I think what he was meaning was;
Telecom had the monopoly on the fixed lines so could charge what they wanted, and did fuck all to up grade.
No other telco wanted to build there own network or help with the up grade costs so cryed about the monopoly to the goverment.
goverment gives in and tells telecom to unbudle their lines.
Why would any company want up upgrade there lines if another company can just walk in and take it.
What should have been done was the goverment should have brought the lines back off telecom and then charged everone the same.

Nope - you misunderstand me... ANY of these other companies can go put in equipment anywhere but they don't because there is no profit in it. Telecom has exactly the same problems and yet they still try and connect people eventually. Dont get me wrong - I really don't like them as a company, they have done some daft things but they get hammered unfairly.

If there is no room in the exchange - again bullshit. I guess that there is probably not an exchange in the country I've not worked in and guess what, apart from a few select places there is NO equipment from telecoms competitors. Why? Because they care even less about connecting you!

There are just so many lies and misconceptions about how the networks function in this country - why would you think I wouldnt know the facts when I've built half of it (20 years ago and guess what it's still running the guts of it)

We live in the country and we've had broadband with telecom for years. What part of Franklin are you in?

Its more complicated than pure geography. It more depends upon what cable goes past your house and which way it goes.

Say a small RLU building exists near you or even a DSL capable cabinet? There may be a DSL or similar rack in the connection point but if its full and another rack is required - what do you think that costs to equip? Minimum maybe $250,000 installed cost - for what? 1 new customer paying $60 a month? No one in their right mind with responsibilities to their shareholders would do that.

Now - factor in the govt talking up their ultra fast fibre network... Why would you put in equipment that might need a 5 to 10 year payback when the govt could render it all useless overnight?

For that matter why is the govt even getting involved? They sold telecom and opened up the market to these very market forces condemning 1,000's of highly qualified staff to joblessness and despair. (not me - I resigned yonks ago)

We are reaping what we sowed all those years back.

So it looks like I am stuck with dial-up.

A DLM is just that - a digital line module hooked up to a NEC NEAX 61E exchange. It is used to extend a 2M/B connection out to a MUX closer to the customer where it is converted back to an analogue (copper) voice line. A normal line module is the analogue to digital conversion point inside the exchange.

How slingshot is using that DLM to connect to you god only knows BUT it sounds like slingshot is not actually installing anything out in the field, they are relying on Telecom to have spare capacity they can resell. I can just about promise that there are no faults in that equipment because that would affect 32 customers, really, there is most likely not enough capacity on either slingshots gear (if it even exists) to connect you OR the cabinet nearest you has no spare DSL capacity. If you are the only waiter on that connection point - be prepared for a long wait 'cost the gear is eyewateringly expensive. (Telecoms supplier, alcatel lucent is not one of the more affordable suppliers and yes - they are the same people who built the XT network)

Phone telecom (don't tell them the problems) and see if they can connect you, if not they will tell you why, if they can you can go back to slingshot and let them know it can be done.

I got a T stick a couple of months ago and it works fine. Can't get broadband where i am either so this is the next best thing. Can be a little expensive if ya let the kids use it all day, but otherwise it's fine. Just buy phone cards each time you want a top up. $30 minimum to start the month and that gives you 500mb. not brilliant but it's ok. Speed is good too.
