Anyone shipped a bike to NZ as 'parts'?

Further to my previous post about shipping bikes from the UK ('Worried Pom'), I have been quoted £1200 per bike with all the paperwork, crate etc. I'll bite the bullet for my 500 Matchless but this price is more than the value of the other bikes I want to bring in, a Yamaha IT465J I bought new in 1982, and the XR600 Honda I rode round NZ and then shipped to UK (£250 plus $20 dollars for the metal crate from Red Baron!).

Could the XR could have it's NZ registration activated when in Auckland, even after 11 years? I gather that road registering the IT would be difficult due to its antisocial nature, and it is presently being rebuilt anyway, so I have a plan about getting it sorted, then stripping it down again to pack in tea chests as 'parts'. The frame size would be a problem for crating, but I could bring it on the flight, as it is the same weight/size as a mountain bike. If this was a possibility, I could do the same with the XR. Anyone got any ideas, opinions or experience about this? Thanks in advance, Rob

If a bike has been re-registered it is like it has never been registered. So having a bike that was registered 11 years ago will be no help.

Could be a cheaper option ! think there's one on it's way over soon (not sure if from UK or US)

You'd have to check whether the XR was still on file. Any bike coming into the counttry for the first time will need papers or you will have virtually no way of registering it. I needed rego docs from Auss when I imported my bike. The IT -why on earth would you register that? parts in shipment might be best way.

only if you had been putting the registration on hold annually (which I doubt).Therefore It would have to be registered as a new import, probably re-vinned etc. Not sure on costs to do this.

IT's were road registerable when new - my IT400 was, anyway. Yamaha NZ even got a special exemption for not requiring indicators. However that was then and this is now. If never registered before, or if re-registering after previous rego has expired it has to meet the standards for a new (2010) bike. You'd probably spend more on getting the 465 to registerable standard than you would buying a car and trailer and using that to take it to off road riding areas
