This is from home in Bishkek....when working from the minesite we need to wait for the donkeys to carry the bytes down the pass to the lake where they are transcribed onto papyrus, burried in a peat bog for 6 months dug up and sent as a semaphore flag message accross the lake...to the telegraph post where is is converted to morse for the 300km cable journey to bishkek....where it finally goes digital.....

Thats why I only really spend time on KB when at home.

You'll need to shift closer to a cabinet ... or wait until your area has been cabnitised. The contractor that does this is Chorus. Somewhere on their site is a list of who has been done, and who is left to be done.

The cabinet shortens the length of wire between you and the DSLAM. Shorter wire = faster speed.

I better swap my 5 meter RJ45 cable to a 1 meter one then! 5 times shorter means 5 times the speed right?

I have heard that if you get a constant 7mbps you need get them to turn interleaving off to get full speed.

Someone was pulling your leg there. Interleaving is basically just an error correction measure that particularly improves connection stability at the margin (at the cost of ping time). It's worth having it turned off if you're on a decent quality line and care about ping (i.e. you're a video gamer).

You appear to be in a cusp, but I think there is a good chance you should be getting better speeds than you are, and I see a number of cabinet upgrades are due around December this year in your area.

I am wondering if you have a cable or device fault. Try this for me. Unplug everything else that is plugged into your phone line (every phone, sky decoder if you have one, fax, home alarm, etc).
Turn your ADSL router off and back on again, and then see if the transfer speed is better. If it is, then you have a faulty device plugged into the phone line, and you'll have to test plugging them in one at a time.

If you have a good quality line (as in low number of errors), turning off inter-leaving definately improves your throughput.

Interesting. The thread references a specific firmware bug, which is one thing, but I was unaware interleaving restricted transfer speed in general...

Transfer speed is often affected by latency. Lower your latency and transfer speed improves. Less time spent waiting for TCP acknlowedgements.

You can tune a TCP stack around it, but up until Windows 7 the default Microsoft settings were not very good for high latency circuits (such as interleaved asymetric ADSL).

Unless you're really at the end of your signal, wireless shouldn't be affecting your online speed tests. Wireless bandwidth should be greatly in excess of the average NZ internet connection.

Nope full bars. Everthing i've ever read and been told has stated that wireless is much slower than direct connection........plus I have a basic as modem/router. (Belkin "G"). Obviously i'm no computer expert but I use it enough to get by ok.......

Just re-read what you've written, are you referring to wireless as in a wireless go anywhere internet, or wireless from my modem? (you know what I mean)

Referring to wireless from your router/modem. If you're running a G network, that's 54 mbps peak theoretical bandwidth (you won't actually achieve this in the real world, but still). Wired ethernet tends to come in 100 mbps or 1 gbps. So yes, wireless is slower than wired, which you'll notice if you're shifting large files across a home network. On the other hand, your connection has a peak theoretical speed of 24 mbps (on ADSL2+). You almost definitely won't achieve this in the real world.

So if you're getting a good signal from your router, your online speed tests should be returning the same results whether on your laptop or a PC connected straight to the router.

Think of it this way: your internet connection is a Hyosung 250, wireless is an empty motorway, and wired is an empty autobahn. One might have more room, but neither will limit the Hyosung

you need to look at upload speeds, not download speeds, for sending a vid to youtube, or your ping (how far you are from the next hop).

Down: 9.36MB/s
Up: 9.22MB/s
Ping: 2ms

hi I test the speed of my internet in many sites I got the best and accurate speed results from this site scanmyspeed (http://www.scanmyspeed.com/)
my results are
download=1.04kbps

I dont know the reason why my speed seems to be slow many of them said that if Cable Internet services share bandwidth with satellite Internet access.
If there are many subscribers using that same bandwidth, it can slow down the connection.
kindly guide me how to solve this problem
