Its coming around again.
Well worth the trip, 2 races Saturday, 3 races Sunday.
Track is huge and gets really rough, lots of 5th gear pinned straights and sweeping corners, races are usually 4-5 laps.
Gear you bike up for top speed and get into it.
This gets bigger every year, think there was close to 400 riders last year, very well run event with classes from novice to MX1.
Heres a vid of one of the quad races, the start straight was 450m long last year!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0GY8JQF_ng&feature=related
And yep its usually bloody freezing, raced in the snow in 2008.
So who's keen????????
Will post up entry form when it comes out.

don;t think they do, the track gets mighty rough in the corners with all the modern bikes so it might not be that much fun

Bad buzz. Pity I sold my RMZ4 fiddy to pay for the vintage bikes! Maybe next year!

Didn't see a VMX specific class last year, I did see a few KX and CR 500's ripping around there though, its right up their alley.
Have to wait and see the entry form to see all the classes this year.
As Scott said it does get mighty rough so may not be all that enjoyable on the older bikes.
Bloody good fun on the 450 though, you haven't seen roost until you have raced here, 40man start gate, shits flying!

I can imagine! Still...years ago when beach racing was in full swing, following another 500 two stroke down the beach at 100mph wasn't much fun. The wet sand roost at that speed was like shotgun pellets!

This is just good old pumice/volcanic top soil with the occasional turnip thrown in!
I wouldn't know what our top speeds are but I was bouncing of the limiter in 5th at the end of the start straight.
Got a 14 for the front this year and looking at a maybe a 46 for the back for some extra legs.

you can go to a 38 on modern hondas before you need to grind the hub :)

Shit you would be hauling the mail then!! Do you know what the 450 guys run on the sand? I would think this would be very similar.

5th May 2010, 14:29
i dont actually know of anyone that rides a crf 450 on the beach. I know some of the cr500 riders use a 36t rear with a 14t front but the rear hub needs to ground down a little on the outside of the sprocket holes so that the chain will clear it. I can also confirm that a cr 250 with 14-38 gearing is still too low geared to be a front runner. The power is there. She just runs out of revs

Dunno...but for road racing at Wangaui, I was running 15/36 on my RMZ. My KX500 for beach racing was 16/36...good for about 180kph on asphalt, but with wheelspin on the beach around 100mph.

so now that the thread is hi-jacked... who's keen for some beach racing??
theres also a 250 4t class run seperate on a short track, which so far has only been won on bikes with standard gearing - making it an easy sport to get into

True, i got the 2010 dates of the MNZ website, will try and get hold of the club to confirm actual date.
It was the weekend before last year.

7th May 2010, 13:03
Scott was right, just spoke to the club, MNZ wanted them to have it on the 10-11th and allocated it that way, thats why its lists those dates on their site, Taumaranui MCC know all about the T100 and the clash so they have applied for the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of July, same weekend they have it every year. They are waiting on confirmation from MNZ, as soon as they have it entry forms will be posted.
So I guess we will see heaps of you there now!!

What sort of gearing do the 450 use? Ive heard that you need to gear the bike up, but how much by?
scott411
2nd June 2010, 21:03
a 450 will be pretty good standard, they are pretty fast as they are,
smaller bikes ill need bigger gearing tho

We put a 14 on the front after the first race last year, the start straight was huge and it definitely helped get you there up the front, if you want a good result you need to be up there at the start otherwise its roost city. i'm definitely running one this year and debating a smaller rear as well.

Depending on class field size (limited to 40) and transponder availability i'd say yes.
It would pay to call Murray, I don't have a copy but his number was on the TT ad in the DRD mag. He's the man to talk to.
What class you thinking of unleashing the beast in?

What a fun weekend, awesome track and the rain stayed away.
Not as many people there this year but still some awesome racing.
Track got real rough Saturday arvo but was great on Sunday, arm pump and a stall kept me out of the top 10 overall in Int250 but managed to get a 7th in one race and some other good results. (well for me any way)
Ended up 13th overall in int 250 and 9th in the vets.
Brad Groombridge was the man to beat all day in MX 1-2 and Luke temple in the Int class (he didn't have a licence or something?)
Was that you on the 900 ktm Sunday Casual??
And Danger if you read this the suspension was great!!

Was that you on the 900 KTM, Sunday Casual??
Yeah, that was me on the KTM (#900) in MX2.
Had an up and down weekend really, had 3 good races and 2 shocking ones. Because the races were so short, any mistake was going to cost you. A little mistake in two races saw me drop from 11th to 28th in about 30 seconds flat. I guess that there will always be aspects to work on next year!
In the races I kept it together I was 11th, 13th and 13th, so it was promising. Next year I guess! 17th overall, a bit unhappy about it but that's racing; consistency is key. Glad to be in one piece today. There were a few serious accidents and a few ambulances were seen... I wish a speedy recovery to those hurt.

Yeah i agree you have to be consistent and keep the bike the right way up with the short races, i went from 5th to dead last 23rd after my stall, had fun trying to get back, made it up to 16th so i was pretty stoked.
Talked to the farmer afterwards, heaps of collarbones, a couple of wrists and a neck injury, it was fast so that is to be expected i guess, hope they all get better soon.
A guy next to me on the start jumped early and got hooked on the gate, flung himself and his bike in a massive endo, fucked his new helmet and tweaked his neck, bloody impressive to watch but i bet it didn't feel so good.
Roll on next year!
