View Full Version : I met a nice cop...

Had a nasty nose to tail crash in the car on the motorway on Wednesday...... wrote my car off - smashed it up big time.
The cops came, and the one dealing with me was lovely - the first thing he said was "you must be gutted, this was a really nice car!" Between my bawling and sniffing and swear words, he was really kind and reassuring, I thought I would be in trouble for failing to stop, but he said he doubts there will be a fine.
He was really cool, even asked the towies which guy was coming as my neighbour is a towie, and he knew I wanted that guy to take me home.
Anyway, I know I had a big moan way back about cops, but I stand corrected, they are pretty cool when you are hurt and upset.

Yep, just like all other people, you get nice guys and bad guys, and yes the attitude reflects the situation. Just like the rest of us.

I agree! When I crashed on the 12th breaking my back, the Police were as gentle and kind as the Ambo's!

Its good to hear your getting better Ed.
Like a lot of people on here most only deal with the police when they get a ticket, call them every name under the sun then go crying to them when they have a little booboo.
Good on you kitty for have the grace to post this on here, there are not that many that would do the same.

Yup! When I got to hospital and was in RESUS, the lady officer even apologised for having to take a blood sample! I told her she didn't need to apologise and to go ahead, she was only doing what she had to do.

Maybe a red blotchy face with swollen eyes and a sniffy nose does it for him?
Nah, he had just smashed his beloved race car the weekend before and knew how gutted I felt.

I read it here in a post somewhere - the waving in a circle over your head thing - like a siren going round - he was warning me of a cop ahead (of me) - was actually 3 cops and a broken down truck on a sharp bend up a steep hill

Crap. I thought that meant 'do a u-turn and follow me, I'm going to the nearest pub'.
No wonder I'm rarely ever home.

with the weird crying/ gasping noises in between

I hate to be a party pooper, but it's still possible you will get a ticket (despite being a girl, and being upset and all). My niece rolled her car, and the attending cop was someone she went to school with. Several weeks later she received a ticket in the mail for careless use of a motor vehicle. It's pretty much standard in a single-vehicle crash, as is being ticketed for nose-to-tail accidents (failing to stop within half the visible distance?)
However (but!) in many/most cases it's easy enough to be discharged without conviction. Hopefully that will be the case this time, or not being ticketed at all.

Yep, I've seen this done a few times by different riders, seems to be a common signal, although I had no idea what it meant the first time I saw it. The flashing red and blue lights behind me about 20 seconds later kinda gave it away though. Didn't get ticketed, the cop told me they were randomly checking that riders on bikes over 250cc had full licenses.

Might be a BS reason from the cops but that what's happened. I was behaving like a responsible road user. They had no reason to pull me over at all but that 'random check' was what they said. At the time I could see about 50m further along on the same stretch of road where another rider had been pulled over too. When I rode past him after the cop sent me on my way, the poor bugger was being ticketed and did not look happy at all. This was on the southern side of the Akld harbour bridge, before the Fanshawe St exit, about 2 yrs ago.

Police can, and do, stop any vehicle at random.
No reason whatsoever is required.

Even each other!! A few have been pulled over by their own and good job too. No one is above the law. I am glad they are out there doing their job. It would be a lot less safe out there without them.... sadly not all muppets live of Sesame Street.

Your knowledge of the law is well reflected by your grammar and spelling however, so should warn any intelligent person away.

Lol. Two years ago!? Holy shit let it go! hahahaha. No need for a B/S reason, chances are they were just doing a random check.

I am half expecting to get a ticket as it was my fault. I am hoping that is all though - a $150 ticket.

Too right, all I meant was that I wasn't doing anything obviously stupid that would attracted unwanted police attention so I thought it was BS when they flashed the lights to pull me over before I knew why. I've certainly had a few conversations with police on the motorway before and after that one. However in 18 years of riding I've never had a problem with police being anything other than professional, occasionally very understanding, and better yet, sometimes very lenient.
I was merely pointing out the situation in which I first encountered the cops siren/lights circling hand signal, followed closely by the cops pulling me over.

There bloody well should have been a fine.
You just smashed up someone else's pride and joy - considering your car was written off, I'm assuming the damage to theirs must have been similar. What if it had been a motorcyclist in front of you?
Just because someone has tits and is in tears is not a reason for selective application of the law.
Edit: Good to see your post a couple above this one acknowledging this.

So far, the Police have rung me to ask my recollections of the accident and my account fitted with what they already knew. I'm hoping I'll be let off any charge due to not driving in any way that could be considered careless. My van was up to scratch, just got a WoF, Reg and Road User all up to date and I was doing about 45km/h. The attending Police opined there was oil on the road and thereafter I was pretty much a passenger. I was grateful I was able to avoid a head-on by overcorrecting and spinning the opposite way, but beyond that I had no control.
They will look at all the facts before deciding whether to lay a charge and you'll just have to wait and see, I'm afraid.

I am not for one minute thinking that I should get off this because I was upset. I know I screwed up. I know I damaged their car - I feel bad about this.
I know the people I hit - they are patients of the dental surgery where I work, we also have friends in common. They were really nice when they had every right to be angry.
I have imagined what it could have been like for a motorcycle rider - I am not stupid, I just did a stupid thing.
I am not of the opinion that because I am a woman I should be able to cry and get off.
I am aware that like me, these people are without their car, and all the inconvenience that comes with it.
I wish more than anything this had not happened, I am not enjoying the injuries, the financial cost and emotional cost - I doubt the people I hit are happy either.

Ugh, listen to me, still angry about being a dick and crashing my car, I am so lucky that no one hit me in the arse as there would have been serious injuries
If someone hit the bull bar at the back of the ute, they would not have walked away.
And thank god there were no bikers around as the barrier was that cheese cutter crap. I pointed that out to the cop, got no response though.
