I have been commuting between Plimmerton and Wellington for a few years now and never have I seen so many pileups/nose-to-tails on the SH1 as I have seen in recent weeks. There seems to be at least two every week now.

This morning I passed one two car nose-to-tail followed by an (at least) 8 car pile-up a kilometre on. What's up with that?

Simply indicative of driver skill and behaviour. They travel too close and do not pay attention.

Seems to stem from the roads works at Pukerua as the traffic backs up along centennial and suddenly vursts into action til the plimmerton roundabout and then gridlock again... could be wrong though

Pretty poor driving I'd say, but it sure makes getting on the motorway from J'ville/Newlands a lot easier!

It's lucky that NZ doesn't have any form of driver training/testing system in place.
The cornflakes packet provides the driving licence that every kiwi is entitled to.

Might be a symptom of a nice summer followed by a cold spell with a lot of rain. Nice greasy roads?

I'm guessing once the shit all gets washed off the road it might settle down a bit.

seems something is up on our roads at the moment - been a lot of motorcycle deaths lately too.

All the poor fools stuck in the traffic would have got the rage watching you slide on by and 'freckle punched' each other

Declining train service = more people driving now....

True, and the geniuses (genie-i?) are talking about upping the fares. Wtf?

The poor old 'up-at-5.30, nose to the grindstone' worker gets his/her wallet/purse plundered at every corner. No wonder people turn to crime, get frustrated and get pissed, bash their partners/children/head against the wall. It's all bent.

It's a function of traffic density, nothing more.

Accident rise exponentially, we're just getting to the real steep bit of the graph. The solution is more road or less vehicules.

Sigh... Don't get me started.... Trouble is, most get up at 5:30 types are too proud to do crime so they just swallow it down and say nothing (at the moment)... I however get up at 5am so I'm fine.... no really... fine....

Definiteley noticed that trend, leaving at 0600 used to have the highway to myself till about J'ville now, merging in moderate flow from QEII most mornings.

I suspect the people responsible (!) for those crimes have never seen a 0530 wake up.. Except when there's a plod or two doing a raid.

They might turn out that way due to frustration is what I was getting at. But you're right in one respect; crims are very rarely the 5.30am-alarm types.
(Except, perhaps, in Parry:innocent:)
