The road was still closed this morning when we went into Oamaru shopping, this is not a good look, there appears to be cage mischief afoot here!

All will be revealed in good time I hope but it seems that the motorcyclist was hit more than once before he was actually attended to!

The conditions were pretty foggy this morning guess that may have been a feature at the time of the incident too!

I am reviewing our own visibility factors when on our bike, got a glimpse of it the other day when another person was riding my bike, needs improvements that's for sure!

I didn't see them officer, I can just hear it now but there could be some justification, if I don't improve things, sooner rather than later! :shit:

that over the last few weeks a young soldier was killed on his bike by a car driver and now this young man. Young men going somewhere in life and making their way, taken out and killed through no fault of their own, yet we know little about them and there is little comment in the media.

Then a kid at an exclusive private school steals a bottle of Vodka, gets seriously fucked up and dies; and the media are full of what a tragedy it is and how Somebody Should Do Something. Completely self inflicted, and no less a tragedy for the people left behind, but how come when a rich kid drinks himself to death it's time to deal with teen alcohol abuse, yet when a couple of young men on bikes get killed by cars nobody bats an eyelid?

Death on the road is so common that joe public has become immune to it. Not much of a story here for the mainstream media, but the kid story sells papers.

I agree that death on the road is common, but then so is death through alcohol abuse - possibly even more common. And how much handwringing would have gone on if the two young men on bikes had been women driving cars or doctors on bicycles? I think it comes down to motorcyclists being seen as more expendible than other people.

So can someone please explain to me why the youth Suicide rate in NZ is higher than the National Road Toll, and has been for around eight years. Yet it gets no funding and very little media exposure or public empathy...

Because youth suicide is, to be brutally honest, a little embarrassing. Admitting that we're failing so many young people when we live in such a brave new world does not win votes, and it takes a major ideological shift by the whole of our society to deal with, whereas road deaths are easy - more TV ads, more speed cameras and cops hiding behind trees filiming dodgy overtaking wins votes and costs bugger all.

It all comes down to newsworthiness. People die on the road every day - it doesn't have shock value.

One any day, the drunken behaviour of some rugby player will be more newsworthy than the hundreds of people who died in an earthquake in some third world country. Those earthquake victims will also be overshadowed by the latest gossip about Tiger Woods. A police dog being injured in the line of duty will rate higher than any road death.

The New Zealand road toll dictates that on average at least one person will die each day in a road accident. Whose turn it is today is simply part of the background of life - unfortunate, but inevitable.

Which is interesting as if they (Politicians) stopped and though - shit if these young people were alive think of how much revenue we could take off them in Tax's, speeding fines etc... Hell god forbid any of them ever got their lives sorted out and progressed to become a Politician, Tax man or Constable, Doctor etc ;)

Lol my rant over.

Your right, to a degree... I've read posts here from experienced riders who are proud to not bin a bike every year or so, it can be done.
I've noticed that those riders just go quietly about their business clocking up the miles they also tend to get shyt for it to.

I agree totaly, just proves my point on the view of the media today having a political agenda in order to atract ratings, the more people feed off the political interpretations (no longer do they just report the news to us so we can see what is happening over our fences.) they broadcast the more stories they have to follow! (perhaps they missed the political angle on this one...) this is issue as you mention seems to be all too frequently misrepresented as a sad tragety that was unavoidable, bollocks!

The kiwis I've spoken to seem to think the death sentence is appropriate for anyone on two wheels. Murder can apparently be forgiven but riding on two wheels? Death sentence and it's apparently your own fault even if you're hit by a blind drunkard. Go figure.

So to get back on topic... Police found a burnt out Nissan Skyline not far down the road from the accident scene, this car had been involved in a crash and local residents near the scene described hearing the accident followed by a loud car accelerating away. The Police are seeking the occupants of the car, they also want to hear from anyone who saw the light silver 1995 Skyline GTS on the road between Christchurch and Oamaru early on Thursday morning.

Sad indeed, there are many things that seem odd with regard to this one from my take on it.

One thing I am noticing is the media have not seemed to make a comment on whether the car had been reported stolen or not, and we all know skylines have a tendency to be owned by the boy racer types. I am kind of watching this simply out of interest in the way society treats it and if when the killer is finally goes through the system what actually happens to them.

Thought go out to the family, and the folks doing the hard yards and investigating this as I suspect its going to be full of blind corners.

Obviously he did, if he got rid of the plates, chasis number etc who would notice that all of a sudden he has no car!
Seriously, these young people can be as thick as pig shit.
Damn sad story for all concerned..even the driver has a little of my sympathy. Got in over his head and made it worse...poor bastard. He will be spending some time in jail but at least he can come out of it and make a new life for himself, the young rider will never be a father, will never grow old...death comes to us all and it is up to us to make the most of the days that we live.

Well done Police!

It was very murky and foggy around the time of the incident/accident so it may not be as devious as it sounds, I await the outcome of further Police investigation!

Murky and foggy requires the utmost care and even then, if you're involved in an accident tearing off down the road to remove your vehicle's ID tags is not exactly kosher. If that's what this individual did. Just a charge at this stage, we'll see, sounds a bit suss though. (Where's my rope?)

Great work by the police in tracking these people from the car down. It is so awful to imagine the accident, and that a fellow human would drive off, concerned only about covering his tracks.
