Right - never ridden in snow before. Any tricks to staying upright?

There shouldn't be snow at the site, however if there is I doubt there will be much left in the afternoon. Easiest thing to do is treat it like going across mud and keep the bike in the low rev's to get better forward traction. No sudden movements, and always look forwards. If possible, follow someone else so you have a bit of warning when something tricky is comming.

I had lots of fun getting the ZX10 to this point.

The weather forecast is currently a little shaky for Friday, but Saturday and Sunday look like they might be pretty nice.

Oh well, if I wear the wet weather gear on the ride down then that will be a little less to pack.

Jeezuz, you can READ those things? I wouldn't want to look at one pissed, it was confusing enough sober. I'll rely on your ongoing interpretations ScootMan!

Right - never ridden in snow before. Any tricks to staying upright? Don't even worry about it on the road, There will be plenty of traffic on the roads to sweep it to one side and simply add to the scenery and on the track on the way in there will have been plenty of traffic and should be a clear path. If you do strike fresh snow on the track going in it can make it hard to see hidden stones etc underneath which will add to the nerves, try and keep ya feet up and if nervous follow someone. The reality is I find it easier to ride on snow as its not as slushy as water and mud, but it all depends on the depth of course The track is to a quarry and as such in pretty good order and has been recently serviced.
You'll be right
Don't forget to pack a carrot to make a snowman with and remember the easiest way to tell the difference between a Snow-man and a Snow-woman is Snowballs...

:shifty: make sure engin is on & in gear, :innocent: but mostly travel at a speed you feel good with, riding in snow is not that hard avoid heavy breaking, slow down earlier & use gears other than that just have fun :Punk:

I have a mate who has pulled out on me from this years cold kiwi. So i have avaliable 1x prepaid ticket if any one is interested. I am after $35 which is the cost of prepays this year. I will be there around lunchtime on friday and the buyer would need to meet me at the gate to claim it, as this year they do not send them out. You just collect the ticket and badge at the gate. Let me know if anyone is interested and we can work out rest of details from there.

Well ya might need a local to follow as the roads up here are very tricky to follow, sh*t load of cops and dumb ass cages everywhere, then loads of towns, then road works, and roads that NEED road works. If ya get past all that then you had a good local so you might make the site. (if he does not get lost trying to show you all the back roads as these are the best):shit::shutup::yes:

Oh Sels..... thats just teasing. And I have been practising my singing all week. I'm riding to the Kiwi on Friday, so can't come party with all you party people - we could have done a duet! Hehe - one day, I'll get back out there - i LOVE that place.

Shame you won't be coming along this year, was looking forward to catching up. Hopefully I get to meet your 3 lovely friends from the south up at the site? You can't miss me - I'm short, far too small for my bike, and hardly ever stop giggling!

Have a great night tomorrow night - shame I'm going to miss it.

Agreed - how to try and fit that extra jacket in the bag now? Its seems its come down to the option of either wet weathers, or the extra warmth. And Yay for bungys and drybags indeed, I have a new found respect for them :)

It isn't called the warm kiwi! Regardless of the forecast or weather tomorrow morning I'll be as geared up as I can and use the rain cover on my tail bag - better to be warm and dry for me and my gear than not to be.

Metvuw forecast: http://metvuw.com/forecast/forecast.php?type=rain&region=nz&noofdays=all still looking OK - maybe not for Friday, but Saturday and Sunday are showing as good - we can only hope that they are correct. It will be a good weekend regardless.

I believe that Carver got 2nd in the Slow Ride last year.

He's a Kiwi Biker and as we all know KB riders are slow.
At the rate he was riding he would have been on the course for an hour if he wanted to.
No one else was close but then nobody else was on a trials bike either.
If he didn't win it would only have been because he thought he had an unfair advantage.

I believe the slow race was judged on merit (not just who was slowest) and the guy that won went really slow on a really big & heavy bike (Maybe a Harley Electroglide or something similar (I'm not too sure exactly what it was)) and it probably wasn't unfair to judge him as the rider that did the best job of it. Like you say Carver was the only one on a trials bike, therefore his going slowest wasn't as huge an achievement.

Have a great night tomorrow night - shame I'm going to miss it.

the "three lovely friends" are on the way, you won't be able to miss them either, just look for the hammock hanging from the tree and take good care of "the green one" please

Mate sorry we didn't catch up! We saw MarkH a few times, Held the bar up in the main tent friday night next to the heater after the wind started up and the bonfire wasn't warm anymore...thought might see you go past. We had tents at bottom of hill climb next to the little yellow trike, there was a camo houchy over back of mates tent to keep the worst off. Heard you were somewhere past the snow sculpture, had a wander over there on saturday morning but didn't see you.

We decided saturday afternoon was to good to waste riding and went when the weine snatch was starting.

Throughly wicked time.

Xgnr and I left dorks at mid day and got to site at 4:30 to set up next to Stu's knob in the normal location. Met Shafty and Mark and just as I unpacked the tent from the mule it started to rain, lots of, big cold stuff!

I got out my trusty Warehouse yellow rain coat and it was all good. By the time the tent was up and gear stowed it was way past time for a beer, so we did.

It was windy and cold till about 8pm, when the snow started. Overall there was at least 4 inches. Various meeting of lots of peeps, lots of drinking ended opening a nice bottle of cheap port. Xgnrs fav!

Sat morning was a stunner, snow everywhere and not much wind. I got out the deck charis and we just soaked up the sun and stupidity.

A new mate from dorks turned up on Sat arvo wth a couple of his mates (CK virgins) and they had a ball. This morning they were very sad boys!

What a great weekend. My first CK and certainally not the last.

I probably met some of you, but i dont know. We were stoaking the fire that used to be a household Yunka fireplace.

The snow was excellent, I dont think it was all that cold all weekend really, but i guess, alcohol has been known to leave me wrong before.

Cold Kiwi 2010.... what a blast.
Got a tat wet on the way down, water finally soaked through the crotch of my "waterproof" trousers at national park and with the chill factor it felt like my body was trying to subject me to a gender change. I briefly wondered why I was doing this with what I knew of the forecast but I have been tramping often enough to know that a really grotty days tramping makes for the greatest time with friends that have been though it with you. We had a little group of 5 riders going from Hamilton.
This was my 4th Cold Kiwi and the forth trip down there on my trusty old 1984 Yamaha XJ550. There were times when it went faster with less throttle in 5th that in 6th with the wind (and my 97kg) but it made is with no hiccups this time (thanks again to the guys that helped sort out the charging issue last year)
Friday was rather wet but it was fine enough for us to get tents and shelters setup in the dry.
But for all you nancys out there that wimped out because of a little rain..... You missed the best dam weather at a Cold Kiwi in 20 years.
At around 10:30pm on Friday night it started to hail. After a short time the sound of the hail stopped but stuff was still falling. It was Snowing! It snowed on and off till around 1:30 in the morning. Quite hard at times. The kids made snow men, snow angels and threw snowballs. Some of the kids might have been a little under 50 years old but not all.
Some dome tents collapsed under the weight of snow. If your tent was one that suddenly started shaking for a few moments after midnight..... your welcome. We went around several tents and shook the snow off to stop them collapsing (or to un-flatten them).
The Next morning there was around 4 inches (100mm) of snow on the ground and the morning was bright with blue skys. Spontaneous snow ball fights broke out between complete strangers and some used inflatable chairs to toboggan down the slopes.
The Snow did cause a few problems for some bikes, especially ones with very wide rear tires. Unfortunately several nice bikes were ungraciously laid down in the snow.
On Saturday night I got to test out a little home made black power rocket. The still cold mountain air made for a perfect flight that could be seen from most of the site. (just don't tell them it was me .... gray area of law but if you videoed it pm me)
The ride back on Sunday was started with a little drizzle before national park followed by mild weather and very pleasant riding.
This year I managed to stay shiny side up and had a fantastic time.
Cold Kiwi 2010 will go down as one of the most memorable Cold Kiwis. So to those that wimped out.... thanks for leaving us clear areas of snow to play in. And to the lass that smacked me with the ruddy great snow ball by the main tent...... good shot.

Well - what can I say?

I will post up a blog soon of my first cold kiwi experience with photos and my story. But to sum it up - I have had the best weekend EVER! What a blast. Turned up on Friday not knowing many folk, and have left knowing many new friends.

Can't wipe the silly grin from my face. Went to bed at 4am aturday morning, got up at 5.30am, and didn't sleep for more than an hour last night. Feeling rather shady, but I'm a happy shady lady.

Thanks to all that I met for being friendly and having a laugh. And I'm incredibly thrilled about the snow, yes the tent collasped so stayed up by the fire most of the night.

:) What a buzz, what a thrill, what a fantastic experience I had.

Look to Cheshire Cat/Alexis for the thrower...

One thing I did right was follow Bruce's ZX14 and his Speed Triple posse through Vinegar Hill, amazingly fun riders even with Triumph parts flying off bikes... one thing I did wrong was NOT follow Bruce and his Speed Triple clan out the back way to Feilding... I went down the big hill and got stopped by a VERY friendly cop interested in the dB level of the LOR exhaust I was running. He could hear all 6 bikes hammering over the hill for quite some time but then only I appeared over the hill top and he assumed the noise was all mine alone...lol! Took some explaining and we agreed a baffle should go back in...

Sorry to all who waited for my burnout attempt... the bike, Eleanor, on account of her being such a b$%ch, lived up to her name again and threw a Check Engine Code during the slow ride. I couldn't ride and hold my thumb over the light so I had to listen to her complaints instead. Then she kept stalling out at idle and needing to be crash started. And as I ran a trackday slick on the back this just made for even more fun times. Burnout was supposed to have been more entertaining and chaotic with a few stupid tricks during it but I was too shattered from pushing it and to preoccupied with the Ignore Engine Light to step up. Sorry Cycletreads - 2011 I'll be prepared to step up or shut up.

Turns out, as usual, it was a minor problem that looked like a major problem. Battery was toast and once the spare charged up, no problems. Screwed with my head all night worrying about trailering her home. Sorry Alexis and Sam... I was a downer...lol

Thanks to Neil Ritchie for all the memories from 10 years plus of MX racing under his announcing. Was awesome to turn up to my first CK and hear the voice of NZ motorcycling over the speakers! Just like Woodville and Taupo GP days and I was searching for the monster Tabletop to bust a huge whip for him!!

Thanks to Campbell, Kenny and his awesome lady Krystal for the support this weekend! I'm hooked on CKs now.

Thanks to the Cycletreads team, nice work.

Thanks to the girl who never sleeps - despite riding a Honda your were nothing short of entertaining!

In training now for the naked hill climb run. Will they consider a race on bikes DOWN the hill climb? For us MXers that would be epic and enteraining as hell! Or a few jumps set up for a Free style demo?

Hey bro, yeah, that was me. Spent the morning putting the bike back together and fanging round on the Pit bike seeing if we could blow through the berm across from the tent and break a leg going over the bank or look seriously cool dragging a bar for the win. 6.45am pit bike racing... morning everyone!

Well my first CK, and wow what a rally. I arrived on Saturday via the wicked papas, to fresh snow on the ground and sunshine in the sky, (best way to arrive).
Set tent up, moved tent, (due to KB's and friends at other side of camp, plus safer walk back to tent at night/morning). Caught up with the South Island guys to hear of the sad and amazing news from CHCH, but glad to hear there families and house's got thou it mostly ok. I do hope this is still the case with all the after shocks and now the crap weather heading their way?

I got to meet some great people, big shout out to you all:Punk:, and I got to watch some amazing sites, with the likes of dancing leather man, in red!, wicked burnouts, Sly ours was the best and should have won, but I guess the judges did not like or could not see ya bike due to smoke and then been camo colour!!!! The hilll climbers, fast ones and slow ones ,runners with lids on (mental note to start training for next years helmet run:yes:). Good band, (just not all type of songs I like, I must be to young!)
Look though the photos to find the story of the night, they started out pretty good shots then as the night and drinks took over the shots were not so good of random things halve out of shot, so yes it was a great night all round.
Thanks to all, and I trust the south island lads are home a safe now resting up or fixing up? catch with you guys soon.

It was excellent. I couldn't make Friday night (work) so arrived saturday morning.

Promptly lost control and laid the SV down on arrival :done: Thank god it wasn't Mandy.

Bike was absolutely covered in shit. Thank god for brother in laws water blaster.

Set up tent and had a swig of whisky. Watched the hill climb and several burnouts. Hats off to the guy who popped the tyre and just kept going until there literally was no tyre left. Steel belts and shit flying off everywhere!

Wiener snatch was good to watch. Some hungry ladies doing the business. Although one must have been full as she promptly spat out every sossie she bit off.

A couple of good bastards kept the Saturday night entertainment flowing. Bikes were constantly being woken from their slumber and their rev limiters tested to make sure they were working.

Someone is also quite handy with the petrol bombs. Heard a few go off.

Tried my first "cigarette" too. Cleared my head nicely.

Bloody good and will be there next year.

The snow was the icing on the cake and made this Cold Kiwi into the epic it became.
I regard the Friday band to be the better of the two and despite the inclement weather chose to ride down on Friday.
The Pan European's screen and fairings and my Drizabone riding coat make wet weather travel tolerable. Life became a little more 'exciting' when the lights went out just south of Taumaranui.
LED daytime running lights provided enough light to see and be seen so I pressed on.
A helping hand from Nallac + ? and my tent was up. Gave a hand to another couple and then it was time to party. :Punk:Felt trolleyed within what seemed like half an hour! Very nice. Self portraits taken in my tent as the rain belted down seemed to belie the fact that I was feeling good and so should have been looking good.
As the snow turned on the visual delights many emerged from shelter to experience the 'fun'. Big fluffy flakes of cold, dry snow. Therein lay an conundrum. Do I spend Tomorrow at the CK or do I bail for the hill? - Plenty of time to decide - time to rock on.
Joining the Zumba devotees and dancing up a storm was a pleasant way to keep warm, happy and fit. :wari:Later I helped make Katiepie's hot-water bottles go cold and then joined the die-hards around the fire by my tent. Spent hours reveling in the acquisition of new wrinkles (smile lines) and depriving locals of sleep before I trundled off to bed; marginally before it became light.
Fresh snow, for those who do not or have not experienced it much before, is fascinating and thrilling. There were plenty of 'big kids' around my camp and plenty of photo buffs out to capture the wonderfully scenic beauty of the awakening morning.
I cannot remember getting into a fight but arose with the feeling of having been given a good kicking. There seemed to be an extraordinary number of people extolling me to partake of their cocktails the previous night. One of these may have been a mix of paint stripper and horse tranquiliser. I suspected that one, or some of the others, (or some of the other), may have been responsible for my physical 'not so well' being. Still, I'm tough and soon I was off and about catching up with old friends and making new ones.
Towards late afternoon I was feeling a little jaded. An important member of the 'Tug-O-War' Championship winning team, after being there fifteen minutes, injured himself being a knob and dropping his bike. Several other key members hadn't even made it to defend their title and so the decision was made to retire as 'Undefeated Champions' and go partake of a Nana nap before the night's festivities. Much fun and revelry around my camp fire with fine tunes blasting forth from an Ipod/powered speakers combo meant there was little chance of a Nana nap so I did the decent thing and joined in. Wow! -- it doesn't take much to get me trolleyed these days! Well actually.... I was obviously dehydrated and tried to alleviate this problem by dispatching the last half of my flask of Haig's followed by a nice Cab. Sav. :innocent:
Dinner, dancing and generally behaving like a delinquent remedied any inebriation and when the band finished, so was I.

Sunday was another picturesque morning.
Fresh snow and a nice day meant I had to go skiing. Well - it would have been rude not to.
A short blast into Ohakune, picked up my new skis, my guide and ride. The road up the hill is so beautiful it puts one in a very good state of mind to begin the days fun. In the early days this was a fantastic summer motorbike track however extreme weather and heavy traffic have contributed to a serious degradation of the road surface. The snow, on the other hand, was sublime. Wind blown pockets of powder on all the lee slopes. :woohoo:

Monday's forecast was for crap weather from here to there and back again so I bit the bullet, packed the bike and headed for the dark side.
Auckland, however, is not an attractive destination after a weekend of fun in the mountains.
I think I had better head for the 'Winter-less North' tomorrow.
Here's a few pics. As some have noted cameras get pissed really easily in the hills and so many evening art shots became crap shots.

My 1st CK :Punk:
day 1, left home thursday night just ahead of the southerly fueled up in Alex & it was starting to spit by the time I got to the Lindis there wasn't a cloud in the sky
arrived at miSTa's around midnight  sorry I woke you up mate (not)

day 2, up to a cloudless day with a frost :woohoo: what a day for a ride, gone by 7:30ish, meet GB at Amberly 8:00 fuel up then Kaikoura for a munch, rang mrs S to let her know where we are to find out it's snowing at home & it's on it's way up the Island, from there onto Blenheim for fuel needless to say the :ride: up the coast was pure magic, while waiting for ferry meet a few bikers from Ashvagus, Invergiggle, Nelson & CHCH
miSTa gets a call from home to tell us it's pisistting in CHCH, & looking at the clouds building up looked like it was coming fast, a few spits of rain then finally we get the call to go aboard (not be for time)
bikes tied down gear sorted, off to the lounge for a
with the southerly coming up fast it was thought that it would be getting a bit rough as the sign said moderate & a tex from doc 7m swells  off through the sounds & out into the channel to 7" swells
on arrival in Welly the wind picked up & the clouds closed in, we went down in :sunny: & when we came out :shit: there was about 4" of hail on the floor & it was just pissing down & it was dark
:wait: for GB to show rides right passed us :slap: miSTa heads off after him & we all catch up about 1/2 nth from the ferry
we made sels1 about 1900 to a warm shed for the bikes & gear then into a warm house for a shot or 2 with a :apint: chaser then pizza's :niceone: Gareth
2030 off to the beachcommer for a few  with some of the northern folk
nice to catch up with you all :Punk:
back to sels for another shot or 2 & then :zzzz:

Our first taste of this years event was picking an XV1100 off a couple at the gate. She was in complete agony and looked initially like a broken ankle but she got up on it after a bit. Hope they are OK now

That's no good. Oh, getting through the gate was ok and down the road. Where Suzy got tired and decided to have a rest was down the bottom next to the trees... My fault as I started off without straight front wheel, and she tucked....

Although at top it was like a mud wrestling pit by the time we got there saturday morning.

Ah yes - the crappy thin self inflating air mattress on a slope. Wouldn't recommend that again. Will all the snow you almost needed to get off the ground more I reckon. Oh - and find some flat ground so you stop slipping down to the bottom of the mattress in the sleeping bag. Gees, it seems I'm a slow learner. :cold:

day 5 up at day light s... show.. sh... coffee B & E's pack gone by 8ish
another great run down the coast to Kaikoura coffee & off sth, miSTa & GB head down the coast & i go inland road, not sure how the boys got on but the inland road was ice grit on most corners & 150-180 hr gusts not the most pleasant of rides but still a great one :Punk: got to Rotherham to find that my 2 daughters & 5 kids from town (Kaiapio) had been picked up by their sister as the others had no power, water etc...
so we bundle the girls & the kids into to cars then take them back to town make sure they are all ok & settled & then return other daughters car then it's heading sth again about 1730 as by then i'd had enough & just wanted to be home a few damp patchers along the way other wise a great run, getting home 2300ish & 2462k's

a big thanks to my 2 riding mates for making it the trip is was & for for the fun that was had along the way  pic's have been archived for later bribery etc

Brrrrrrrrrrrr, true on the toilets? I have issues with bike event toilets/any enclosed, freestanding, single bog after being locked in one (you know the sort with the bit of wood that turns to lock the door) I got locked in one once at a motocross, young bunch of really cool "boys" thought it really funny to turn the outside "lock" after I went in. They thought it even funnier when I begged them to let me out. I ended up rocking the fucker until it tipped over to get out.

they were regularly checked for paper but not often enough, every time I found them low I advised the right people, sometimes the punters could pass the message on , meantime I'm sorting out a better system so the club doesn't have to service them sometimes less than an hour from full to empty.
If you run out you can always use some of the yellow pages, make sure you use at least three sheets otherwise "your fingers will do the walking"

ok now I've posted in this thread better post some pics. Damn good weekend I stayed in Taupo friday night and rocked out there stumbled on a pub with an excellent band. Bit sad I missed the snow out the Kiwi though. Loved the pics of it on here.
I whore my Dirt KB t shirt at the Coldkiwi but it was a bit cold to walk round without the jacket on so only met one Kber and cracked a chat! You guys should take a leaf out of the dirt division book and print up a few KB flags so others can find your bike and camps. works well when there is 500 bikes at a x country!
Anyway had a bloody good time on Sat night after I scraped a very sore and embarrassed guy on a KLX off the ground LOL!!!
Quite good burnouts I hate to say it but the guy on the harley imho was best Did he win???
Liked the swallow the sausage comp but didn't it make you flinch when she spat SOoooo viciously LOL!!
Bon fire was good except it burnt from the inside and lost quite a bit of heat straight into the sky no complaints though.
And the band was quite good?? well I was a bit smashed so WTF sounded good to me!!

Anyway some pics

I wasn't alone at the Coldkiwi mate had a good bunch to hang with. Was a great weekend dunno why but I enjoyed this one a lot more than the last one!!

Well... I am on the hunt for some people I met at the Kiwi and was hoping they might pop in here, or someone might know them?

Three friends from Wellington. Andrew and Carl live in Porirua, and their other friend (sorry, name has escaped me) lives in Karori. I remember Andrew rides a Thunderbird.

These chaps all looked after me very well for the whole weekend, and I was terribly rude and buggered off in a mad flap of a panic on Sunday morning, without saying thank you or goodbye.

Hope one of you is a Kiwibiker, would love to catch up and go for a ride.

Cheers ears - sorry for being such a blonde :Punk:

Wow, holly cow, I am home now.
Friday was the start day – hey,
On the bike, totally syked.
Was looking forward to this rally,
It would sure beat sitting in front of the telly
A great ride, we were heading to Welly,
The ride up the East Coast
Was better than me Nan’s Sunday Roast.
On the ferry, we were all cheery, a few Canadian Clubs,
Smooth sailing meant we were not leaning over the railing.

Storm coming up from the South,
Not looking to grouse.
Off the boat, so much water and hail from the sky,
Could hardly see out me eye.
Fark a bit dark, rain a pain, totally insane.

Up to Kapati, whats that Smell? Hell’s Sels1, it was Pizza, yum yum in thee ole tum.
Shrek what the heck, Te Killa, that was bad, had me go mad, shalt never do it again, left me ill, needing a pill.
Reflux really sucks, to the pub for some brews,
Tired set in quick, since I was feeling sick.
To Bed twas.

Awoke after 4.30am miSTa yelling quake… what?
Must be fake. Goodness sake.
It was true, rang the wife, I think she thought she was through.
Sleep a little more then time for a brew, and some breaky.

Tough decision, south or north,
Up country we would be yo yo.
Wanganui,
Before we pass,
Time to get gas.
Rode through to Raitihi, great road and ride upon me steed.

Got to the big O, and had some fOOd.
Fish and chips went past these lips.
To the gravel road we travel’d which would take us to the site.
If you weren’t carefull the mud
Would have you and your bike “THUD”
On the ground.
The Griso and I knew the bizzo though,
Got up the hill to plant my tent like a stamp.

A wide open site with plenty – O– trees, a mighty tent, bar and band.
Quads in mud, tyres churning on the burn-out pad.
A mountain that looked like a fountain on the landscape.
A mound of wood, for a big fire was my desire.
We was shrewd and bought pre-paid food, sure filled the belly.

Met some faces from many places, forgot them all, but had a ball.

Calls from the mainland,
Things falling like sand,
More news of the quake,
How much more will they have to take?

Sunday was to be Funday, taken by Bren and Supersonic through some place I would have atop whitebait Pattie- Vinegar hill.
The road was ill, loved it, being wet,
It was a bit like riding a zit.
One day the dry will invite.

Back to Welly and thankin all those that made for a wonderful North Island experience.

The damp was camp into the place of the boat.
Wet and wild, nearly cried like a child.
On the boat, wet the throat, Canadian Club from there internal pub.
Rock n Rollin in anticipation of Christchurch, as we sailed the crazy seas.

At a home in Blenheim a shower and a sleep,
Not a peep.
Monday sinned, so much wind.
We all could have binned.
Following a K-Experience bus, I could not trust.
I was last and had to get past.
Up a rise and to my surprise, a gust of lust, hit that bus,
The damn thing jumped like a toad, near off the road. Twisted me throttle full load, goodbye to that.

Home I got, I was shot, greeted by the family, they were happy and a little sappy. Seems they were a little taken by all the shaken.

Thank you all, A Cold Kiwi has been, maybe, what the fark one day will be the Chilly Duck.

Pictures once I get my self sorted....with all the shaken, they seem a little jumbled in the shoe box.

Good to see ya mate, now its late
So off to bed to rest my weary head!!!
