I purchased a 1991 BMW R80GS off Trademe last monday morning. Eddie very kindly sent a PM which I received 7:30 AM monday morning.
7:30 :15 I looked at the ad,
7:30:16 saw 'buy now $2400'
7:30:17 hit the button then after the congrats page came up went and looked at the pics of the bike I'd just bought.
7:30:19 told my wife excitedly I'd bought a bike & it only cost $2400.00
7:30:20 I got that look...
Any way there are always vans& trucks coming down so thought I'd spread the web& see if anyone knows anyone that's comingdown. I have also posted on the "backload" website for trucks looking to fill their loads.
I'll wait a couple of days & if noword I'll get it sent down by mc trans.
Once again thanks Eddie for that.

On Mon 7 Jun I'm going from almost Auckland to almost the South Island, if it's any help. I'll be returning from Maramarua to Wellington with room for a small GS in the van.
If anyone is riding the cross-country on Monday and could bring the beemer, I could take it from there.

SOunds great javahead. Thanks for all the offers for help people.
It may become a Kiwibiker relay.
The only prob with it is it has no WOF or REgo, insurance & since it hasn't been used much I want to get it home, do an oilchange & clean it up etc before riding it.

It's a long term project & for the price I wasn't expecting much - as long as the motor & box are ok I'm happy. Anthrax if you have any donor parts that you think it needs don't hesitate to drop them off too. The first things going will be those disgusting givi panniers. shudder...
Your think the panniers are bad you should see the mount set up. They wobble about all over the place. It looks to all be there and and in pretty good condition. Bit of weather damage and oxidation but nothing too drastic. Fuck it's heavy tho. There's a few spares in one of the panniers too even a spare side stand.

My boys and I are delivering Reighty to Andrew tomorrow morning at the Power Adventures enduro at Maramarua for the next leg of his journey. Reighty is in need of a little lovin which I'm sure craig will heap on him when he makes the journey over seas to the mainland. Padmei - He's getting closer and by 1am or so on tuesday morning he may be in Wellington. Get that Harley tyre off the front of him asap mmmkay! He's embarrassed to be seen wearing it.

Well, I don't know what it got up to in Anthrax's garage with its normally clean-living Bavarian friend, but now it's also been forced to spend a cold night in a confined space with a dirty little Austrian.
What it might now spawn is anyone's guess.

Man I can't wait to paint it. That colour is hideous.
I take it it is parked in your lounge Javahead while the kids are carefully getting rid of the oxidation.
I called up strait shipping & will only cost $120ish to get it from Welly to Nelson. Trouble is the straitsman is away getting surveyed so no go that way till next month.
I willl make some more enquiriesto see if I can fit it on a truck overthe stait.
How'd the enduro & CC go? apart from the mud.

8th June 2010, 21:39
It's not quite ready for a place in anyone's lounge yet. Safely sitting in the garage until you figure out how to get it the rest of the way south.
Rides were challenging - exactly what I wanted.

you can give it an oilchange & clean the carbs if you want. Actually if you do spot anything that needs replcing or looks dodgy let me know as I'm new to these - also what to look out for with them.
Also someone had a pdf manual for something similar? Any chance of a copy?

Eddieb
19th June 2010, 19:47
So here we go, the good, the bad, and the ugly.
1) The bike
2) 1 spare shock
3) Another spare shock, this is the one bought sperately
4) The right cylinder showing oxidization
5) The rear wheel, those bolts appear sound but probably need replacing at some point
6) The left header, most of the exhaust is like this.
Eddieb
19th June 2010, 19:53
More
7) A box of spare bits, clutch cables and things
8) Tools under the seat
9) Torn seat
10) The left cylinder with oxidisation
11) Footpegs and more of the exhaust
12) Front wheel

primo, wish it was in my shed, looks like a great winter project
Eddieb
19th June 2010, 20:04
So, up close it looks pretty rough but most of it looks worse than it is.
The oxidisation on the block and cylinders won't really clean up unless your really keen to put some time and effort in, probably with a soda blaster or something, but it's not something that impacts how the bike works.
The top of the carbs should polish up with some autosol or something a bit more aggresive and some elbow grease.
I took a kitchen scourer to the exhaust and that buildup just flaked off and it was all sound underneath. Again a scourer then autosol should bring that up fine for the whole thing.
The front spokes also have a coating of surface rust on them but the scourer was taking it back and they were all sound and tight.
The body work was pretty good. Inside the front fairing you could see it's been repaired but it's been done properly.
The 2nd spare shock looked like it has rust on the shaft so may not be usable without repair.
The front cover on the motor has a crack in it. It's not structural and doesn't need to be watertight but some liquid metal on the inside for strength would be a good idea.
Go to a wrecker and get hold of a 4 pot caliper off a later model K series bike, a k1100 or something caliper bolts straight up and gives you significantly better front brake.
I repacked that box of goods as the bike had been parked outside in the rain in auckland and the pannier leaks so the original box had turned to mush. Pannier mounts are real flexi. Thought the panniers were going to jump off on the trip to my place on the trailer!

19th June 2010, 20:47
I've only had 2 PD's and looked after one r90s but this beemer looks pretty good. a bit of oxidation on the cylinders and externally grubby carbs doesn't make a rubbish bike,
Christ, my last PD leaked from 5 seperate areas and still had the original brakes yet still kept up with underground on his home turf (well some of it).

Excellent pics thanks Eddie. Pretty much as I thought it would be. As long as it runs strong I'll be happy.
With the oxidation is there any thing you can do to prevent it reoccuring as far as a protective spray or something? I had some on my GB400 front forks which had pitted the urethane coating. I could scour it away but it never looked as good again.
Also since I'm not allowed to wrap the headers anymore:oi-grr: if I clean the exhaust up would the best prevntion be to paint it - what is autosol?
I'm working at a motorbike shop at the mo with a media blaster so may make use of that if I ever have need to take the cylinders off.I also have a tame upholsterer to look after the seat - hmmm imitation leopard skin????
I wish we had a bike wreckers here in Nelson (well Woodman lives close to Nelson but only specialises in one model )
Your thoughts appreciated

Autosol is a metal polish, it's a paste and comes in a tube. Get a tube and use it on the fork legs, pipes, mirror glass and anything else shiny after you've given it a clean/scrape as applicable and it should bring it up a treat.
Those pipes should be stainless, it would be a crime to cover them up, and in fact you shouldn't need to protect them, just give them a wash and wipe down with the autosol every few months should keep them looking shiny. You'll see what i mean you have have scraped all that gunge off. BMW use good metal on these exhausts. Don't you dare paint them you philistine.

2 more things.
Where the driveshaft joins the gearbox there is a rubber boot. Yours is perishing so this should be replaced before you take it through any streams, it should be ok for road and light gravel riding though as it's not badly gone yet. Once you cut it off you have to unbolt the swimgarm driveshaft thats under the boot to get the new one on. This requires removing 4 bolts that connect the driveshaft to the gearbox. When you do this get 4 new replacement bolts from BMW, they are only a few dollars each and you don't re use the old ones, they have been known to creep out if re used.
You can do this job yourself and it will make sense once you get into it, it does take it's share of skin and blood off your knuckles though as it's a bit of a tight space to work in.
The bike has an electrical fault, sometimes the ignition comes on and sometimes it doesn't. Javahead had a look at some of the wiring and it's showing signs of it's time outside. Various plugs are growing with fungus and the like so you might want to invest in a few cans of crc, a very small brush and a multi meter. We weren't able to start it.
It started here but wouldn't start after the wet trip on the trailer to maramarua so had to push it to java's van.
