View Full Version : Feijoas!
So, I've just this minute got home after getting another KBer to do all the hard work for me fitting a Tail Tidy, so I figured what better time to ask for more stuff that I want.
Anyone in the greater Wellington area have a Feijoa tree that is producing so much, you couldn't possibly eat them all, and they are just lying on the ground rotting, and going to waste? I want to hear from you!
These things are like crack! I'm hooked and every year I start jonesing for my fix.
My mum bought down a large shopping bag full of them last weekend when she visited, and they lasted a week before I scoffed the lot. Anyone help me out? I'll take as many as I can stuff into my backpack.
Mom and Maha gave me a stash last year, but alas it's a bit far to tootle off to (Im not GIJoe!).
Theres a heap on the ground here Nick.
Feijoa wine mate?
I cant help you...might pay to wander up and see sinfull, think he got a few

Had a Feijoa Beer once. I think it was brewed by Mata. Bloody awful. I'll stick to the fruit.

If you want to put feijoas to good use I recommend this good smoothie.
Take about three feijoas and feel the skin off. Put into blender with crushed ice/ or ice cubes. Last add a can of green V then blend away. Enjoy!

YUmmmmmmm!! I LOVE feijoas!! I got so desperate a few weeks ago that I bought some in the supermarket, cost me about $5 for 5!!! They were yum though, but to think we used to grow more than we could eat when I was a kid. Feijoa wine is scrummy, as is feijoa chutney..... but not too much or they'll give you the squirts.

If you get a truck load make jars of Feijoa curd, like lemon curd. Feijoa meringue pie is like angels copulating on the tongue. Aaaaah, I'm off to get some tomorrow. Thanks for the inspiration.

Ahh Feijoa's, fruit of teh gawds!
Other than Feijoa vodka my other fave thing to do with them is this recipe, it's a wonderful rich sort of sweet and sour thing.
PORK WITH FEIJOAS AND GINGER
INGREDIENTS
20g butter
2 pork fillets
100ml ginger wine
6-8 feijoas (about 200g flesh)
100ml cream
salt freshly ground black pepper
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 200C.
Melt the butter in a frying pan. Season the pork and brown on all sides. Remove it to a dish and place in oven to finish cooking - it will take about 10 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fillets. When the pork is cooked, remove it from the oven to a warm place to rest for a few minutes.
Meanwhile, pour off any excess fat from the pan. Pour, in the wine and bring it to the boil, scraping off any browned bits from the bottom of the pan,
Peel and chop the Feijoa's, and add to the pan. Simmer till the liquid has thickened. Stir in the cream and simmer till slightly thickened. Adjust the seasoning to suit.
Slice the pork fillets on the diagonal and arrange on a plate with the sauce poured over them.

You could put out a dishonesty box to help get rid of some. Make it a cheap one though, someone will steal that as well as any fruit and money left.

Well that's 6 Dolmino/Patak's Jars of Joas & 1 jar of Joa Jelly Jam done today:Punk: Bloody Aussie Guava Moth (http://www.mygarden.co.nz/Article/2028/0/New-threats-to-your-garden.aspx) (Coscinoptycha improbana Meyrick (http://www.hortnet.co.nz/publications/pdf/guavamoth.pdf)) has got in to 50% of the fruit though. If ya don't have this pest in ya area, don't take Northland Feijoas down there.Guava moth are a major problem because they infest fruit all year round. Its hosts include yellow guava and feijoa in autumn, citrus (lemon, mandarin, orange, grapefruit) throughout winter/spring, loquats in spring, plums and peaches, nashi pear in summer, and macadamia nuts from summer through early winter.

One thing about feijoas - one tree is enough for the whole neighbourhood. Got 2 buckets from my parents tree yesterday - about the typical daily take.
They have feral feijoas over the back of the farm as well which are falling off the tree.
Apple and feijoa crumble - yumm!
