Tramway Motors owner Rick Tretheway said the car had been at his garage for a new clutch in April, when he noticed it was modified and did not steer well.

"In my view, it was not running legal. It steered like a pig, it wasn't right ... it was all over the road.

"The suspension wasn't right, it bumped all over the road. It just wasn't fit to be on the road," he said.

Mr Tretheway said he told Jesse and his father John that the car was not safe.

When the car was put on a hoist to be inspected, John Langeveld ordered it taken off. The Langevelds later took the car away, Mr Tretheway said

John Langeveld later admitted he had ordered the car to be taken off the hoist, but said he believed the car was roadworthy because it had a warrant of fitness.

(my bolding)

Note: Ethan Peek was meant to be the sober driver - the other kid wad driving:

It was a point picked up by Mr Peek's father Gil, who said at the end of the inquest that while the boys were responsible for the crash, it could have been prevented earlier in the night if the police had picked up on their drinking.

I bet that the father will be living with that for the rest of his life - despite it not being the sole cause of the crash (piss and speed dosnt help).

I hate it when the paper says something like "Jesse William Langeveld, Tylar James Parry and Ethan James Peek died on July 3, after Mr Langeveld's highly modified Honda Civic smashed into a wall at Powerstore in Leven St."

Its not highly modified - they fuck their cars and it should be mentioned as such. He fucked with suspension by cutting / heating springs and made the car dangerous and unusable - and their own stupidity contributed to their deaths.

Perhaps them more parents will look at their kids cars and see that they are turning them into death traps.

And the kids think it improves "handling" - useless little twats - if they cannot feel how bad it makes the car - they shouldn't be allowed to drive.

I'm not sure about that - the other father wants to blame the Police for the crash. I suspect neither of those guys will take any responsibility.

"Intended to have it checked somewhere else" - bullshit!

He got them out of two Pink stickers before that night. Surely he realised the car was illegal? And what kind of person thinks a car is safe sitting on the bumpstops? Kids need to be taught how to lower a car safely and properly! (Good quality shocks, progressive/stiffer springs etc).

Well, if you murder your grandfather, and there's no time-travel involved - there's no issue with you not existing....

This sad and sorry saga also highlights the myth of the WOF. A WOF doesn't certify a vehicle as being safe until its next WOF. It only certifies that it complied with the various regulations at the time it was inspected. The sticker on the windscreen has no knowledge of some twat subsequently taking a gas axe to the suspension springs. Vehicles like the Civic in question have all of the road-holding ability of a hockey puck.

Young men, testosterone, alcohol, speed and risk taking. Nothing tastes sweeter when it all works. And statistically it works more often than it doesn't. That's why young men do this shit. Some of us even get to live to be old men and appreciate that a good measure of luck gave us this privilege which is denied to so many others, such as these three young chaps in Invercargill. No amount of "education" or mollycoddling will stop this sort of tragedy. Us blokes are hardwired to do this and have been ever since somebody thought it was a good idea to jump on a horse and stick something hot up its arse.

Says it all really.Saddest thing apart from the obvious is how far people have sunk in this country from accepting any responsinbility for there own actions and go on a witch hunt to rid themselves of any.

People need to remember when they point 'the finger', there are three point back at them.

Hmm, another waste of life.

The thing that raises my interest is the father of the owner of the car, "I felt I was being rail roaded by the workshop"...what a moron.

Perhaps they where explaining how much it would cost to rectify the fault, and no-one wanted to hear the reality (I wonder if dad "helped" with the modifications........., then, he tried to suggest that the cops where at fault for not pulling it off the road earlier (wasn't he told at the workshop it was unsafe?)

the real victims here are the owner of the workshop (try getting a WOF there now), and (believe it or not) the cops who pulled the vehicle over earlier in the night (and the ones who let the little turd bag off a pink sticker earlier in the month)

We all cry for leniency "for the little things" when it comes to the cops......I suspect a "zero tolerance" now exists in Invercargill......just another excuse for the powers that be to clamp down on us.

Not with progressive, stiffened springs and the correct shocks they dont. Unless you're trying to hoon it over a majorly potholed road, or on gravel!

Although I think mine has about 2 inches or so....

The modifications made to the car were discussed heavily during the inquest, with several witnesses telling the court the car should not have been on the road.

Hopefully Mr Honda sues the father for allowing his extremely safe vehicle to be fucked with, which affects the reputation of his motor company.

Mr Darwin. Superb work.
