View Full Version : Biker Down. Oh shit, it's me...
Fatt Max
10th May 2010, 22:18
Yep, would you adam n eve it.....
Minding me own business, 8.30am on my way to work. Turning right into The Strand heading towards Parnell Rise. See a queue of cars waiting to turn right into Gladstone Rd and as I get close........fucking BOOM......chick in blue cage goes to turn right across me. Bike goes down under the car, I go flying over the boot and smack down on the other side.
Fucking ooooouuuccchhhh.........left leg fucked, right shoulder fucked, right knee burggered and LH ring finger dislocated with fragments of bone floating around in my fucking hand.
I'm effing and blinding at the stupid twat who has nearly killed me to save 5 minutes off their precious work journey and I can hear her saying "i'm so sorry. Im so Sorry".
Anyway, really nice people talking to me now as I am lying on the road, my head not hurt and back feels ok, just the rest of me in a state.
Ambos turn up, fucking legends, the main guy is a biker, great geezer, laughter all the way to Auckland Hopital.
So, in A&E with tubes, probes and stringes sticking out of me and the girls go to work on a fat bloke. Confirm that i have no major breaks, just bashed up. The left hand is fucked though.
Cops in next, take my statement, I'm in Disneyland with the drugs and the pain but they tell me my story stacks up with the other statements, clearly not my fault as I was not speeding (40kms tops, just out of a bend at the lights), fully visible and in the correct road location for optimum view for myself and other drivers.....apart from one.....
Then, nursey has a look at my ring finger, 3 x rays later and it has been ripped away tearing tendons and leaving fractured bone behind. They refer me out to Middlemore so Mrs Max takes me along and I settle in for a long wait......but I'm walking and talking (just)
6 hours in Middlemore, finger reset and in a steel splint with the promise of surgery either Tuesday or Wednesday, but at least I get to go home and can write this.......14 hours after the event.
My bike, well, thats in the towies and I shall be sorting that out with insurance etc tomorrow. The cops say my front forks are rooted but the rest is superficial, all insured so thats ok. They had to cut my bike jacket off and I need a new lid but fuck me they saved me.
Moving forward, no bike or guitar for 6 weeks at least as left hand out of action, but I reckon I'm lucky.
Thanks to the nurses, docs, ambos and orderly’s at Auckland & Middlemore. You are fucking legends. Thanks to those great everyday peeps who stopped to look after me while I was lying in the road. Thanks to Mom and Maha for spotting via text that I can bounce.
And to you, the blind fucking cager on The Strand at 8.30am this morning........you can guess what I shall be dedicating to you tomorrow morning before it heads off to the treatment plant…..

Your head obviously still works fine. (With or without the pain killers).
Not just the good words 'n' stuff, but your attitude... it doesn't sound like anything under your control is going to stop your recovery.
Best wishes. (Which I mean with more sincerity than every time a "sad you are leaving" card goes around the office.)

"We can rebuild him..." If your left hand doesn't come right enough...(sorry had to say that...) you should claim ACC for lost income being a muso and all...
Glad to see your sense of humour wasn't broken in the accident. Shows how we can only do everything in our control but can't do much about the other dopes and with the best of intentions we can still get clobbered! Another example of wearing the right gear is the best option, eh?

Sad news Max but I see you kept your sense of humour well protected!
Heal up and get back on your bike as soon as. Cheers, John.
Well I think perhaps in light of further details I should have said you have wings :blip: You poor bugger, hopefully the happy juice will continue to be provided so you are not feeling too much pain. Make sure you are well stocked up eh, you are going to be one sore boy by the end of today. ACC used to pay for gear damaged in an accident but that stopped long ago. Contents insurance is the go there. Glad you bounced away mate. Bikes and gear are easily replaced, Fatt Maxs aren't.
You take care now.

Quick update.....
First off, well, just so overwhelmed by the posts, pm's, texts, emails and phone calls I have received over the last 24 hours. Thanks to each and everyone of you for your kind and downright funny words.....Flatt Max, a classic......Splatt Max, even better.......and as for Ronin's message to the DHB, classic.......
I will get around to thanking you all personally once my single handed typing speed improves from 20 words an hour.
So, out of hospital now, the surgery on my left hand is on hold for another week meaning I have fecking RoboCops Gun arm on the end of me flabby beer tit. Mrs Max has already surfed the net to see if there are any mail order attachments available, will have to see how that one goes.
State Insurance......brilliant, no fuss and no worry. Arranged collection of bike from Salvage yard and transport to Colemans for assesment. I did have my lunch under the seat of the bike (a fucking HUGE bucket of Sunday's spaggy bol) which I donated to the salvage firm office girls. If they dont answer the phones tomorrow then you know it was a tad 'over- defrosted' so to speak.
As for ASB Insurance......wankers.......lid is fine, umming about me ripped pants and munted boots but will not accept my $600 bike jacket as protective clothing, it's down as normal clothing. Now, that jacket saved my elbows, shoulders, back, in fact all the areas it is designed to save but the ampbs had to cut it off.....fair enough but come on ASB, surley its protective and not normal clothing. Means it gets depreciated in value, may as well have worn a hoodie (no, forget that statement)....anyone have any thoughts on this?
So, at home bashed, battered and bruised.........and thats just the dog.......nah, feel pretty well wrecked but am on the mend, getting easier thanks to all the KB'rs out there and their friendly words.
Oh, of course I was asked the 'are you going to get back on the bike again' to which my answer is a resounding "Fuck yes, and if you dont like it, then......etc etc"
Thanks again you sexy bastards

That's BS, (although lucky they didn't class it as sporting goods cos there'd be more depriciation there probably)
A word from the "inside" of insurance, ask to speak to their team leader, they'll shit their pants. Put your case forward about how it is actually protective clothing and if that fails threaten to take them to the insurance ombudsman!
But on another note, good to know you're ok!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could write a book about ASB Insurance. I am sorry you have run foul of their "fine print" . They are not an insurance company, but the policy they promote is underwritten by IAG I believe. The fine print is where they have you by the short hairs, and there will be no arguing. I used to be insured by them (all very convienient when your life goes splat and you are a bit shell shocked eh) but no longer. Long story short, you know how they have an 0800 24/7 claims phone number? Well it is actually possible to ring it after hours  That was the reason they gave for not settling my claim anyway. Like I said a book is possible, but that will give you an idea. Utter wankers is more acurate mate.
A word from the "inside" of insurance, ask to speak to their team leader, they'll shit their pants.
No, no they wont, they will simply read the script that was prepared earlier for them and that will be that.

Just make sure its the right dose or you will be tripping!!! there is a reason Tramadol is not given to minors (it makes them commit sideways)...Right Tramadol, I work as an Orthopaedic (Bones) Nurse, so use this drug a lot. Works well for most but I don't like to give it to those over 80 and will not give it to those on anti-depressants. It causes patients on some anti-depressants to hallucinate and can spin the older patients out too. A few patients get bad nausea & vomiting on it, so I alway give the first dose with an anti-emetic (anti-vomit/nausea). In saying that it works well for most. Not subsided much so is not cheap out of the Hospital. Is better than Codeine IMHO, not as constipating (big problem in Orthopaedics due to all the pain relief we need ta dish-out). By the way Feijoas & Kiwi Fruit work well to counter constipation (must send Nick Myth a truck load).

Mornin' all,
Thanks again for all your great messages, really brightens up the day.
I thought I would share the piccies of my new left hand accessory.
Now, for those of you who may be wondering, this is the 'can do' and 'can't do's' associated with this, as follows....
I can.....
- Eat a pie
- Drink a beer
- Give my nosey bastard neighbour the finger
- Dial the ASB and let them know what a bunch of wankers they are
- Eat a pie
- Make a cup of tea
- Drink a cup of tea
- Tell mini Max that I am now a robot and I will eat his toys if he dont eat his dinner
- Change channels on the TV
- Eat a pie
- Play the harmonica
- Recieve a blow job......while eating a pie (though this has not been tested as yet)
I cannot.......
- Play the guitar
- Ride my bike
- Have a left handed wank (the type that feels like someone else is doing it)
- Cut the lawns (hurrah)
- Roll a joint (boooo)
So, all in all not too bad. At least I can eat a pie, otherwise I will be hammering the help lines
Thanks again you lovely people, really apprecaited

Ah, but we are talking about ASB Insurance here, and trust me on this there is only one way they operate, how they keep any kind of customers is beyond me. Try being told you rang them outside of business hours when they offer a 24/7 claims number  Impossible I hear you cry, but no it is possible, specially when it delays settlement of a claim. Talking higer up the food chain only results in more frustration. Still it is easily fixed - remove all insurances with them :D

I talked to the team manager and they said don't worry about it it's all sussed and I got more than I expected as a payout. Maybe I am one of the lucky ones.

It is all in the fine print of the policy mate. That is where they get you. IAG underwrite the banks policy. I reviewed the ASB one against the National Bank one, both underwritten by the same insurance company. HUGE difference in what you are insured for and all to do with a few litttle words.

Good to see your sense of humour didn't come to grief in the accident. also glad to see you can still eat pies, as it would really be a bloody cruel blow to the bakery industry just as they thought they'd made it thru the recession.

Quick update,
The Police have advised me that the cager involved in my little fracas on Monday (you know, the one that tried to fucking kill me) is being served with an infringement notice for failing to give way when turning right.
Sounds like it must have been my fault then...........ahem......
So, where's those crash stats?
At least I will get my excess paid, and I'm not talking about the excess around me belly.

She should be charged with careless driving causing injury! Honestly, an infrigement notice, how pathetic. Make the penalty count and perhaps it would encourage a few more to actually look before they leap so to speak.
FM, I reckon you should check in with Edbear if your fingers are still realy sore, he is on some good shit where he is

The hand is pretty stuffed, I have an appointement with the plastic surgery team next thursday to check out where we are with it. Rest of the 3 hectares of area that is my body is bruised and bashed, ribs giving me shit and a bruise the size of a fecking pizza on my left leg.
So, I am brushing up on my blues harp playing and digging in for a fight with ASB. Yes, they are paying out only $200 on a $600 jacket, $20 on a $100 pair of pants and $50 on a pair of $250 boots, all wrecked in the crash......bastards.....

Because ASB insurance is in fact IAG. I spoke with their 'Case Manager' today and all I got from the smug little 20 something corporate wanker was "thats the definition within the policy and I am doing you a favour by not depreciating more blah blah blah"
I did question how IAG can penalise someone for taking all the correct precautions when riding (not johnnys, I mean protective jacket, pants, lid and boots, observing the road rules, not causing the accident etc etc) but that made no difference to the arse punching twat.
So, even with Little Miss Cager (who recently graduated from the Stevie Wonder School of Motoring) paying out my excess, I'm still fecking $500 down on my gear. I am considering small claims to try and get the difference out of her but have differing opinions on how well that would go.

I encourage everyone insured with ASB/IAG to contact them within the next 5 business days to query their "definition within the policy". If only for your own peace of mind. It shouldn't take you too long, and it should send a message to the twats.
If they confirm their definition, let 'em know what you think about it.

Hey FM. Have you considered asking the Police, all innocent like, what steps you have to take to lay a private charge of "driving without due care and attention, causing injury".
You could explain that feel that your interests and the interests of other motorists at large aren't being considered and that the other driver needs a firm warning before she has another accident and maybe kills someone who the Police will then have to pick up.

Unless my rather rusty memory deceives I believe any citizen can lay a private information at Court. Some forms to fill and 'swear' on and probably a filing fee.

He can't help it. Being from Taupo. Apparently airborne sulphur rots the brain...
Look at it this way...
When one or more motor vehicles are involved in a crash, it is always the fault of at least one of the motorists. Because of motorcyclist's vulnerability, to avoid pain we have to hold ourselves to a higher state of attention, therefore if we are in a crash, it can be said that it was 'our fault' for letting it happen.
Accidents, however, are a very different flavour, and are exceedingly rare.

At this time they have decided to splint it until next Thursday when I go and see the specialist at the super clinic. Personally I would have preferred if they had just done the biz but there is so little money around at the front line of the health service that the cheaper options are the better. Dont blame the docs and nurses though, they are legends.

Work as a Orthopaedic Nurse. Often they delay Operating on bones until the swollen tissue around the fracture has well and truly reduced. This is because tissue gets irritated during operations. This causes more swelling of the tissues in that area. That increases the risk of cutting off the blood supply and the nerve supply in the part of limb on the other side to the heart down from and including the swollen area. That can very quickly cause the tissue in that area to start dying. In Orthopaedics we call this "Compartment Syndrome". That is why as Ortho Nurses we are looking at Colour (pale, red or normal), Warmth (cold, hot or warm), Movement (can they move the limb) and Sensation (pain, tingling, numbness or normal) on the area past the fracture/wound, to see if it is getting a good blood supply and normal nerve function.
So in short, it is not alway the best idea for them to operate straight away. Especially fingers and toes (easier to have promblems in smaller limbs).

Hypothetical question for you.
If a motorcyclist is riding along obeying all the road rules, and suddenly, seeing a short skirt walking down the road turns his head and goes "Phoooar", then turns back to what he's doing only to discover an unavoidable car turned into his path, should he consider himself in any way partially responsible for the outcome?
(And I'm not saying this is the case in this particular incident - it could just as easily have been a pie shop).
And is that a guy sucking off another guy in your avatar?

The crash investigation will say that speed was the issue.

Hear that, trouble is when a person decides to turn across you when you are 2m away from them, there is only so much you can do.
For ther record:
1 - I was mpt speeding (40km/hr)
2 - I dropped off the throttle when I felt she was going to move
3 - She went for a gap that had me in it
4 - I was wearing protective gear and, in the opinion of Police and witnesses, was riding safely and correctly

It was a great relief to get the big metal splint taken off (although it did make a rather handy bottle opener) and now I have a moulded splint attached to the damaged finger.
The rest of me is still battered and bruised but hey, thats life. No offers of a spa with the Vodafone Warriors Cheerleaders to soothe my aching bones, they must be busy with a new dance routine or something. I'll leave them another message tomorrow.
So, three months away from riding the bike or playing the geetar but I'm on the mend, thanks to all of you for your kind messages. My harmonica playing is coming along so it's not all bad.
Also, am having a hooer of a battle with ASB re the fecking tiny payback on my wrecked jacket. I am loving this though, its a real challenge. The latest exchange has them considering a review of policy for PPE worn when riding. Not saying it will come to much but if I can at least get the bastards to admit they are lying, cheating scum then it will be a great world.
Thats it so far then. I am keeping all my chins up thanks to the great messages from you lovely peeps, thanks a bunch.

Well, I am as happy as a fat bastard who has just inherited the biggest pie factory in the world.
Had my weekly visit to the clinic and, well, bugger me senseless and call me Denise, but my hand is just about all good. Cant believe it and neither can the specialist. The dislocation has righted itself and the tendons are mending at record speed.
Net result is that I can take the splint off and can now form a fist. Doc has said it is ok to get back on the geetar and all in all I will be back in the saddle in 3-4 weeks, thats about 4 weeks ahead of schedule.
I'm fecking wrapped, all my other bumps and bruises are all gone and life is well on the up. It's a fecking great life and I am loving it.
So there you go my lovelies. Lock up your larder's cos I will be back on the road at a bakery near you soon.
Thanks again for all the messages you lovely people. If only I could snog you all.........

Pleased you are on the mend FM
They do say time heals all wounds, somehow I think dropping a bike on ones body as the result of a silly tart was not the original intent of the message though ;)
All the same keep up your therapy

Thought I would bore you all one more time with my final update.
The hand is all good and in working order.......and I paid up on my new bike today...!!! Yay fecity hey, she is a minter and it gets delivered on Monday. Also got my new jacket and lid (no thanks to those wankers at ASB / AIG Insurance) so all in all I shall be back in the saddle next week.
So, from 10th May 2010 to today, it's been an interesting experience especially dealing with ACC , insurance companies and the police. I could not have done it without all the brilliant messaged from KB'rs, thanks again guys and gals.

Hyosung Aquilla, real nice one and within the budget afforded to me by the bastard insurance companies.
It will keep me going for a while and is fat bastard friendly until I get my full and convince the missus that I really do need a decent 1100cc machine...

Well done, Congrats!
Being partial to a touch of the cheap sparkling vino named Aquila, I have in the past considered getting an Aquila badge for my own stead.
Enjoy - and post pics as soon as.

Nice how do you find this bike compared to the VL250?

Well, it certainly is a bigger bike, much heavier. Has just about the same amount of grunt from the start but yet to stretch it's legs on the open road. Certainly more comfortable though. One thing I did notice straight away is that the gear changers are softer, not as clunky as the VL. NIce to have a fuel gauge and rev counter as well.
