I need ideas for fixing hole in colour steel roof?

ok i have a hole in my roof about big enough to put my little finger in...
its caused by a copper down pipe from main roof sitting on the the lower roof, i have fixed that problem but i am left with a roof that I am fuesing is colour steel and it dosent look like its worth replacing the whole sheet as its perfect besids the damn hole !!!

what is the best, easiest and neatest way to fix it ?

Is there some heavy duty stick on stuff ? like a patch ?
fiberglass but it sounds messy ?
any other ideas for a good fix ?

More perminant... use sikaflex and a small piece of Iron the same profile...

Clean both surfaces well with sand paper...dry and stick the patch on with a good dob of sikaflex.

Then paint to prevent rust.

Sikaflex would work on its own as well.

never trust silicon. It will break down and will leak again. put a patch on. or even better. put a big piece in that goes up under the flashing and just below the screw line below the hole. or best is to replace the sheet.

Leaks that are small are hard to find and can cause alot of damage over time. Not something to mess with really

Put hair around the hole and call whitetrash, he would into that


A Patch of the same profile some 200mm bigger than the hole, rivet it on use a high quality sealant under it also.

or a bolt with two panel washers...one on top and one underneath the roof iron and some sealant would be a quick fix now the rain is coming.... A proper patch sealed and riveted on is the best bet though. Get a good quality (industrial grade) roof sealant.

If you are riveting a patch on....make sure you get blind rivets that are sealed. The aluminium outer will completely encase the head of the rivet shank. Normal pop rivets the centre can drop out, leaving a wee hole. :-)

Try Mitre 10. Had several rusty holes in our roof and they had rolls of stuff that looked like silver foil with a tar backing. Unfortunately cant remember the name but it works great and you can paint it if you want.

Be careful that whatever you use can be checked easily if there is a further problem. The silver tape is to be avoided for this reason. I recently looked at a job to find and repair a leak where the people had used massive amounts of this very tape over approx a 10m section and it was impossible to fix. The riveted patch with proper roofing silicon is best esp if you can tuck top edge under flashing.

Thanks everyone I would love to use a large patch of tin... its colour steel (grey olive green) and I do not want to spend big bucks on a whole sheet for such a small hole when I only need piece about 500x500mm ..... at least the whole is on top of the ridge and its taped for now but it wont hold for long....

Mate, go to your local roofing supplier and get a colour brochure. It will be a std colour no doubt. Then ask them for an off cut. They will have a bin full. If you act like a hoary old builder they will give it to you just to get rid of you! DAMHIK

Just a point....Sikaflex is not silicon...is more of a mastic sealer....really good shite

duct tape and paint to match.....not a permanent repair.Be careful with different materials,make sure they are compatible with your roof

Ha ha ha....... Don't use duct tape. Use the sikaflex or a quality silicione. I've got siliconed nail holes on my colour steel roof and it's been fine for 10 years so far.
