View Full Version : Are your bike keys on a different keychain?

Are they? Mine are on a separate keychain for 2 reasons:
1. They won't scratch the shit out of the triple clamps (looks like one of the previous owners of my current bikes didn't bother and its caused a few crescent shaped scratches already):
<img src='http://iforce.co.nz/i/3nc3rmeo.jpg'/>
2. In the unlikely event that I lose keys, I won't lose the keys to my motorcycle and house at the same time.
How do you do it?

My bike key is just a key, not on a key-ring. I generally only need my work key, house key, bike key. The other 2 go in my pocket when I'm on my bike.

yep, best to limit the keys on the ring with the bike key. 1, as you point out, damage to the triple clamp, but also, 2, less weight loading the ignition, bouncing around etc. Bike is only accompanied by luggage keys. Rest are on a separate ring.

Plus less weight means better acceleration and fuel economy.

My keyring is one of those with detachable segments. Bike keys are on one segment, so I unclip them and use them, then clip them back when finished. Main bunch goes in pocket. Lots of other keys on the other segments, although I do try to reduce the number: I have common keyed padlocks for various things, so the garage and shed use the same key, for example.
The key slot is on the side of the bike so nothing to scratch down there.
And I do not lose keys, never have. (I do have spare keys at home for everything important, though). I'm sure one day the dementia will catch up, but I'll probably stop riding by then.

Yup. Bike key hangs out alone. Rest of keys go under the pillion seat or in tail bag when I'm out riding

Dude, get a Yoke protector, they make a cool one for our shape which is cheap enough off ebay.
It does fucken suck though, I dunno why the hell people do it. My system below is really efficient and easy enough.
I voted no, as I have one of those little carribinas, and all my keys are hooked onto that. So my house keys have a loop, cages keys the same and my bike a small one and on it's own, which I take off when i'm out on the bike (rest of keys in pocket/plus it means your bike key is always easier to find when not riding), when I get off the bike, quickly clip it back onto the carribina as I grab the keys to unlock the door, easy.

my bike key is on its own for the same reasons as above. Plus im really bad for losing my keys so i have seperate key rings for everthing, car, house and work are all on seperate key rings
so if i lose 1 set i still can get home or into the house.

My bike key is on my whole set of other keys, I have anti-scruff stuff on the triple tree so it doesn't affect it at all.
There was a time when I had everything but my motorcycle key on my keychain, I left my keychain in the topbox and lost all my keys due to an unfortunate wheelie! :(
I use a screwdriver to start mine (or a nail file) and keep either implement in my pocket.

the bike keys [ignition and lock] are together on a mcdonalds toy keyring. its big enough that i can see it easily if its misplaced and soft, so it doesnt scratch. main reason i have it is cos the virago ignition is down the side and i was paranoid about losing the key when riding. the toy means i can feel it easily, and it matches the paint.
my house, mums car and luggage keys are on the same ring together. means i can leave the bike running while getting gloves etc from the top box. they have a "decoration," but i cant remember what it is.

used to just have bike key by itself...........dropped it one day while turning it on for a warrant test, lights, indicators etc.............it vanished down between the tank and steering head and lodged somewhere in the motor under the tank........what a fuckin nightmare gettin it back out............took about an hour,a couple of long tweezer things we made up and a third hand as i needed two bites at it to get it out............now have a plastic sort of tag on bike key...........soft so it wont scratch......big enough so it wont dissappear down cracks etc........and it floats......

Bike key is on rubber thing the bike shop gave me, car key is on it's own key ring and house keys on another. I used to have them altogether but the weight can wreck the ignition....also who want's to lose the whole lot (if you do lose things).
I have spares of all keys hanging in the kitchen and some spare ones hidden outside should I lose keys whilst out and about.
Wouldn't it be nice if we all had one key that opened everything pertaining to us....wierd

All my keys are clipped together when not in use, on a lanyard so they are easy to find, but when unclipped the bike key is on its own with just a blood donor (soft) keyring for company.

I got a leather key wallet made for myself about 5 years ago. It presently holds 1 bike key, 1 house key and 2 work keys. When not in use the other keys are tucked away inside the wallet and the nice soft leather prevents any scratching.

I keep the bundle of keys away from my bike key chain. My bike vibrates and the noise of all those keys jiggling around would piss the life outa me

My bike key is on a removable clip. You get them from M10, and have also seen them as clips on some HD bike jackets. So it stays in the ignition by itself, then joins the other keys when not in use.

What aisle category do they come under at M10?
get a nice little leather case for your keys and no probs. learned the hard way by scratching 1st bike to bits without key cover

I've got one of those small carabiners for all my keys. Just pop the bike key off it when riding.

Bike key seperate with soft rubber tag.
I am dreadful for losing the bike keys at home, so I bought one of those $50 safes from supercheap autos and secured it to the concrete block wall in my bike gear room. All the bike keys go in there when I get into the garage, and the car keys. Always know where the keys are, and relatively secure too.

Where I live they were by the key cutting equipment. I don't know what you would call them though. They appear to be stainless. Come apart to two pieces.

house is combination lock, work is RFID so card in wallet, so that only leaves bike garage key, and plastics FLY logo which seems to protect it alright from scatches. Only problem on mine is someone attacked the triple stem nut with a shifting spanner and scratched the fuck out of everything round it. Ah well, new triples and forks going in it anyways :D

Yep, each vehicle's ignition keys are solo on a rubber or leather fob to help find them. Ditto bike trailer key, 'cos it gets loaned out so is kept separate.
Pannier keys, visor key, house keys, work key, etc all lumped together.

I also keep my keys on a detachable link keychain system so the bike key gets detached and goes in ingnition alone, other keys in pocket... then clipped back on when not riding (I dont have a cage that runs so not many keys to weigh me down lol)
