Hullo,

Alright, alright, I know it's a cage...
I'm off to look at a '96 Toyota Carib Touring Z tomorrow. 4wd 7af-e Auto.
Does anyone on here know of any typical problems I should be on the lookout for?

Cheers...

Its a Toyota, bloody reliable. Watch for clunky shift from auto and rust under the tailgate lip. If it doesn't drive smoothly walk away. 4wd chews tires if wheel allignment is off. Anymore details?

Do you need 4wd? IMHO, a 2wd corolla is a better idea

Rust under the tailgate lip. Ah-ha. That's the sort of info I'm after. Cheers.

Sweet as, what price and mileage is it?

Watch out for a badly serviced auto box too. If it clunks or sticks walk away!

165000km, should be able to get it for a little above 4k. Has had regular servicing and receipts to prove it.

Steering should veer gently left when you take your hands off the wheel and it should change gear smoothly. Check the receipts that anti freeze has been used in the radiator. The 4wd system can stress the steering parts if its been driven lots with bad wheel alignment. Can be a bit dear to fix.

I've had a 4wd Carib wagon and it was a good car. Ran it up to near 300 thou, then sold it. I was the culprit who drove it lots with bad wheel alignment and had to replace the front shocks, steering bushes and tie rod ends because of it.

Nope. I think the owner might be on KB hence I don't want to discuss particulars. What about a green one in Khandallah? Any good?

Mother-in-Law is selling hers at the moment. Same year. Not sure what price she's after though, but it's well looked after. Thought I may have had the inside scoop.

It'd be appreciated if you could find out. I don't think it's on Tardme.

Negative. The car seems to have driveline issues(most likely centre diff). Which fucks me off no end. Me and the missus are completely hamstrung by lack of transport. Things at home are getting complicated, if you know what I mean.
As for the car, when you come off the throttle and on again, there is a half second to a second pause and then a thud and a barely perceptible jolt, all coming from the rear of the car. So as I said, prolly driveline. FUCK....Frustrated

Rear universal! Bugger! Toyota is the right make but if you need something reliable then buy a good basic one. We've had pretty much every model of corolla going and never had any major issues. The best bang for buck we had was a 93 liftback, a good tidy one of those would be around the right money. Try and get a 5 speed, they tend to last better.

You sure it's the rear u-joint? What's that cost to fix? Also has to be an auto, as the missus can't drive a manual (don't even go there.)

Steer clear of 4X4 models, you don't NEED four-wheel-drive and it's just another thing to go wrong.

And generally it costs more to run fuel-wise.

Dead set sure, its the rear drive shaft catching up with its slack inside the universal and its not cheap! And Scumdog is right. Leave the 4wd ones alone if you want longevity. I only had one cause we were living in Ohakune at the time and I needed a car that could be used all year.

4 cylinder autos are a bad combination, especially the older ones.

Oh aye. The trouble is I know I'm in the right price range for what I want, but there don't seem to be many cars of the sort I need up for sale.
