So how do you people toughen up for winter riding conditions, extra/different gear, heated grips, take the cage :shit:

Thermals, put the perforated leathers away until things warm up,swap the winter gloves for summer ones, neck warmer and all is good.

Layers. Liners into gear, winter gloves. Merino tops and leggings (though I wear leggings all year round) More layers. I love winter riding. You really appreciate your gear, it feels lovely and heavy. A bit like snuggling down under a feather duvet, with the lecky blankie on the bed in winter mmmmmmmmmmmm.

Dri rider 3 seasons jacket with thermal lining in. Winter gloves. Neck warmer. Same as summer for waist down (work pants, long socks and shoes) except wil put on waterproof track pants over the top on rainy days.

But my new addition to this winter / used half of last winter... heated grips. Would never put them on a bike myself but my k7 came with them on and fuck they are awesome

Turn on the heated handgrips and pop on the balaclava. That's the only difference for me apart fropm having to throw the waterproof gear on over the top a little more often.

EDIT: Oh yeah ... and zip up the vents in the jacket.

Heated grips, heated jacket, polypro layers, thick polypro balaclava, multilayer pants, and I can ride wherever I want, whenever I want. Sticky Michelin tyres, and winter is irrelevant. :ride:

Well worth the money, not expensive.

Heated grips come on; 2 thermal tops plus leggings under leathers; Kathmandu wet weather jacket and overpants fit perfectly over my leathers and keep me dry (plus great for another wind break layer). Only thing that is a pita is wet gloves when it pissists down. Otherwise, snug as a bug. I won't be riding in pouring rain wearing my cordura anymore (even though it's toasty warm) since turning up at Pussy's place looking like a muddy drowned rat.

Same gear i ride with in summer with the addition of thermal liners which i better put in tonight. Might invest in something to keep my neck and head warm as well.

yep. Same as all of the above. Thermal layers under the wet weather gear with the addition of goggles, I find the visor fogs up in the rain so, its just easier to wear clear wrap around goggles. And some decent winter gloves. Nothing worse than frost bitten fingers and you can't even feel your levers anymore.

No, I go out and ride my cruiser in shorts, t-shirt and no gloves.

Warmer gloves. That's about it really, except for thermals if I'm in jeans.

much the same as usual, apart from thermals and for long distance wet trips bread bags and large rubber bands.

Liners into jacket and pants, winter gloves. Not much else needed, really, just a spare pair of gloves on longer trips.

I wear thermals, and glove liners, though with the new heated handgrips, I doubt I will need them? I also have a fleecy neck thing that sits under your jacket collar, against the skin and stops the drafts. I tried a balaclava but found it too weird and uncomfortable.

Not at all, I prefer to call myself a pass the parcel pressy, many layered with a lovely surprise when all the wrapping is off :D

2-piece is much easier to live with. Just as waterproof.

I just add a layer of thermals under everything, and balaclava inside the helmet.

also, how do you stop rain from sticking to visor in big drops which severely impair vision? At low speed in town riding that is.

Liners back in to pants and jacket, winter gloves, neck gaiter and install heated grips... having said that apparantly we are in for a not-so-cold winter if NIWA etc are to be believed.

Use lots of catcrap antifog and keep the visor shut... but yes, this is a problem.

Agreed. I rode in 3 degrees in the South Island in March and slipped one of those on. Warm as toast but yea a bit difficult to get off when wet.

Same as summer except I exchange my cold-suit under layer for thermals and wear a thermal face/neck mask. On long journeys I'll take my wet weather overpants and jacket for keeping the rain out and the sharp chill off (especially late at night). I use the same glove that I do in summer (Alpinestar GP pro) as I don't seem to notice the cold in my hand. With my nervous system injury for me it's all about maintaining the same temp, whether cold or hot. Temp fluctuations are what fuck me.

Just a change of gloves for me... you have such beautiful winter riding weather in this part of the country... the rain just changes angle...

also, how do you stop rain from sticking to visor in big drops which severely impair vision? At low speed in town riding that is.In town I just open it. The problem is between 70 and 90k, where the risk of eye damage is too great to ignore, and the wind speed is not high enough to clear the visor.

rainx is the shiz. I find the rain rolls off at 40-50km. I wear glasses so really cant ride with visor open in rain or even just after, which is worse I find as more road crap flying around. The thing that suz is fogging up visor then glasses & then after taking glasses off to find am riding in fog. nice

yeh, then my glasses just get covered in same, which don't go away when you get to speed or close visor! I usually use my index finger like a wiper blade to rid them, hmmm, perhaps getting some cheap waterproof gloves and sewing a length of windscreen wiper to the hand part is an idea....

Two pairs of merino thermals instead of one. And thicker gloves. And maybe turn on the heated grips if frosty. Rain gear is always in the seatbag anyway. That's about it.

Liner back in the jacket, dont forget the wet weathers, rubbish bag inside the backpack, spare gloves for the trip home, be more aware of cagers who dont know stopping distances change in the wet / ice

dririder with waterproof lining (came in handy last night), got soaked.
thermal underwear to keep the important bits functioning, and i wear my uniform underneath to work. gloves normal no winter gauntlets yet.
pinlock shoei with antifog lens (is kick ass). no heated grips, just go faster, and hug bike.
boots $15 on tm, sidi's.
fogging has been my biggest problem to date, coz we got thick atmospheric fog here, as well as the cold condensing on my visor.

I've had heated grips - on two bikes, not really that impressed with them . Gotta have the thermals though..... but might have to try to make extra room in the ole leathers first though

I commute 5-6 days per week in all weather. I use all my summer gear but add a 2 piece suit.
I also have a 1 piece if I'm going long distance in the pissing down rain
