It's that time of year again Folks, so whose all going?

Info and entry forms at www.coldkiwi.co.nz

Having been stuck on a desert island (Bahrain) for the last 10 months, I'm hanging out for a ride, and the Kiwi will be a great opp to cram in some 'Bikism'.....

Good luck with that one. I've always wanted to do it - but think it may be bit too cold for me to handle. Cold Kiwi I can handle, Brass Monkey in snow and sleet etc... not so sure ;)
But have a great time. Look forward to reading the reports on here about it

Courtesy of Wiki:

"The Cold Kiwi Motorcycle Rally,NZ's largest rally, has been held on the Plateau since 1972.Initially at 6 Crossroads on army land near the highest point on the Desert Road,it has now moved to a new site 6 km west of Waiouru on the Ohakune Road. The event is run by Ruapehu Motorcycle club in early Sept each year. The average temperature is -8C at night.Bikers sleep in their own tents but the club provides competitions, souvenirs, hot food and drinks, a bonfire, live bands and WC's.

The Brass Monkey Motorcycle Rally is a rally held annually in Oturehua, Central Otago in New Zealand. The event is held every year over the weekend on which the Queen's birthday is celebrated, usually the first weekend of June. Organised by the Otago Motorcycle Club, the event attracts around 2000 motorcycle enthusiasts from New Zealand and abroad. The rally gets its name from the fact that the venue is close to where New Zealand experienced its coldest ever temperature, - 21.6 deg C, "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey." To warm up rally-goers, the site boasts what is described as 'the biggest bonfire ever.' 2010 will mark the event's 30th anniversary."

Of course the actual temps at each Rally depends greatly on the weather on the weekend and it can vary immensely....

Apparently a high percentage of heat loss is through your groin.
Trying squeezing your old fella in one of those heated grips and you'll be sorted.
Hide it inside a sheepskin and .... I don't think I need to elaborate.

Hi Katie luv. Yep the rallys are open to everyone. Theyre goodfun specially if you like standing round a bonfire gettin pissed and talkin shyte all night. Theres a decent atmosphere and everyones friendy cos were all in the same no sleep camping nightmare. Prolly best to tag along with someone to your first rally as some of our compatriots can be a bit scary, particularly if you ride a Honda. Generally theres burgers and chips an copious amounts of grog. Flushing toilets are a luxury depending on which rally you go to so youve gotta leave your airs and graces at home.
Music, grog, mates, pukin and havin a good laugh, its all part of it.

Join us lot, shall be taking a more scenic route (altered a little from last year), as well as a support vehicle with the toys and bedding etc. Cold Kiwi is one of the better rally's, and its quite easy to turn up and spend ages trying to find familliar faces. Will be a ambling pace as we will have a mix of people riding up. Shall start off through the Waiarapa's, Pahiatua track, Pohianga Valley, Mangaweka then straigt to the rally

Cheers Eugene - yep definately keen to go now. Will be good to know someone else there for me first time. But yes, my boulevard doesn't like the gravel too much so would hope for a mostly sealed route up. Although yesterdays ride led me to some good mud and slush and I made it through just fine.

We will probably be aiming to leave Caltex Rimutaka at about 8am, so masterton by 9ish. We will more than likely stop off for a break at the Mobil on the corner of Renall and Ngaumutawa Rd (Mobil on the Bypass). Feel free to tag in with us then. Apart from entry, I presume the food costs are about the same as the Cold Duck, ie:
2 cans of beer = $5
hot chips = $2
burger = $5 (?)
fish = $3 (?)
cooked breakfast - about $10 from memory?
hangi (local iwi turned up with a cookup) - $10

The main cost is the piss.

Bring lots of warm clothes, or sweet talk a lady and shack up for mutual warmth

okies looks good. ill have no idea of what to do when we get there as ive never been to one before...

JMJ

I tend to find a spot to put the tent, and then set it up so its ready for me to pass out in when im really tired and disorientated (Read: wasted  ), and then I wander off and check out what's happening around the site.

The band usually starts up at about 7.

One of my mates is also driving up in the car with the trailer (as he does'nt have a bike licence) and will have the toys on the back (Yes Foxee, the scooter will be coming :2thumbsup )

the cold kiwi site didn't explain very well what exactly the costs are.. anybody care to enlighten me?

$35 for tickets (prepaid) i think its $40 at the gates.
Out of all the prepaid meals, I think the best for value is the Breakfast, the dinner queue is a little bit long for me. ($10 for the breakfast)
The food at the caravan is pretty reasonable, and isn't too expensive, however if you are running on the cheap, then get some meat from the supermarket and cook it on the fire.
The experience is priceless.

no sleeping bag - find a nice guy to keep you warm

no tent - find a nice guy with tent to keep you warm

No mattress - find nice guy, with tent, with sleeping bag, to lie on top of to keep you really warm

Booze - now you're talking.

Monsta doesn't like carrying stuff. You got room on the Bouley for mine??

Rally tent (modified especially for the Drunken rally goer)
Sleeping Bag
Blow up bed
Pillow
Blanket
Large Beer Mug
Bottle of Malibu
Racing spork
Extra Set of dry trousers, jersey, gruts and socks.

And ive got it down to such an art, that I can fit all of that in both pannier bags :)

I have hazy recollection of someone recommending using a survival blanket as a barrier between a camping mattress/pad and the ground - does that ring a bell with anyone? Tried it?

go over to the catering tent and ask for a couple of cardboard boxes great value also if you're a nana take a hotty, there's hot water in the catering tent all night to fill up with.
i spent last night at the site and there was a big frost on the inside of my van it was colder than a Fritzl Family reunion but warmed up quickly though

I've spent a couple of weekends at the site recently on working bees, we put in another two blocks of toilets, more hand basins and they now have lights. Chopped a lot of firewood for the smaller fires and of course the main bonfires are stacked high, mostly done earlier this year so dry now. A run around the site with a harrow to get rid of all the cow shit, new burnout pad, cleared some of the tress around the hill climb to get better views and runs and the list goes on.
Need to get hold of the caterers to stock marshmallows now, there's plenty of fires to toast them on...

I shall be taking the sealed route, passing through Masterton. I figured most would want to stick to the main highway, so havn't really bothered posting much more. Usually there's a bunch of people that take off from Paramata or somewhere like that and follow SH1 all the way there that most people opt to join.

If any actually do want to join, PM me and I'll send you the details. It will be about a 6 hr ride with a lack of straights, and leaving early.

Hey bullet- you gonna make the KC this year? I reckon the orange thingy would do well on the hill climb!

I just emailed you at work buddy! I'm coming!

I will stay overnight in Hunterville then head up on the saturday morning. I think Mr. W is also thinking of staying in Hunterville as well (odd we both have relations there, but then again Mr. W and I are odd people). I also hear Mr. W has bought himself a Gonzo too!

I won't be bringing Speedy - I don't have a rack. Instead I'll bring the good old trusty packhorse SV.

I've just convinced Nick to come as well.... If I can just convince Timmay, then the 'duck gang can ride again.

Maybe we should ask Lauren, Kelly and their german student friend if they need a lift ;)

Hopefully it won't be as cold as last year..... :sunny:

The same weather as last year would be good - it was lovely and fine & sunny on Saturday and quite warm throughout the day. There was a pretty white layer of frost over everything when I got up both mornings too. It's got to be cold anyway - otherwise it would be called the Mild Kiwi.

Here is a great tip! When your bike is that cold and you feel it will struggle to go[Ducati owners this means you! Hehehehe!] go over to the beverage stand and get a cup of hot water and pour it carefully over your battery. This works. Don't mention it!

Last year while I was waiting for the sun to turn my screen from white to clear I watched a nearby camper pull the cover off his bike to reveal a very nice looking Rocket 3. Then he tried to start it and the battery sounded rather sick. I felt sorry for him as he and his missus pushed it around to where they had batteries & jumper leads - them Rocket 3s aren't the lightest bikes in the world!

Luckily my beast fired up on the first try.

Anyone from Wellington heading up to Cold Kiwi on Friday morning, My plan is to leave Wellington at about 9:30-10:30am and have a relaxed ride up and arrive some time after the gates open at 3pm so I have plenty of time to pitch my tent in daylight

So if you want some company or if I can join other group that has a similar plan can you PM me or post something here.

I am flexible with time and don't mind taking a scenic route (but not to keen on taking to many narrow wet back roads at this time of the year).

Hey Leber.. I am heading up on Friday too, and have not yet really organised what I'm doing - like you I would like to get there in daylight to be able to set up my tent and get myself sorted for the night ahead.

I think I might be going with some freinds of a friend, a pretty large group heading up I think, leaving Friday morning.
