noticed this when I got home today, looks like someone has had a go at my rear tyre, unless there is something else that may cause this sort of thing? though as its across the whole tyre and a pretty clean cut I can't think of anything  also doesn't look like it happened all that recently (though I did pull a nail out of it a few weeks ago).
Obviously its time for a new tyre anyway, but want to avoid such shit happening to my new one.

it just looks like you have ridden over something with a sharp edge, anybody with half a brain would slash a tyre through the side wall.

Yeah - what he said - not malicious - a little metal or glass on the road probably

That is the point that the manufacturerer joined, spliced, the tread together. It is quite a common sight on worn tyres. I have seen it on reasonably new tyres too, but not often. It seems to be more apparent on cheaper tyres, than the more expensive ones.
I wouldn't worry about it, the tyre looks like it will wear out before the splice gives away.

that was my first thought, but it goes too far up the edges for that i reckon

ah yup, is a pirelli sport demon so wouldn't class that as cheap, but it is at the end of its lifetime.
either case, sounds like no need to worry bout it then
I have seen something similar on here before, I believe then it was put down to where the tread is joined on the tyre?

The tyre factorys have chosen you as their secret test pilot, best spend 1/2 hour before each ride checking tyres to see what thay have done

I have seen similar with my tyres in the past & had no dramas, funnily enough first time I noticed was on sport demons. My mate had a real puzzler recently, we got back from a ride & checked the tyre's (as you do) & he had a shallow slash right around the front & rear tyres, just off centre. Looked like he had ridden along a stanley knife.

End of life for it.
