I'd be shaking too.
You don't let deals like that pass by.

Ive told people to fuck off for the same behaviour, so yeah, cudda backfired if the vendor took exception.
Theres also such a thing as fair, but judging by your thoughts you arent familiar with that.

I'd wager he did know what they were worth, and the 4k was more of a token price than an ignorant one. If I was that loaded (he owns Gulf Oil) and I saw an oportunity to get rid of some 'junk' and make someones day then why not. But if he tried to take me for a sucker it would've soured the whole experience.
WHAT - THE - F !!!!!
someone won the lottery...
shit, 4000 dollars for both... i couldn't stand with the poker face, i'd had a smile eating both my ears... :D :D :D :D
why offer 3500? obvious! because stated that the other guy had no idea of how much those bikes would be valued, you have to fix the idea that his price was the right one, or better a bit too high.
he: "no less than 4000$!"
you, try not to jump to high: "weeell... 4000$... yea, but they're all dirty, i'll probably have to disassemble all the engine after 6 years of stop, then i don't know how you used them and serviced.... i can offer 3500..."
he, thinking at the space they took in the garage, with the will to give them away but not loosing too much money: "mmh... no, 4000$ is really the minimum"
you, with the sad face: "all right all right... 4000$ but just because i like you!"
then stop at the first bar to cheer on you.... ;)

I think people are missing the point here. But no sense in trying to explain 'decency'.

Maybe just maybe the owner did know the value, but seeing as he has shitloads of dosh, decided to sell for a token value to a true enthusiest, however the sale could've gone pear shape at the counter offer.
