On Wednesday of last week I attended a local children’s hospice/recovery centre where I cook for everyone once a month. I befriended a couple of twins who took great delight in helping me cook up a meal of Enchilada's, corn bread etc. Great fun.

Halfway through cooking the kids mother turned up and she kept repeating, "We always have this". Then after saying this time and time again she asked me what I was cooking (!). "It's a Mexican themed meal", I replied. "Oh, I thought it was", replied the lady. "I can tell from your accent and the way you look".

Now those of you that have met me, will no doubt agree, I neither look Mexican or have a Mexican accent. Welsh – yes. South American – no.

On Friday I hosted a delegation from Asia. The meetings went well and after we wrapped up and walked outside the cameras came out, and three or four of the guys from the delegation walked up to me, one at a time, and squeezed my arm, and began mumbling in their native tongues to one another looking me up and down.

The guys then asked the interpreter something and she turned to me and said, " These gentlemen want to have their photo's taken with you, because they think you are a very handsome movie star".

It's a funny ole world.......

Y'know, many Asian languages are full of double meanings. For example, 'Mother' sounding almost exactly like 'Horse' in Chinese. Or 'Handsome Movie Star'..... well. I'll let everyone's imagination run on...

nice yarn - Book by it's cover etc.

'Funny old world' indeed.

Reminds me of....
i'm in Dunedin on a pissing down rain tuesday afternoon when doing the last tour of the South island. Hunkered down in the hotel over the casino.
'I need some new music' says I, so co-pilot and i locate large music shop just up the road.
Select half a dozen discs between us and turn to the counter where a very elegant looking 'Chinese' girl with the embroidered gold dragons on the full length silk dress, is sitting in front of a selection of paper umbrellas festooned with sampan and rice paddy motifs.
'Ah - communication challenge?' I think to myself as I approach, thinking I hadn't seen a more Chinese ensemble this side of Kowloon and Wan Chai and the irony of encountering it next door to the Scottish shop.

'Funny ol' day innit?' she exclaims in an southern lilt as broad as the barmaid's on the speights ad.

Deceptive? - bugger me.

==========

Nice work on the community help - I helped out/ran my local YMCA for many years back home and got nothing but good from it.

Back when I wore black leather and had a pony tail and grey beard....and rode a noisy black bike, people used to ask me - ''Did you used to be a bikie?''

Ah,I could spin some bullshit on that one!

(There will be singin' in da valley tonight boyos)

ps - I did a job in Malaysia once. After staying at the hotel for about 4 months they took a liking to me (no really) and when it was time to go home, the shouted me a ride in the hotel limo (Merc) with driver etc. I didn't know it but my diabetes had kicked in so I was pretty gaunt and had a ponytail then too. I got my picture taken getting out of the car in my suit (company policy was to travel in meeting clothes) as they thought I was a rock star... These days I'm more a small galaxy than a mere star of course but it was pretty funny...
