I hear Mr Shadrock has been found guilty of murder rather than manslaughter in the Auckland bag-snatch + run over case.

Good.

Not manslaughter... isn't that pretty much unheard of these days... 1 less scumbag on the streets for quite a while then... sweet.

at a cost of $70,000 per annum if he goes to a privately run prison (soon mt eden), or $45,000 if he goes to a govt run prison.
I say we make 'em into gladiators and fight eachother to the death for our entertainment. they did murder people afterall, they are experts at it.

Lets just wait and see how those figures stack up in fact, if it actually happens long enough to evaluate the difference, it should make interesting reading! :shifty:

Trouble is nothing ever gets to fruition before the other silly pricks (whatever persuasion) come in and change it.

I suspect the source of your figures may be somewhat under stated, the actual cost of incarceration of a prisoner for a calender year is in excess of $97,000p/a. I dare say a private prison will still recieve the same, but will cut costs in labour, and management to make a bigger profit as they do in the states and in Australia.
It's a good job he was found guilty, hopefully he'll do some serious time for his crime and not get parole for a reasonable stint. Another person destined for care at Parry no doubt. My thoughts are that NZ should follow the usa and focus on incarceration rather than rehabilitation. We should spend as little as possible on criminals and then make them pay it back upon release............

Hehe, lawyers, morals, hehe.
To be fair on them, we need defence lawyers no matter how bad a rap they get from cases like this. I'm just thankful the Jury made the right decision.

Bullshit.

Lawyers love money.

They also get paid more, the longer a trial lasts.
And they tend to get paid in cash. Cash the client has doubtless got selling P..

Yep my thoughts as well, but although he didn't mean to kill her the actions of premeditated theft led to murder so guess it's win win.

Regarding the cost of prisons, couldn't' we just outsource them, pay some other country 30 grand a year per prisoner, and let them take them off our hands? They get some revenue, we make a saving, win win...

Though I guess we don't really want another Australia on our hands :p
