View Full Version : Pricey tyres
Just a heads up to all, the last 2 times i have rung Cycletreads (5-6000 km apart, weekend rider) they have given me such ridiculous quotes on tyres that they have subsequently lost not only the tyre sale but also the $500 accessory sale that i was looking to make
approx 6000 km ago i needed a 190/50/17 diablo, also needed visor & gloves, rung CT, $420 quoted for said tyre!!!:shifty: i said find a sharper pencil, they said ok $400. i almost went for it but decided to make 1 further call, haldanes... $349 without me mentioning any previous quote and they got the visor sale too.
ok so last week th ol TLR needed the full set, rear + 120/70/17 ft. CYCLETREADS, they still got that false ad in the new yello pages, quoted $700, I pissed myself laughing & promptly hung up:gob:
Haldanes, again cold call ie no mention of previous quotes, $549, not bad, bugger they didn't have the rear in stock:bye:
so last call of the day went to DRURY PERFORMANCE CENTRE 09 294 7955. again cold call, $500 :done: needless to say that included fitting, balancing & disposal.
give them a go, hopefuly they wont get fat heads and deep pockets like the rip offs in Barrys Point Rd
BTW while i only have 8 posts on here ive been on 2 wheels for 22 years, cycletreads wern't always rip offs. i just prefer to ride more than talking about it
Yep. nice guys at DPC, sharp prices too :D under $500 for a pair of alpha10's

Anthony the owner of DPC is a biker too, he has probably the best service and pricing around. If I was closer to Auckland I would be going there for everything. Needless to mention that DPC sells more tyres than anywhere else, and your bucks go to an awesome NZ family buisness that is generations old.

Just out of curiosity, what tyres did you get? (i'm looking for a replacement, my bike came with two quality yet mis-matched tyres so waiting for the right deal for either front or rear!)

How do you find them? I've got a Z6 front and Michelin PR2 rear. Am either going to replace one or the other or get a different set altogether.....(i'm not a michelin fan and not sure about the Z6's....)

FF, i really like the Z6's, had near bald ones on the R1 when i got it ,still handled bloody well.
made a big difference to the Buell as it had a shinko front and a fairly squared off PR2 on the back,
the hard thing is i loved the Contis and now the Z6's, really rate the PR2 and PP's i put on the R1.......
I think the big thing is just havin new hoops and them being round not squared off.
oh and the Z6's are very very similar to the Diablo stradas, which i had on the front of the hornet(near bald) before the contis..another good tyre..
Coming into the winter i want good grippy allweather tyres.....

I would say get rid of the PR2.
Z6's are a great touring tyre, and even the cops use them on the Beemers....
Another reason is, the front will out last the rear 2 to 1, so even if you do buy a new front to match the rear, you will be replacing the rear soon in any case....
If you are doing more spritly riding, have a look at the M3 Sportec's. Very happy with mine... although, there isn't too much in the way of rain groves.... Could be an issue if I do lots of winter riding.

nothing wrong with the PR2, plenty like them, but Tyres are very personal. My pirelli scorpion syncs have never been under $650 a set, from several places. Meh
a sweet set of diablo's had a great run outta the last set cheers

There are quite a few people on here who praise cycletreads but i saved $100 ringing around the dealers. Cycletreads appear to be a bit over rated. The only bonus for them is they have an online store.
I would HIGHLY recommend Drury Performance to anyone. A good old fashioned tyre shop. Knowledgeable and helpful. The prices being so sharp is the cherry on top.

Always good to know of a place that doesn't charge the earth and knows what customer service is all about. I don't need new tyres just yet but have bookmarked their site for when I do.

Meh, when I was living in Auckland, I got a quote from both DPC and Cycletreads for a set of Pilot Road 2's.
Cycletreads were $50 cheaper. And closer.

Went in to my usual place on fri for new set of tyres in chch . rung first, yes set in stock , as usual asked for name to tag and hold them for day. Stripped rims off bike and dropped them off, told 1 hour , Went for a walk and look in shops, came back after 45min , they were just finishing last tyre. balanced and set to pressure I asked. brought a tyre repair kit, they gave me a few spare free gas cylinders , cause they said a 190/50 takes a bit of air to fill and only 3 cylinders in kit.
At this stage hadn't asked for price, 2nd time I've done this.
As usual price was pretty sharp ( I know current prices from other bikers and last purchase)
and I walked out happy. Thats why I keep going back, its a no brainer.

Out of curiosity and being a tard, why do tyre stores not carry or fit bike tyres?
Out of curiosity and being a tard, why do tyre stores not carry or fit bike tyres?
I asked my brother (tyre store owner) that very question.
Answer: "I have enough money tied up in the stock I have to carry for cars. Plus, there are bike shops in town and I have no desire to piss them off."

I asked that very question of one of the few independently run cage tyre stores. Owner said in no uncertain terms he was to F off by the manufacturers - that the bike shops had sewn up the retailing from the tyre makers and would ditch the manufacturers brand from the lineup if said manufacturer sold via normal cage chain.
I can't reveal my sources because I've forgotten them.

Bridgestone mc tyres come from a different importer then car or truck . We did have to buy quite a lot of mc tyres to get accounts and also helped because I am me .

It is the same importer for all Bridgestone product, the difference is Bridgestone have a supply agreement with a wholesaler and indent order it for them rather than doing it through their own warehouse like they used to back in the good old days
edit: actually I will have to check that, the way it is done may well have changed when Eurotred took it over

Don't see why he would have to when we deal with several places that will wholesale to us

So...................... ......I e-mailed DPC, Haldanes, Hamilton Honda and a local (to me) Honda Dealer for pricing on the same set of Avon Storm Ultra 2's.
Prices were (in order, all "fitted") $520 (KB Special) - $699- $620 - $710 (On special, going quick they said)
I'd expect some variation for sure, especially with freight involved etc, but $190 extra from a Dealer who, as stated above, told me "These are on special and going quick"......
So I've flicked DPC my cash and they will order and hold them for me for August. E-mail response was tops too. Cheers Mouldy!

Amazing the difference in costs for tyres, one quote was $720 plus fitting, another $588 plus fitting.Had a verbal quote in store for front $269(fitted $320 drop bike off)or $600 fitted(wheels removed)set, but seemed to be differing view on final fitted price, was very close to my work so could've dropped off bike for them.Ended up getting set fitted for $660 bike in bike out.

There was likely a difference in buy price and a difference in margin. I would reasonably guess that in the case of the cheapest quote the margin was incredibly thin to the point of it being very marginal that any money is made after operating costs and in fact all costs are factored in.
Increasingly slender margins are a painfual reality in the motorcycle industry. I was looking at a dealer price list today for one of the leading brands, $460 margin in a 100cc farmbike, and thats before the bike is uncrated, assembled, filled with fluids and pre-delivered. End margin therefore almost nil. Doubtless the customers try to screw the dealers further for a better price thinking that there are Briscoes style margins.
No wonder a lot of motorcycle dealers are going to the wall or are about to.

Little margins maybe, but if quick stock turn around can mean an even better price from wholesaler/supplier due to bulk buying you can make money. The key is not having slow moving stock taking up valuable space,or cash flow, wicked roundabout granted.
As stated by most, the price per set isn't the main thing it's the fitted price to me which counts,no point buying tyres maybe $120 cheaper if the install cost is way high.Sure may cost $600 at company a,and $675 at company b,but if company a charges $80 fitting and company b charges $20 the end result isn't that great.
When I was doing carpet measure and quoting the amount of times my carpet price per meter was say $35 dearer, but the final quote installed, underlay, doorbars and incidentals more than matched competitors was amazing, after all it's the finished cost to customer that counts, and yep margins weren't too flash.

People used to say the same thing about Circustreads and look where that is now . Also The Warehouse and that didn't fall over either . Its just about knowing your shit and doing it good . Price gets them in the first time , customer service brings them back .
