great to hear that you are doing so well Ed!!!!! Don't get too skinny though!

I looked at a photo of me in hospital and I looked like a beached whale! Much better now, but I'd like to get under the 90kg mark. Ideally I'd like to get down to about 85kg, but whether that's realistic I'm not sure.

I am losing muscle-tone though, which is annoying, as I can't exercise. I've got to be as sedentary as I can to avoid moving the vertebrae around.

Had the visit from the very nice lady assessor this morning. I'm getting a bunch of stuff. The Hospital wants their equipment back, so that will be replaced plus an electric Laz-E-Boy  and a table for my laptop will be provided. I'll get a stool for the kitchen so I can sit to make my lunch, as I can't stand long enough to make a sandwich.

Trudy, my caregiver, was spoken to to make sure she had enough time to care for me properly each day and was able to help me explain what I needed.

My new case manager rang later in the morning to ask how I got on and emphasised that if I had any concerns or needed anything, to call her anytime.

So while being forced into a sedentary lifestyle for at least the next six weeks and the surgeon says will take months to heal up, I can't complain about much can I? :sunny:

My wife cracked us up last night again. Snuggling up to me in bed she says," I can put my arm right around you!"

 Well, genuine Tupperware isn't cheap these days... We use Clik-lok for the good stuff and mostly use those Chinese Takeaway containers. They last a while and when you run out you're "forced" to go and get some Chinese again!.:innocent:

Trouble is we have a cupboard full of these containers now as they last longer than we can go without Chicken Chow Mein and Cashew Nuts...

It was great to meet a couple more KB'rs in person! And of course being Suzuki riders, they were granted VIP status, (although they may not have noticed the difference... :shifty:).

Now that Germany is out of the World Cup, Balu, naturally, is backing the Netherlands to beat Spain and take the title. It's going to be an interesting game for sure!

I'm getting a bit "over it" with this injury, got another 5 weeks in the brace until the next x-ray but getting restless. Keeping myself busy as possible but since that pretty much entails working or playing on the laptop or watching TV, my choices are somewhat limited. So having nice surprises like KB'rs popping in makes my day! :niceone:

Yeah... horspittle is an excellent place to lose weight. The first time I was in (burst appendix), I lost about 5kg, and I was already a lean machine back then. This time, I gained 6 (fluid), then lost that plus another 6-ish. Despite now being on semi-proper food, my weight's still going down. Wish it was just fat, but it seems to be mostly muscle.
Anyway, good on you Ed, for remaining positive, and all the best for a speedy recovery. :niceone: (I'm off to see if I can hang up the washing, despite being expressly prohibited from doing so...)

You need the pill I take at night - mirtazapine (http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/588676). It helps me to sleep, but it also makes me hungry. It's actually a mild(ish) antidepressant, but is also used to treat anorexics or others who have trouble putting on weight. I've got used to it now, but it used to make me want to eat all the time.

Yes it really is amazing what stress can do for body weight, without even realising it. Over the past 3 months I have dropped about 6 kg, and I really didn't have that to spare before hand. Now the lightest that I have been since I was about 18. Yikes! Hopefully, when things calm down a little I can focus on putting that back on, and be a little healthier.

Oh Ed - my story of eating habbits and food would absolutely fascinate you! Will have to tell you my whole story one day, I have got my doctors stumped!

Now you've got me curious! I'd love to hear your story! I have to admit 6kg is a lot for someone your size. However, if you're still around your late-teens weight you're okay. I haven't been this weight since I was in my late 30's! I was shocked to see my ribs this morning!

I was drying my hands yesterday and the ring my daughter bought for me fell off! I broke my wedding ring months ago and was going to get it remoulded bigger as it had been resized twice in the past already but this week I just got it repaired and it's a wee bit too big now.

Just a quick wee update. I weighed myself this morning without the brace on and I've reached 88kg! I'm really chuffed! :sunny:

Got my next appointment with the surgeon on 11th Aug. and am hoping the x-ray will confirm my feeling that the bone is starting to heal and that I will be able to dispense with the brace.

I've cut way down on the painkillers now and the brace is getting annoying so I'm hopeful I can chuck it away.

I don't recommend having your 4 year old grandson sleep with you though if you have a bad back. He fell asleep in our bed and instead of moving him to the spare bed, Jill left him with me. Aston gets a bit hot at night and as he was turning sideways and kicked the blankets off he got me twice in the back... and once in the eye! :bye: He's quite strong, will make a good footballer....

I've got a Doc app this morning, got a sharp pain high on right side under armpit. Feels like a knife stabbing me in the rib. Hi, Edbear! Glad to hear you're still doing OK. :niceone:
Like you, I'm losing weight - lost about 7kg in the last few weeks. And also like you, I've had some annoying and random pains. One that I never sussed out (but which hasn't recurred, thank goodness!) was a very sharp pain (about a 9) in my right lower back. Dunno what it was, but I had a feeling if I went into A&E about it, it would mysteriously disappear. It only hurt when I breathed in or out.:shit: Think it might have been kidney related, but in the end, I managed to make it hurt all the time (which was better, for some perverse reason), then I found it easier to try to ignore, dropped off to sleep, and it was mostly gone when I work up. Now I've just gotta sort out why my left shoulder is buggered. Mentioned it to a couple of medical professionals, and they were stumped. Just have to keep taking paracetamol and using hot compresses, I guess.
Anyway, sorry - didn't mean to turn this into ravings about myself - just wanted to encourage you to keep positive, keep healing, and maybe we'll see you out and about soon.

Goodonyermate! Yeah, the Doc was pretty thorough but did say we can get all sorts of issues when we're coping with a serious injury. And me being in a substantial brace for most of the day means extra stress on other parts of the body. When sleeping you can favour the injured part which can irriitate the healthy bits. :bye:

It's likely that the brace has irritated the nerves and cartiledge under my arm and that the Tramadol was hiding the worst of the pain. So when I ran out and decided to make do with just the Panadol, the irritation became more pronounced as the Tramadol left the system. So I'm back on Tramadol and Diclophenac.

Upshot is be patient, put up with it and manage the pain best as you can and wait for things to heal. He congratulated me on my weight loss though. I was so chuffed I took a pic, but I was in my undies and I don't think I should post that on here... I did send it to my Mum, who's very pleased with me. My brother dared me to post it on facebook, but I'd probably be banned if I did that. If I posted it here, it would no doubt become someone's avatar or something...

And just to cap off a lovely day...and very briefly hi jack your thread...

Got home to find the sealed papers from Court in my mail box! Yippee!

For those who have missed it, ive been fighting since the day after my Husbands funeral last year to keep our home. His family have supported his adult sons in having me removed from the home and forcing the sale so they can have his money. Well guess what? Do NOT fuck wiv Ratti, Im nice until you get me cornered.

Ahem, anyway. I get to keep our home, buy them out for a very small % of the value of the property. But it's doable.

Anyway, come party to celebrate wiv your ol' mate Ratti. 21st August, pm me for details.

Cheers!

Just back from Greenlane and my appointment with the Orthopaedic Surgeon. Good news, I was very apprehensive and was hoping the x-ray would show some improvement, but was very happy to see the bone has knitted together nicely! I can ditch the brace, finally after 12 weeks!

I have to continue to be very careful, especially now. No bending, still can't drive and have to spend less time sitting up, more time resting. So I'll still need my caregiver every day  who has been giving me those wonderful massages for at least the next four weeks until I am reassessed again.

However I can now begin some physio such as walking and swimming. At first, he said all I may be able to do is walk around the pool, but as long as I don't hurt my back, let the pain decide how much I do. He congratulated me on losing weight and encouraged me to lose a wee bit more, which I've been working on and am now down to 88kg and going for 85. At the time of my accident I was about 100kg! :shit: So Mrs. Bear and I are very happy today! :sunny:

Doc's been around and shoved his finger up my butt, checked my leg function and gotta have urine test to see how the nerves are working. So far so good...

Hope to get scans tomorrow. Gonna shift the bed over so I can see the harbour. Pretty Chinese nurse being very nice to me... :shifty: Hope they get me my drugs soon, bit sore at the mo. :bye:

The vertebrae that was smashed, while knitted together, has been squashed and the spine is collapsing forward. Like flattening a sponge with your hand. Sheduled for next week not got day yet but the MRI and CT showed not very good and I've been told to be very careful about moving as it's rather delicate right now. Gotta have complete bed-rest. Not quite what I wanted either, love... Still I have little choice, as the surgeon said the op is voluntary but I said "What's the alternative?" He said, "Well, you don't really have one.." My nerves are being affected now and the MRI showed pressure on the spinal cord so I'm under strict instructions to be very careful until the op as it's all rather delicate in there.

Paid a visit to Ed today and found him absolutely lapping up all the wonderful attention from his dedicated team of nurses. He has one of the best views over Auckland city I have ever seen and the sun was streaming in to his room. He has all the creature comforts a bloke needs, I saw laptop, radio, phone, bike magazines, chocolates to name but a few.

He has also kept it very quiet that he is sharing a room with a woman that is not his wife :gob: Mind you Jill (his lovely lady wife) is an absolute hunny and this one was not in the best of moods today, if I am completely honest. Poor thing she must have been feeling terrible, I got a growling for laughing :shit:

Sweety, apart from the tossers, we ALL wish you weren't facing this crisis.

No such thing as a BigBoy in this situation dude, sometimes it's ok to feel like a helpless kid. In this case, its practically mandatory as you have so little control over the process. Information is good. Drive them nuts wanting to know EVERYTHING about the process ( if you havent already that is )

You and Jill have each other and that counts for a lot.

Thanks sweety! Yeah, I know, I have few questions to ask, important stuff like, "Can I have copies of the scans and x-rays and are you going to film it and if so can I please have a copy to show my friends..?"

The surgeon's, (yep two of them), were very open and informative and said to write anything down so I'd remember to ask when I see the anaethetist so I've got a couple or three on my notepad.

My darling wife is really being my rock right now, just wish I could be at home for the night and cuddle up before the op. Though if they do it Tuesday I'll get to see her tomorrow night.

My Mum's been txting me and I know she's concerned for me but she's down in Kawerau so will probably come up afterwards.

I just keep telling myself they're doing this sort of thing every day and they know what they're doing, so I'm sure I'll be fine... :sunny:

Ed has a smashed Lower Vertebra (L1)
He is in Ward 7 at Auckland Hospital.
I have spoken to him, I did here a small laugh but I fear its the drugs.

The posterior/anterior approach sounds scarey but it allows good stabilisation with caging & bone grafts. You will have an opiate PCA(patient controlled analgesia) and Im sure you will be a model patient!:niceone:

Ah, so you'll have seen it all then! Fascinating learning about it, for sure. Have a couple of issues to work through before surgery, now scheduled for Thurs. They've asked for my bone density scans for the Osteoporosis from an Illness I've been treated for.

He has also kept it very quiet that he is sharing a room with a woman that is not his wife

Thoughts and prayers with you all. Give my love to Jill and the rest of your lovely family.

Hope he gets a good nights sleep Ed? :innocent:
Longish proceedure isn't it?

We've spent a couple days working through some issues, and have decided to do a less invasive op going through the back only and not also through the front. Still a major one, but less risky. Result may not be as perfect, but I'm happier as it's still going to do the job with quicker recovery and far less risk. Less pain afterwards, too, which prob won't mean much on Friday and Sat. but should mean less time in hosp. So yes a long and tricky op even so, but better than what I got now.

I did some research, (yeah, I'm one of those pains who has to know everything...:innocent:), and my respect for the surgeon went up a few more notches! It was scary stuff reading about it even after they'd described it to me. Mr. Don comes highly recommended and I'd got a second opinion from another surgeon who came to the same opinion, so it was good to see both in agreement.

So won't know full extent of what he can do until he gets in there and starts playing around, I kinda hope he'll get very close to doing as well as the full op, but his only concern is the fact that the injury is four months old so can't guarantee how much he can achieve.

Went to see Ed today. He was a bit miserable, some meany person had tried to put him in brace and as a result he was feeling a bit sick with the pain, but he had a lovely smile. Might try to get back tomorrow, we did not stay long. Drugs are good, and certainly work quickly, but we did not want to stay and tucker him out, he had others to "entertain", and there is plenty of time to out stay our welcome once he feels a lot better. I know how wonderful it is to see visitors when you are really sick, and how nice it is when they have gone.

Took him some grapes, but he is only allowed sips of water today :pinch: so I got to eat a few of them for him, very yummy I must say. The big bad meanie has not attempted to put his brace back on, and he says the nurses looking after him are wonderful, which of course they are. Well, I did come home on Monday afternoon, but it was an endurance test for sure, despite my daughter having a comfy Honda Odysee!

I've not been well for the first couple of days, but much better today, (Yay for drugs!)

The op was a success though, the surgeon was pleased, the Registrar was pleased the Anaethsetist was pleased and I hurt.. I was told it was a major operation and that pain would be an issue for about 6mths, but you know how we are, eh? I'm on Panadol, Tramadol and Morphine and I'm coping as long as I'm careful.

I get to miss out on my massage for a while though, due to the obvious wounds that need to heal, but I still get moisturised. Showering is a longer, slower exercise too. I get my lunch made for me as well before my caregiver leaves. She really spoils me! Brings me my Berocca and a coffee and makes my lunch...

This new brace is a bit slimmer and more comfortable than the last one and my lower back is much better now without that extra strain on it. I'm waiting for my scans to come to me so I'll see if I can post a pic or two of the before and after shots. The before xray was scary to see and I could understand him putting me straight into hospital. The spinal cord was being compressed and the spine had collapsed, crushing the broken vertebrae and twisting 32 degrees out of alignment. In was put on strict bedrest until the op.

I'm now down to 82kg! From 98kg at the time of the accident on 12th May. I look in the mirror now and try to remember what it was like to be 16kg heavier! :shit:

It's great to be back home again! :sunny:

Well, some say strong will, others say doggedly stubborn, I say, "Drugs! Gimmee drugs!"

Didn't really have a choice, I asked the Doc what the alternative was after he described the operation and he sorta gave me that thoughtful, knowing look that only surgeons seem to perfect and replied, "Well, you don't really have one..."

We've, (Mrs. Bear and me), been working on what to do as my accident and operation means I'm going to be handing Plumbers NZ over, not being able to run it effectively. The business has been growing fast and needs intensive input now to take it to the next level as we relaunch www.plumbers.co.nz which is going to be HUGE! So while convalescing we've been developing a new concept in business, and I'm posting a thread about it in Rant and Rave. Called WebNuts, the new venture aims to capitalise on the contacts and reputation I've built up as a merchant/importer. Check it out! This is the concept stage, to build on my Fire & Light business.

WebNuts has given me an enthusiasm for getting back into business again. I was a bit down about PLumbers NZ, knowing I couldn't do it justice, so Rudy and I got together and agreed he should take it over as part of his restructuring - he and Jenni have gone into a partnership with another plumbing company and the new partners will take over the plumbing team - freeing Rudy and Jenni up to develop Plumbers NZ Ltd. and YHP, the web design business which is Rudy's passion.

WebNuts is something Jill and I can develop as I recuperate, not requiring a lot of hours and has grown out of Fire & Light which is starting to percolate nicely.

What a beautiful day today! While Mrs. Bear was out weeding the garden, I thought I'd sit out and watch... I'm good like that, I help around the house...

So being so sunny and warm, it was time to soak up some Vitamin D. Can't take my shirt off as yet as I can't get up without the brace on, so here's to what I could do! :sunny:

Well it was 12 weeks the first time, so I'm not sure this time. I see my surgeon on Wed so hopefully he can let me know then. It will be a while though as progress is very slow and the pain levels are still pretty high.

Ahhh... yeah... Becoming paraplegic wasn't an appealing option... :bye:

I just have to make sure I don't stuff it up now.

Had my followup appointment and x-rays this morning, and the surgeon was pleased with progress. The x-rays were freaky to see all the screws and rods. They're going to send me copies so when I get them I'll post them up.

They must have taken a fair chunk of bone from my hip to rebuild the crushed vertebrae though as the before and after shots were very different! No wonder my hip is a bit sore...

He reiterated that it was a major op though, so I'm in the brace for another 7 weeks at least and I'm not allowed out of bed without it on. :bye:

But at least I can walk around and don't feel too bad after today's tripping around. We went and visited our daughter in Penrose afterwards. It's the movement of the car, not just over bumps but also braking that gets me. I learned to relax the torso and use my hands to steady me under brakes as tensing up hurts a bit.

Same turning over in bed, I have to do it slowly and deliberately, relaxing the tummy muscles and use my elbows and hands otherwise my back goes into spasm, ouch!

But Hey! I'm happy, and alive, and drugs are good and I'm getting spoiled every day! :sunny:

That's great news Ed. Although there are advantages to being older- fast healing is not one of them.

Take care and one day at a time.

Got a pic this morning, healing up nicely! Feels weird, though! Got a bulge in my left side that's got the Doc a bit puzzled, so he's sending me for an utra-sound at Nth Shore, and I emailed my surgeon the pics as well. No pain with it, but it looks strange, the look on the Doc's face was priceless! He'd never seen anything like it!

I also got hold of the pics the NZ Herald photographer took of the accident.

Got my next appointment with my surgeon today, it's on 8th Dec. so here's hoping for good news! Also today arrived in the mail the DVD I asked for of my scans! So for a feast of pictures for you I've attached a before showing the collapsed vertebrae and three after the op.

That does not look too good there Ed. When are they going to find out what is causing this?

Looks like I might be joining you soon - I can hardly walk...... might need another back op - different disk this time, and blow me down! Nothing has happened to me in order to bring this on either

I think it's a weakness in the muscle wall, but I'm still waiting for my Ultra Sound appointment. If not get it before, maybe the surgeon may have an opinion when I see him on 8th Dec.

Might have tweaked it sometime without realising it? Have you woken up in the morning with a pain, (no not him...), and put it down to how you were lying? Disc problems can come on gradually and then become suddenly noticeable once they've had enough. Then maybe you're just gettin' old...

Everything in moderation, as I learned today! I escaped from the house and took the MX5 out to Tim's, (Classic_Z), for its WoF and of course it flew through.. (typical Jap sports car). On the way back I decided to get the groceries as Mrs. Bear had to work until 6pm. However after getting home and putting them away, I was sore, tired and sweating like the proverbial! I was exhausted!

I had to completely change clothes and take a couple of Morphine and go to bed!

Oh I got my caregiver to take another pic of my back this morning. The scars are healing nicely now.

Happy day!!!!! :sunny: I saw my surgeon this morning and he was pleased with the x-rays which showed everything in order. Nothing has moved or loosened so I can GET RID OF THE BRACE!!!!! :woohoo:

He said it may be a gradual withdrawal and that it will hurt a bit for a while and I may need to wear it at times until my muscles strengthen up, but to start by leaving it off a few hours a day. I can start gentle water exercising again so I'll be going back to the Leisure Center for water aerobics with the old ladies again. :msn-wink: Maybe this time I'll even be able to keep up with them...

I just quietly and off-handedly sorta asked if I might be able to ride again... :innocent: but his "No!" :spanking: sounded fairly definite... :bye:

He congratulated me for being a good boy and not stuffing up his fine work and said he'll see me again in two months. So now begins the long rehab to trim and tone and get fit again! Look out world, here I come! :wings:

However, I can recommend the drugs they use for gastroscopies, instant off the planet. The staff are absolutely fantastic too.

The perscription for recovery sounds mighty fine to me, rest, no stress etc. I was thinking a move to Rarotonga was on the cards, now all I have to do is win Lotto and all will be sweet
