View Full Version : I think I'm now hooked on trout fishing!

First time ever trout fishing. Went with a mate of mine to Lake Brunner. He was a keen fly fisherman, I'd only ever dropped some bait over the side of the Christchurch Pier.

We sorted out a guide, (Brent Beadle from Moana - Awesome fella. I highly recommend him!) who took us to the mouth of a river. He handed me a rod with a spinner (please correct me if I'm wrong) on the end and said "Walk out there next to those branches and cast into that calm spot."
I'm thinking WTF no lessons? Just get out there and do it? No way can't be that easy!?!

So I cast out and begin winding it back in slowly and BANG! fish on the line! 1st cast! I swear he had it rigged but how do you rig that?

First ever Brown trout caught by me weighed in at 7.25lbs! Average for the lake is 4lbs.

We walked up the river after that for 15 minutes where we started fishing a wide stretch of water. My mate Matt fly fishing 20m upstream from me. After about an hour of slowly moving up the river and Matt not getting even a nibble I hooked another one!

2nd ever Brown trout caught by me weighed in at 8.5lbs!

Unfortunately Matt never got a nibble all day. Beginners luck helped me out I think.

Anyway here's some pictures to prove it

Hey - nice work! It's the one that didn't get away.

It's great fun isn't it? No better feeling than pulling in a heavy brown trout in a beautiful spot. I use to fish a lot up at Lake Rotoma. Simply awesome spot, and always went out with all the "boys" fishing. Always made me giggle when I reeled in a lovely trout, at a decent weight too, and they didn't. They use to get so frustrated. Then back to the batch we would go and smoke it over Manuka for tea. That's when they would start to appreciated it.

It can sure be a relaxing way to spend a day too. Great catch and great photographic evidence - without that they would never believe ya! ;)

Nice looking fish. Yes I'm jealous ... much!
I moved to Christchurch from Twizel nearly 8 years ago and haven't touched my fly rod in that time. So sad! I'd love to get back into it but I reckon living in Twizel spoilt me as I could leave home, drive for 10 minutes in any direction and be on good fishing water. Here I'd probably need to drive an hour just to find some thrashed water. Wahhhh! One day...

Maybe people could suggest some good spots for fishing around Mid Canterbury.

Apparently Lake Lyndon(sp) is good.

You don't have to travel all the way to Brunner to pick up fish like that (but I will admit the odds are a bit better).

I've found a couple of primo spots very close to CHCH. If I posted about the size, quantity, and health of the fish in them I would sound like just another bullshitting fisherman... so I won't.

No way am I posting details here after all of the leg work I put in either. You'll have to put on some Polaroids and find these places for yourself, that's half the fun. Suffice to say that most of the best fishing I've found is in water that isn't even featured on some maps. Blink and you miss it kind of stuff.

Nice brown Jack there Gareth.

Shadows, O how right you are.... I've seen big browns in creeks you can jump over.

I got all excited. Thought you were going to give it up - your primo spot that is(That still doesn't sound right!)

Nothing augments the angling experience like a couple of primo spots.

And I have a premo spot....14 in 3 1/2 hours..Not in Canty mind you...further south.

The secret is to find a partly tidal fresh water lake with good rivers flowing in. Go to one of them when the white bait are running and the trout will attack anything that looks remotely alive.

Nice fish you have there well done on first cast....enjoy now that you are hoked.

Flower salt and pepper, fried in Butter...or Smoked...the only ways to eat trout

I quite like the look of a couple of bits of water close to town but I'm not sure about access or water quality so haven't done anything about it. For preference I enjoy creeping around high country tarns and clear water streams. Unfortunately I just don't have time to do the spade work involved in finding the right place

When I was about 10 I caught a 3.2kg brown trout in the Avon River.

I saw a large trout there a couple of years ago just up from 'The Strip'. Would have been at least 7 pound. (Sorry, for fish I still think in imperial weight).

Oh, for those outside Chch, 'The Strip' is the eating/drinking area right in the middle of the city.

Oh God, I agree with Skyryder! I fished for years, caught many nice trout ... and returned probably half of them. One of my most distinct memories though was a fishless morning spent on a treelined stream. Memorable because a fantail kept me company for about 20 minutes and settled on the tip of my flyrod on a few occasions in between flitting about after flies and bugs. Very cool just feeling the weight of this tiny bird on the tip of my rod (yes I know it sounds wrong) so yeah, as Skyryder suggested ... you can still have a great day without catching a fish.

I caught a trout a few years ago and while my mate was performing death on it she spat out about 60 eggs.

I felt that bad about it I haven't been fishing since.

You're just not one of them.

60 eggs? Don't feel bad. Odds are that none of the 60 would have survived to be two year old fish anyway.

Was sitting on my jetty having a beer after work yesterday evening and this decent size trout went gliding pass in about 2 foot of water. Have seen plenty of carp (which you are not allowed to catch) and perch in the canal but this was my first trout. Seen plenty of trout rising around the edges of the lake itself when going for walks. Said to my better half when we were watching the trout that I am going to buy a decent trout rod this week and get into a bit of fishing since it is on our doorstep. On another note the river that you cross on S.H.1 just south of Temuka (Opihi river I think) looks like a great fishing river. Will give it a go one day soon

Well done, those are some big Trout!

My 7 year old son is getting into his fishing - loves dropping a rod off the wharf over at Diamond Harbour - we are pulling up some weird stuff - little fish we throw back, a half metre shark, starfish, crabs and a old fishing rod!

Been out to the Groynes fishing lakes but no luck and had fun down in Wanaka over Easter.

His casting arm is coming on well!

Must try some of the Canterbury lakes.

My brother-in-law lives a few minutes from the river about 7 km upstream from SH1. We've been down there a few times giving his dog a run and there are some inviting pools and runs in it. Have seen fish rising in the evening but I no idea of size.

Did not end up buying a trout rod but found one of the kids old rod/reel sets and gave it a clean up and oil & grease. Found an old lure that use to belong to a long dead great uncle of mine, last used about 50years ago! Tied it on and walked 10 metres to my jetty and, bugger me,,,,, look what I caught!!! He put up a great fight jumping well clear of the water a few times before I landed him. Since he was the first I let him go. Bigger ones out there for eating I am sure.
