A 17-year-old motorcyclist was found dead by his father and flatmate after failing to return to his Waikato flat last night.

The teen was last seen by his sister about 8.30pm when he left her Hamilton home.

His father and flatmate went out searching between Hamilton and Morrinsville when the teen failed to return home by 10pm.

They found him in a ditch by a power pole by Holland Rd near Newstead, 6km east of Hamilton, about 12.30am, before calling police.

It appeared the teen failed to negotiate a slight bend, rode onto the shoulder of the road and ended up in the ditch, hitting the pole, police said.

No other vehicles were believed to be involved.

The serious crash unit was investigating.

RIP

RIP Kyle... He loved his bikes and road riding... Still remember when he was too young to ride and he used to be on the back with his old man and giving us the thumbs up as we went past and his excitement at the next stop as he filled us in on our antics...

Taken way to soon :(

Yes, very sad. All of us who are parents dread the day we will get the "knock at the door" while our offspring are out and about, and to be the one to find them would rip your heart out.
I'm sure our parents once felt the same way about us (possibly still do....) and in turn, our children who have kids of their own will face the same possibility one day.

Life is a risk and no matter how much my kids might annoy the daylights out of me from time to time I cherish every moment with them - even at the ages they now are (teenage and early 20s)

I can not imagine anything worse for a parent than to have a child well overdue home, going looking for them, and then making the horrible discovery. I feel for the parents.

RIP Kyle.

I would hate for that knock on the door. I feel for the father who went out to look for his son - sure must've been horrible - I would've done the same myself. My thoughts for the family and friends of Kyle.

Devastating for the family and friends of Kyle, this is any parents worst nightmare - loosing a baby.

Heart felt thoughts to the parents all those directly and indirectly affected.
