have a 2007 gsxr1000 special edition. Nice in metallic orange and black with carbon fibre goodies and yoshi 4 into 1 racing exhaust.
Looking at going to a v twin and looking at this rsvr factory 2004 here... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Sports/auction-281296762.htm
Which bike would you rather have?
Bike uses are really just going to work, the occasional spurt, and leisurely paced 2 up riding. Absolutely no track time.
What would you have and which will be worth more in 2 or 3 years time?

stick with the gixxer. that 'prillia sounds like a big hole to pour money into it as and when shit breaks
hmmm on second thoughts.....it is quite nice

The ape has been majorly messed about with, and the gixxer will still eat it up. That, and you're planning on commuting on it, no contest really.

You really can't help yourself can you?
That RSVR looks bloody nice although I'd rather have your gsxr

Heres a couple of pics of my gsxr if it helps visualise and give you an idea of what its like.
I really love the sound of a decent v twin.
And id be imagining the bigger bore would make this thing sound incredible
Note: Bike doesnt look so tidy in the rear since ive had to put on the rear pegs and a pack rack. But still nice.

HAHA snapped ae.
The gixxer is just so responsible and does what it should. And has tremendous power..... but..... doesnt have the nice sound of a v twin.

I'd stick with the Suzi but if the Aprilia was stock or not so modified I wouldn't mind it. Plus you know what you've got with the Suzi as well.

Shit mate. That's a lot of Ape for the money but the Suziki is the safer (more boring?) bet. What a tough decision. A test ride would provide you with more information to help the decision. It could be a barely rideable piece of shit with the mods it has, or an absolutely sublime experience. I certainly enjoy the visceral V2 experience. A 1098 or 1198 would probably be in the same ballpark with fewer unknowns?

I would rather an Inline 4 for commuting. I find the v twin is rough at commuting speeds, and harder to lane split than a 4, you need to ride the clutch more. But you cannot beat the sound of a nice V twin.

Cant really test ride as hes in Auckland and i live down here in Napier. Dont forsee a ride upto auckland any time soon with changing jobs and having a holiday.
Ive looked at some ducati 999's (only decent ducati in my price range) and i myself like the look of them but i dont really like the whole dry clutch sound so thats what steers me towards the rsvr around 04-05 mark. I like the styling and it has the good v twin sound.

Ape.......
Is yours a factory or just an R?
How are they power and handling wise compared to a gsxr like mine?

16th May 2010, 20:45
just an R with ohilins internals and shock... I can't compare the 2 as i don't know the gixxer... but I think the guy who's selling the Ape has just replaced it with the bike you have and prefers the gixxer... http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203457
but he says it smokes an 09 blade too http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=199952&highlight=1060

Very interesting that you picked that up.
Suggests from the horses mouth that my bike has more power and better handling than the ape. But the ape has more character..
Hmm im a sucker for a good sound.
But im also keen on reliability and handling

Spend some money on upgrading your bike? Full ohlins suspension, large speaker with vtwin playlist?

When they're setup for me the Prila is a stunning ride, absolutely sublime for a tall heavy bike (plus heavy pilot) and the Rotax does seem to be bulletproof... it's the electrics that let them down (but you have to be unlucky, similar to other bikes i guess)... been on the aprilia forum for nearly 4 years and you never (hardly ever) hear about any engine failures. In fact I can't think of 1 at the moment... it's usually electrical.

Heads up on the 04 factory....twas a factory recal on the swingarms due to them cracking, most shouldve been done but a mate of mine got one & not long after it cracked as it hadnt the new replacement (at Aprillas cost) Just check with the owner & or look on the 'prilla forums for info on the issue...
Mind you after just looking at it , Id say she'd be sorted......still doesnt hurt to look.

I'd go the 'prila.
I was looking at exactly the same choice last year except 'twas a stock '02 Factory and picked the K7 SE instead. The GSXR had PC111/yoshi/TRE etc and it was a rocket over 10krpm but bland and boring at anything less. If I could have afforded something like that 'prila it would have been a no brainer and I would have snapped it up.
That 'prila looks anything but bland and boring. It mightn't have the outright hp figure to impress your mates at the pub but would have instant stomp anywhere in the rev range unlike the GSXR.
I like the 999's too and as time goes by I reckon they look better and better, but it's gonna be a lil' down on grunt compared to that RSV, and the RSV will be more comfortable. 999s's are good value but I'd want an '05 with the red frame and sexy swing arm which are still a bit over your $15k.
In years to come I know what would be the memorable bike

Spose i could always trade ya the aprillia after a couple of months if its not my cup of tea eh :msn-wink::msn-wink:
Im also a tad worried the rsv will bet a bit of a handfull around town. As the gsxr is just so sedate and rides like a 600 around town.
HMMM interesting the poll is even for gsxr or aprillia..
Its also hard to tell how much the SE is going to hold its value compared to a normal gsxr1000. I believe both the aprillia and gsxr would depreciate about the same from here on out.

not sure about the 1060, but dropping 1 on the front and going 2 up on the rear sprocket helps around town... I added 3 to the rear and that was enough to happily pootle in 1st... just don't crack the throttle thinking you're in 2nd :shifty:

Ducati 848, in white. My absolute dream bike. I'd have that over any Aprilia, MV Augusta/other expensive bike.
Cool thing is, it's a realistic dream too. I could buy a brand new one for $26000, which in the grand scheme of things, really is'nt that big a purchase.......especially when you compare it too an ultimate dream car which is the usual question, which most people will never ever be able to purchase in their lives as they're usually over 500k.

With $26,000 you could buy a 1098 though. Id much rather that, but in the end if i had $26,000 for a bike i wouldnt be spending it all on a bike

with that sort of coin, I'd be getting at least two bikes, one for the daily commute and one for fun at weekends.

the clutch sound you talk about can be sorted really easily..............Dave Cole put new plates in my 916 clutch a while back.........standard plates.........he just stacks them slightly different to factory..........works fine and no horrible rattle...........just the nice thump thump outta the pipes..........

The Karmic/Cosmic thing is... that bike used to live in Napier, so it knows the roads well.
It's not really built for commuting with those mods, but only a ride will tell you how comfortable it really is.
AS far as depreciation it would've been what $27000.00 new and stock, and it's now 6yrs old and had loads spent, time to crack out the calculator.
From what I've read, your sold already. Go take it for a spin. Hell Jason'd probably buzz down to you (?).

Yeah but i'm talking dream bike here. Mine is the 848, not the 1098, as I would'nt be able to ride the thing properly!

I ca'nt afford it. It's about $15000 over budget. If I was buying a new bike however, i'd find the extra 8k or so to get it, but 15k over budget is a bit overkill!
I'm looking at spending around 11k-12k. Much over that and it's getting a bit much really. I have the cash available, and if I wanted to get crazy I could literally purchase it, as long as I was prepared to live without food for a while!
