were the best years of racing*. Angry snarling beasts of bikes with no wheelie control, launch control, traction control. It all came down to 'balls' control.

* - My opinion, I was too young to watch anything earlier pretty much

Crasherfromwayback
26th May 2010, 16:28
Yeah I've been to a few GP's where the 500's were still 'it', and I've gotta say...a better spectacle. Just watched the GP from Phillip Island in 1989 this morning actually...awesome! The 1000's were good...but the 800's are not doing it for me nearly as much. Bring back the sideways action!!!

Funny thing is (well actually...it's hardly surprising I guess), the riders all seem to want to ditch the electronic aids as well! The spectators want to seem them go. So if the Moto GP bosses had any balls they'd leave them to Superbikes and ban them!

discodan
27th May 2010, 13:34
Everyone hates the electronics. The problem is that the manufacturers have the power when it comes to making the rules. Dorna want to make the show better for the fans, while the manufacturers want to develope better technology to sell more bikes.

Infront have more control over the rules in WSBK and the Manufacturers have to make do (except for Ducheati) but MotoGP can't afford to piss off any of the manufacturers or there won't be any bikes on the grid.
