Single exhaust conversion on a V-twin?

As per title, I am looking to convert my SV1000 S from the factory dual exhaust setup into one single can coming out of the side..

I was just wondering if anyone has done this before? How does it alter the power/torque curve and do you require tuning after this?

I have been looking on overseas forums to see a lot of people doing underseat exhaust conversions on theirs but have not been able to read about if they require tuning/power commander or not...

I know its gonna sound good and decrease the weight of the bike by a fair bit..

Yes thats right but it comes out from factory like that, so will be tuned accordingly but my query is that if i do it, will the bike run fine? will it have higher power/torque than before? i have figured out how to do it already, also getting rid of the cat converter while at it..

In theory, if it was plumbed right, there could be some exhaust scavenging effect if the pulses from each cylinder follow one another nicely. In practice, I dunno... could be a real Can'o'Wormz. I'd imagine that unless you have access to better facilities than Suzuki used, you're more likely to make performance worse, even allowing for some de-restricting of flow.

M4 made a nice single set up for a TL1000,sadly i missed out on one awhile back but am still pursuing the single sided thing.Cant imagine you will gain any HP whatsoever and i guess chances are you may even lose out though somewhere through the rev range though that wont put me off personally.Be interesting to see the results after a dyno i guess though ive got an old Yosh box to have a play with when i get mine sorted.Keep us posted on what you come up with,Pm Imdying as he has a very tasty SV with plumbing work and will no doubt answer your questions.

Hmmmm, I used to have a 06 ZX10r with a full two brothers exhaust and a single can although the bike came out with two cans from factory, and the power curve on that bike was dope! I do understand these are two different kind of bikes but still.... Can anyone shed some light explaining what could possibly go wrong if I go this way?? Need to decide by this weekend...

Unless I am mistaken you already have a 2 into 1 into 2 system, or at the very least a short crossover. Are you looking at a complete system or just the last half?
Check your muffler temps probably find one is colder than the other which probably means most of the flow is out of one anyway.
Dont over analyse it before doing it, otherwise you will think yourself out of it. Try it, could be the best thing since sliced bread.
A before and after squirt on the dyno would be handy.
If it needs tuning Yosh box or Teka SFI would be much more cost effective than lashing out on a PC.

I put a 2 into 1 on a TDM, ok, it's a parallel twin but fires like a v-twin & carburated not injected. Saved a huge amount of weight, sound's great & fattened out the mid-range. Bike feels crisper off the throttle but that could just be the noise. A mate just put a two brothers pipe onto his fireblade (05), a different kettle of fish I know, but the bike feels & sounds much better & no tuning done at all. The last time I heard of problems with an exhaust it was a micron system fitted to a two stroke, a long time ago. Brownie points if anybody can guess the bike, they were ridiculously popular, wheelied like mad & spawned a whole economy of tuning & handling parts.

I have had the same idea with my Firestorm, I'd like to ditch the 2 big cans, ideally I'd like to have a small pipe exiting from just under the swingarm. Otherwise I thought of just blanking off where the 2nd(left from rear) pipe junction and running an afetrmarket can on the side.
I like the idea of weight saving, more sound, and looking better.
Don't like wrecking the power delivery.

The main thing with a v-twin going two into one is making sure that the pipes are the same length or at least have equivalent flow. I think on most Ducati exhuasts the headers are different ID to compensate for the difference in length.

There are two choices, the Yoshi 2 into 1, or modifying the existing system with some bends, there's an excellent write up on the SVPortal about it. I have a spare system hanging on my wall that I'll never use, you could modify that one instead of doing your own? Don't bend up pipes, just make it out of stainless mandrel bends, the write up is very good. If you can't find it, post here and I will and link it for you.

What I am planning to do is to connect pipes just where the extractors end using stainless steel piping, and then joining into a y-joint under the rear suspension area, which then connects to a 2" pipe going to the can. If it works as i have planned, I can revert to the stock system if this isnt successful.. Would like it to be done asap but the only person who can do it that i have found is Warren from Virgin Mufflers, and cant do it until mid-next week... Anyone know anyone else in Auckland??

make it out of stainless mandrel bendsYeah this is fun and easy. It's very satisfying making stuff with the file and hacksaw.. Well, cough, maybe angle grinder and belt sander lol. A little gasless MIG and box of mild steel bends is a cheap alternative. :niceone:
