Just seen on tv1 news, the mother of one of the survivors of a fatal up north says "the road is dangerous". This followed the reporter stating that speeds of over 100kph were being done in the 50 - 70 kph zone.

Um, is there something wrong with my interpretation of her statement? How can a road be "dangerous" when there is a speed restriction on it but it's blatantly ignored?

When parents come out with comments like that it really makes me wonder what hope there is for their kids and other victims who happen to be in their way.

Umm... what do you expect? Do you really think that straight away they would be saying that it's their kids fault they are dead? They are trying to deal with the situation and come to terms with their loss, the last thing on their mind is vilifying their on children.

I don't disagree with the fact that it was the drivers fault, not the road, but you can't expect a person in that state of mind to think 100% rationally and logically. They are trying to preserve their memory of their child, not blame them for being dead.

Yep, a road by itself is not dangerous. After all it is an inanimate object. But put a human on there who challenges the conditions, their vehicle and their own skill level and dangerous conditions are created.
Merely exceeding the posted speed limit in itself does not necessarily make the road "dangerous". Conversely, travelling at or below the posted speed limit doesn't necessarily make a "dangerous" road safe.

The comment that got me was the kids come round that corner too fast and lose control...blah...blah...something has got to be done about it. That was towards the Road is dangerous slant too not the kids are speeding slant. Unreal! We both reacted the same way at the same time here :D

I think, judging by the roads conditions, that upon entry of the corner, they had already sustained loss of traction seconds prior.

Youngster decided outside ours was a good place to try that on Friday. Think he about shit. I know we did, I seriously thought he was going to roll into the big tree opposite us. All to impress someone he knew that was parked just up the road. What a winner.

One guide I've heard is that double the recommended corner speed is doing well, triple is when you're really going for it.

I was watching that item ... male witness reckoned they were doing 120kph and I remarked to Mrs Oakie "and I bet someone blames the road". Sure enough, that happened about 5 seconds later... As Mr Hitcher would say 'Gahh, thud".

MamaJo's 2 boys were in a car with their mate and they crashed in very nearly exactly the same spot but going in the opposite direction. They were airborne till they hit the river bank on the opposite side and had their seatbelts on. Multiple cuts and horrific bruising. The young drivers dad bought him a mazbox fordium turbo and he had owned it for 4 hrs. They are lucky to be alive and they know it. The road is awesomw . It is a 4 lane smooth blacktop with very gentle sweeping corners. The corner they went around you could easily drive round at 120kph in ANY car. So anybodys guess how fast they were going. Sad but that is what young-uns do. I remember.............................

Well F-up up the bum I agree with Steve.

I've been riding motorcycles for 30 years next February. I ride the same roads I was riding 30 years ago on bikes nowhere near as capable as my current. I am often amazed that I survived when I recall areas that my riding buddies and I used to pass cars around the local hills - areas I'd never consider passing on nowadays on a infinitely faster and more capable bike.

Driver and rider training and education is severely lacking in NZ. It also amazes me that after almost 30 years of riding and driving I have NEVER been required to do any form of refresher course. Bloody stupid IMO.

I had the same thoughts seeing the item. Of course their kids are never boyracers, they're just normal kids doing what normal kids do. It's always the roads fault or the gubmints fault...never the kids.
