View Full Version : Buying new front discs - are there standards?

Hi guys,

Its been awhile since I've been on the road and I'm trying to get my old CBR250RR back on the road. It's been dereg'd and when I went to get a compliance check, the guy said I needed new front disc's.

Ive been looking around and I found a pair on ebay but I'm hesitant to buy them as I dont know if there is a certain standards number that the discs need on them.

Could anyone clairify?

On a side note, does anyone have any front disc's for sale?

I assume they failed due to obvious wear. If so then any aftermarket M/B discs are fine provided they are the same thickness as the original new ones.

Careful....
There are about 500 things to consider as well....
Like, Off-set, Spacing for the Bolts, Diameter, Floating/ Fixed... okay, not 500, but a few...

Any aftermarket Discs that are for YOUR motorcycle will be fine. As a matter of course, as they are new, they will be thick enough, and all the other criteria will be satisfied.

All you will need is two pieces of paper:
- A photocopy of the catalogue (or print out of the website) page that lists what part number fits your model of bike (i.e. Honda - CBR250RR MC22 - Front - MCDH557 (I made up that number)
- A photocopy of your receipt that shows that you have purchased that particular part number

Piece of cake. Get the same for your brake pads.

The standard is... there is no standard.

But don't you dare try to fit a tailight that doesn't have the correct markings! That's dangerous.

If you have no evidence as to their compliance (lens markings or documentation) they don't comply.

But my point was that there is no standard for something as critical as a brake rotor, but they have light lenses covered. Makes you feel safe, eh...

Yes, there are standards for brake rotors, and pads, go look em up :yes:

If you're worried about standards, go and look at the standards applied to drivers in this country, far bigger problem than anything on the vehicles themselves.

For compliance. Not in-service certification. Driving incompetence is another issue altogether, but I agree.

Ah yes there are BUT they are all about cars , all you need is a brake declaration cert from and VTNZ will be happy

Unless it's manufactured after 1 October 2002 (http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/virm-entry-cert/docs/ic-8-brakes.pdf). (just adding that so if anyone searches they get the full story).

No, not all about cars.

Correct, it cover L-class. A motorcycle is LC.
