View Full Version : Overload the ignition?
Hey,
Getting the bike back this week and was going to ad all the stuff I bought for it on, and realised that I might be hurting the ignition by doing so, what I do is be lazy and load all the parts off the alarms imobilisor relay, so it will be running alarm/grips/radar/bike ignition, will this put an emense strain on the ignition and should I look at building a relay so I run everything off the battery directly but activated by the relay?...
Or should this be ok? :drinknsin
Thanks.

Erm a bit more detail methinks, like what sort of bike and what are you adding?
Generally a good idea to run power hungry add on's off a relay anyway. Don't use the ignitions one. I'll bet there is a spare terminal on the power / fuse box?

The other consideration is the power output of the alternator - you need to add up all the things likely to be running at the same time, and if that is too close to the alternator output, your battery's going to run flat.
Here's a pic of john on his bike here.... :killingme
Shh dont share those sorts of details ;).
Yea sorry about that, I have a 92 ZXR250.
Using this formula W/V = A it works out to have about 34amps? thats assuming that the measurement of watts is taken directly from the alternator..
My heated grips state 1amp maximum draw, .8amps normal, radar is (edit) 80ma and the alarm is directly powered off the battery, and uses a relay to send a 12v+ down the ignition.
I supose it would be better to do a relay option in any case..?

2 amps for the radar?
Wowsers...

err make that 80ma :brick:
Damn stupid me, just had it running off a very strong power supply - still works though :Punk:

If yer only drawing 1 and a bit amps, you'll be sweet as is :niceone:

Cool, saves having to do to much work.. thanks.

I wouldn't run accessories off the alarm relays. Use a separate relay for the grips, the detector can run off any switched 12v supply.

Thanks for that I will have a look at it this weekend :)

heated grips alarm and radar sounds like you r going to be warm at speeds faster than a radar can pick you at :killingme :killingme :killingme
