View Full Version : Conti Attack2 or Pirelli Angels?

I know I know, another tyre thread, but it's better than the ACC complaining etc shit that's up.
I'm getting either of these very shortly. I wanna hear from anyone who's tried both. What do ya reckon about each one? (Do'nt recommend something else, i've got a good price on these so it's one or the other)
I know they're both a good tyre. I'm thinking of just flipping a coin, but surely there's some better opinion than the chance of a coin toss.
Let me know if you've tried them both. I know they're both supposed to be good in the wet, I want to know which has the best dry performance, mainly looking the sports aspect of the sport-touring side of things/best turn in etc. Especially since i'm commuting less and doing more rides in the twisties, sport performance is more important to me now really.
So Pirelli Angels or Conti Attack 2's?

If you know of someone who can do them new for $500 fitted then it's an option.
Eh? No Comprende?
What is it that's hard to understand?

Pilot Road 2. Good luck getting them for $500!!!!!!!
Conti 2 is very new in NZ so probably unproven for how long they will last.
End of the day both are reported as very good tyres - pick the spunkiest tread pattern.

mmm, not really a michelin fan. I must have got a really bad set that sat in the sun for ages or something, because I think i'm the only person the world who does'nt like them. I had Pilot Power 2cts, and had so many slips it really put me off them, I do'nt ride that hard.....

Probably what i'll end up doing. No-one seems to have much to say in regards to comparing the two, so i'll probably go for the Angels as i've never had Pirellis before. Not too fussed on longevity really, more on grip than anything else. I do'nt want to get a purely sports orientated tyre as I still will commute a little on it, and I do ride in the wet too.
I think the Contis have a slightly cooler tread pattern (like that really matters lol) so maybe I go with them.
Fuck it I may just have to flip a coin!

haven't used the conti, but mates have used angels. By all account, having used a lot of tyres, generally, pirelli is expensive but Damn good (using two different pirelli's on my bikes right now). In your position I would take pirelli.
Both the Angel St and Attack 2 are single comound tyres. I run the Michelin Pilot Road 2 (dual compund) on the street, track, gravel, sport touring, commuting and they have been a super amazing tyre for me. You may wanna consider the option.

Good tyres, just not for me, bad experience. Must have been a bad set as they really performed badly
Surely ya not talking about cutting corners on tyre price with the two i'm looking at are ya?! (they're at a good price, not a cheap tyre!)
Which tyres were the experimentals BTW? Were they the "full bore" ones by chance?

I using the Conti Attack 2, very happy with them. I've done 3k and the tyres are still looking very good for wear. Fantastic dry performance and I'm still waiting for the 'big wet' because it's still pretty dry here in Auckland.
what ever your choice of tyre I always go by the motto 'buy the best tyres you can afford'.

Cheers. It's good to see something written about the new contis. I could'nt even find bugger all online. (from real road users/I do'nt care what the experts say in the mags etc I like to know what the average road user thinks)

Yep. Sports touring these are pretty much the best, bearing in mind i'm not into Michys. I just have a good price. I've never bought cheap tyres, in saying that I do'nt cheap out on anything really.

A tyre I have heard good reports on is the Metzeler M3 - been around for a few years now and for a sport orientated tyre by all accounts they last well, particularly on a light bike like your 750. You'll have plenty of stick and people claim they work well in the wet. The more you write I wonder if you should be putting a sticky front on and a sport touring rear .... for hooning you know!
A Conti Sport Attack front, Road Attack rear will give good mileage and the front will be sticky with quick turn-in due to the tyres profile. I ran that combo on a 1200cc bike and I never had any issues at all for my riding speeds (let's say middle of the bunch!), plus rear wear was looking very good when I sold it.

Tyres can be very personal, some love a particular tyre, others hate it. I remember a while ago, there was a tyre Death loved, I hated it. He loved what it did, I felt it made the bike twitchy as all hell. Different bikes will also make a tyre perform differently.
Which tyres were the experimentals BTW? Were they the "full bore" ones by chance?
On my KTM I was running a set of Pirelli Scorpion Sync. Needed another set, couldn't get a single rear in the entire country, so had an offer of a set of BT016 at a great price. Figured, oh what the hell, I'll give them a shot, triple compound on rear etc. Turned out they were terrible for me, ended up putting the bike into a ditch when it low-sided in the wet, with no warning. Needless to say, the repairs comfortably cancelled any savings on the tyres, now I'm obsessed with only running the Syncs on my KTM. Always have a spare set, and when it goes on, another is ordered.
Sold the set of BT016 (with less than a thousand km on them - ie, as soon as the Sync turned up) to a mate, who loved them. :weird:

Yup, two top of the range sports tourers there, and not a huge amount between them from what I hear - much of that being subjective.
Feedback from those who are on the RA2 at the moment is that the front steers extremely well, and VERY sporty, and after 6500 km on a 2009 R1 with a real hard charger aboard the front is less than half worn. The BRM crew did 4500 km in the south island on the 'Busa, and less than half worn.
Other feedback from the riders I have contact with is much the same, and they are comparing to the same sector of tyres that you are.
The RA2 is continuous compound, with means it's hard in the middle, and gets softer towards the outside in a linear fashiom, so you get something a little softer and stickier at the absolute limit, while still getting durability in the centre.
Both are VERY good in the wet, which you would expect given the amount of silica in them - deffinately sports and tourer, but not too sports.
What have you ridden and liked before ?
PS - i won't be voting in your poll for obvious reasons !

Have run the Angels , neutral steering , great wet grip and good life too . RA2s look sportier though and they have "traction skin" so don't need to be scrubbed in ( so they say)

After having had suboptimal experiences with the old Conti Road Attacks (on an ST1300 and on an FJR1300) and the Conti Motions (on my Shiver), I am reluctant to try any other Contis on the basis of "third time lucky".
Having said that, my front Angel is porous, losing pressure at the rate of about 5 psi per day and has done since new. I shall continue to fart around with it until its rear buddy wears out in about 3,000km time. I'm also unsure as to whether the Angel is the perfect tyre for the Shiver but shall reserve judgement on that until I get my suspension upgraded.

Conti 2 - not owned.
Conti - had them and didn't like them. The only tyre that would slip on the front that I've ever owned.
Pirelli's - heard lots of good things and wanted Angels but they didn't arrive in time so went with PR2's. Friends ride Pirelli and they ride quick in the wet. And I mean real wet, long rides.
Mich PR2's - slip a bit which is a bit of a surprise, but then they grab again everytime. Had them let go at well over 100 plus in heavy rain thought it was strange till I looked at the speedo and realised I was going way quicker than I thought. Had them let go a few times last Sunday in the wet. Just not confidence inspiring last Sunday but before that and at speed they're good. The PR2's are also showing uneven wear.
Mich PR's - just really great tyres.
Metzeler - had them and they were crap. (I know, I know - some people love em. I just didn't like the feel, the ability to let go, the wear wasn't good. Overall I'd never touch them again.) And some of my best friends would ride with nothing else.
Angels next time for me.

5k on the Conti 2 now. only now starting to show some wear on the rear tyre, that 'squaring off' of the centre of the tyre that you get. Tread still at 4mm. Got caught in heavy and consistant rain a week ago when I was out of town. tyres felt fine in the wet, no loss of confidence there. Pressures: front-36psi, rear-38psi.

Interested to hear that you went for the 190/50 - that would certainly give you a very stable bike, and one that is easy on the rear tyre - larger zenith area etc.
Keep us all posted on how it steers with the 190/50 on it ? it could turn a little slower . . . . . . . . . .

Bit dissapointed with the wear rate expected more but was about the same as the Conti road Attack I had previously. I wont fit them again instead Ill go back to Mich Pilot road Ct2s better wear rate!

The CR has done about 8k on the Angel (original tyres were Corsa3, fabulous tyre but just could afford them and the Angel was the next one down the scale) and the rear is showing some wear but its been fully used so I am happy with that.

Nicely predictable. Don't forget I'm running a 190/50 rear. I think that this slows down/balances out what would otherwise be a particularly sharp turning front.

Ran Pirelli Angel's previous to the Michelin Power Pure's i'm running now. When they first went on they were lovely, really nice but by the time they were worn out I couldn't wait to get them off, bike was really getting stubborn to corner. Being a sport touring tyre they were also a little slow to turn as well (from new) but is to be expected given the design brief.
Got around 8500km out of the rear and it was shot, front was getting shagged to so they came off at the same time. I had a Michelin Road 2 on the rear once paired with a Pilot Power 2ct on the front which worked reasonably well as a combo on the 14, 9000km out of the Road 2 when I pulled it off bike, I reckon there was probably about 1000-1500 km left in it. I pulled it off coz it was starting to get a little slippery late in it's life but if you don't ride them too hard they would have been fine to wear out completely.
Apparently there is a Road 3 (?) coming out soonish.. Will be giving that a go for sure.

Sounds fair and reasonable to me !
190/50 will also be more durable in the middle with that great big zenith area, so your choice is quite a considered one really.

It will respond a little slower than a 180/55 tho. I found the 190/55 a great balance between contact of 190 and response of the 180. One thing to watch out for though is a 190/55 is a taller tyre, so hugger clearance can be an issue (was for me).

I've got just under 6,000km's on a set of Angels at the moment. Really liked the feel when they first went on but now the rear is not feeling that great - it does not inspire a lot of confidence on rough roads. Feels like it is floating around on me. The front still feels fine.
The rear is also wearing excessively - I've probably only got 2k left in it whereas I can get 12,000km out of PR2's. A mate (on another Connie) has also had an issue with his Angels - he left home with what looked like plenty of tyre for the Four Points but only about 1,400 km in the belts were showing and he had to find a tyre quick - piccy below.
PR2's going back on the Connie - soon...

Not dual compound - they are a linear compound, so the change across the tyre is progressive, with no join , seam, or discernable change.
That's why wear very evenly, and keep their contour.

hmmm just stuck a set of angels on the supermoto... so we'll see how they go.
Right, an update on the Angels on my KTM.
Fitted approx 6500km ago, I just got a hole in the rear this evening, decent sized enough to have to race from gas station to gas station to get it home. I'll get it picked up Monday/Tuesday, let the shop have a look at the puncture and see if its worth saving the tyre.
Wet weather performance has been fantastic, really truly fantastic, dry weather also as good, a very stable tyre with predictable handling and stays at the lean angle you set it at. However, not very good in the gravel, very nervous and the compound appears to be soft enough to get quite pock-marked by the stones. Not a gravel tyre I suppose, but I'll explore on gravel anyway.
Now for the bad side. After 6500 ish, the rear is noticeably wearing flat in the middle, enough to now notice the difference in handling. There is still a few mm of tread, but for a tyre that replaced the Strada, I really was expecting in the vicinity of 10k, but I don't think it will get there. I believe the soft compound could have also been compromised by the gravel, so potentially I have hundreds of slits in the tyre that could turn into punctures :shit:
The Pirelli Scorpion Sync was definitely much better in this department, and despite the damage from gravel, and even a huge bloody nail, I never had one let me down, or need patching (and I've finished 6 sets already).
Due to my requirement to ride dry, wet, sealed or gravel, I don't think I would recommend the tyre for mixed use. Seal only, it may fair better, and with the v-twin thump, I can't imagine the centre of the rear enjoyed the torture.
I wanted to try a set of the new Pirelli Scorpion Trail (replacement for Pirelli Scorpion Sync), but my sizes apparently won't be available until March some time. I might try PR2 (even tho I said I wouldn't, for the KTM - love them on the hornet), but I also have 2 and 2/3 sets of Syncs left so I'll be fine until next year.

I was hoping for the same thing but 10-11k on a Strada (I've had 2 sets) vs 6k on a Angel tells a bit of a sad tale. Also agree re the tyre going off pretty quickly. At about 4,00km the rear was getting quite skittish on rough roads and the handling was definitely not nice. The Connie just chewed the centre out and the profile was gone.

I'm watching this with interest. The rear PR2 on the Hornet is getting lower - still a thou or two of very legal rubber (I tend to replace sooner than later). I've 10,000 out of them so far and I've been extremely happy with them. I should stick another set on (I'll do a pair on this change) but I think I'll try out the new Conti Road2's.
I had a chat to the Christchurch tyre guru on Friday to get a idea of what is good and what they cost.
Good news, and never a truer word spoken regarding the current 'sport-touring' tyres 'if you need more tyre you should be on the track'.
I was considering some super sticky sport tyres as I don't do huge kms per year but with a set of hoops in the $600 mark now I'll stay with sport-touring for the kms.
Presently I'm leaning towards trying the Conti Road2's (be a good comparo with the PR2).
Time to start saving - dam shame they don't have Boxing day sales on motorcycle tyres!
Actually the friggen things should be a lot cheaper as the NZ dollar has been very good against the US for a long time now.

Spoken to a mate who has an 08 cbr600 with Angels, and he's finished a rear tyre. Front is still fitted, rear has been replaced. He estimates he did about 8000km on the set, little bit of harder riding and 2up. Front is over half worn.
His opinion is that its a sports tyre, not sports touring.
If a 600 can't get 10k from the tyre, I don't think there is much hope for the rest of us

An update. It turns out the hole was actually a slit in the tyre, something sharp had cut it, and on the inside, the slit was 11mm, so beyond their limit of 8mm for a safe repair.
Aka, one finished tyre. Tyre was still good for more km, just pockmarked after 6500km ish, but obviously was done. I've kept the front to flog off used for a few dollars, to pay for the PR2 set that just gone on the bike.
Won't be using the Angels on the KTM again, as I don't think they're good enough for mixed use. I'll be able to report on road use only early in the New Year. :devil2:

Just hit 4k on my Conti Road 2's on the Super Duke, including shitloads of SH2 commuting in Hutt (long, flat, stratight, yawn......)
Wearing quite nicely, get good and sticky once warm, and judging by my chicken strips I am braver on these than I was on the Diablo's (doesnt feel like I have to try either)
Will let you know how they look at 8k

I've been running Conti Attack 2's this year, and they are great. Feel confident in the rain, on the road, and the track.
 this one has my vote

for what its worth, I've extracted 15,000kms out of my rear Angel ST on my 750. it probably won't get a WOF but I'll drag another 1000-2000kms out of it before I get rid of it. Interesting to see how much worse the wear is for the heavier bikes or even guys with similar bikes but maybe different pressures (FWIW i use 36). Front went on 1000kms later and has plenty of life left. haven't spotted any sign of it wearing unevenly across the tread either.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with them over the old Stradas. As with all Pirellis I've used, the feedback is just excellent. I didn't think i'd get that much wear given that my daily ride is 70kms on the motorway and 20kms on a fairly tight rural road with a semi-martian surface in places- not to mention a rough gravel drive that cuts it up a bit.
my only niggle is that I don't think i get quite the same confidence when lent right over as the stradas going for the knee down- although that could be a number of things such as a horror story i heard about a front sliding out without warning:shit:

Mine lasted about 7000km with mild flat spot on the rear tyre, they started out riding real nice but rapidly evolved into mediocrity followed by decending into being really shit for the last couple of thousand k's of their life. I could not be less interested in getting another pair.
That said it's nice you've had a good run out of them but you'd be one of the few i've talked to that's had a set that had much decent to say about them.
