There's a new learner motorcycle that will be hiiting NZ within the next few months! It's the Magelli 250R and rthe naked 250S. Origianally made for the European and UK markets as a 125, the US and Aussies get teh 250. It's not really a 250, but powered by a SOHC 2v air-cooled 230!! I believe the engine is the same as used for the Yamaha Scorpio.

So, what's the big Deal? Magelli are owned by a UK company and made in China by the owners of Benelli!! The Italian syles from the Benelli stable is aparrant as well!! OK, they're not as powerful as a Kawasaki Ninja 250R, but they're lighter at only 130KG, and look a lot sexier!! Cheeper too. The Aussie price is AUD$4,999 + ORC. This is the reply I got from Paul Nobbs in Aussie when I asked about the new Magelli 250's:

David,

Thanks for your enquiry about Megelli motorcycles and availability in NZ.

Megelli will be available in NZ within the next few months. Timing is not yet fixed, but really best to wait for local availability so you have local access for spares, service and warranty needs. Watch the press or drop me a line in a couple of months and the NZ plans should be finalized by then.

Thanks
Paul Nobbs

Stick a WR250 motor in it, or even better - turbo it. A guy in the US has been getting 100% HP increase with a turbo on a WR250 motor. The Scorpio motor I'm pretty sure is based on the TTR225 donk, so in essence is just a more docile version of the WR motor and should handle a turbo without too many problems.

Why Why why why why why Can they not put a decent engine in these! Even (dare i say it) a 250 twin.... just something that is slightly more capable for a good looking bike like this

They were originally designed for the UK market and had a 125 in them. Because of UK laws, they had to be under 12 HP, and so were 11 HP!! The Aussie ones are 18HP!! I believe they were originally designed to compete with the Honda CBR125, The Yamaha YZF125, The Cagiva Mito 125, Daelim Roadwin 125 and the Kymco Quannan 125.

Daelim Roadwin 125R can go to hell!

P.S. MV Agusta style rims. Cool.

OK, the Aussie distributors have understated the truth regarding this bike!! The little bugger has 27 HP!! It's more than likely got a similar engine to the Honda CBF250!! Don't believe me? Check out for yourself on the manufacturer's website:

For the UK market they were de-tuned/restricted to 12 HP!! I think the same happened in Aussie too. it's also amazing that in Ausiie (except WA) all 250cc 2-stokes are illegal for learner and P-Plate (restricted) riders, yet bikes like the Yamaha SZR660, Ducati 600SS, Suziki GS500F and Kawsaki GPX500R are all "learner approved" (LAMS) along with all 400cc bikes. Basically anything up to an including 53HP! I wonder is there will ever be a similar LAMS scheme ever introduced here?

If I didn't believe you, why would I believe the manufacturer's specifications. It's like Aprilia's figures of 70hp for the RS. But having said that...

This post is still amazing. If I wanted a nice looking, Italian-ish learner bike that went like a cut cat wtf would I bother with a 230cc single four stroke for.

Nice looking bike though. Give it a twin at least and it might have more appeal.

i Can't say too much because of confidentiality, but I what can say is "Believe what's on the manufacturer's website". That's what will be arriving later this year!!

HMMM... not as quick as a Aussie version Mito, (they're still unrestricted) but faster than a Kawasaki Ninja 250!! Even better looking and cheaper than both the Ninja and Aprilia RS125 too!

uhm...
i don't have information about the engine, so i don't talk of it.
but the bike it's a mess: the frame is a tangle of tubes, the rear fork is copied from bimota, mirrors and windshield from f4, fairing from r6...
i'd buy a ninja 250 with my eyes closed...

it's a pity, actually, 'cause from the rgv gamma and the old rs 250 i'm longin for a new, beautiful quarter...

It looks the way it does because it is manufatured by the people that own Benelli!! It will be arriving with a 27 HP engine too.

I have seen the 250 water cooled one in Wellington, it puts out 27hp not bad for a 250 4 stroke and the motor has been built for the bike ( it is not the Yamaha one) A very well designed and put together machine I wish these were around when I was a lad. would have been nicer than the old X7 I had. Looks a bit like a 1098

Hillbilly

I think we can all agree on this comment from that review:

"Even so, the intention is clear, and the Megelli 250R cannot be seen as anything other than a competitive entry-level motorcycle."

I recieved this email from Paul Nobbs, the Austalian importer for Megelli. Can anyone confirm this:

David,

There is now an importer appointed for NZ. Same importer as Triumph. So I assume you should start to see stock appearing in dealerships. You can follow up with www.megelli.com (wlmailhtml:{A61FC390-FA53-4FD4-932A-358779AAADA3}mid://00000002/!x-usc:http://www.megelli.com/) – this is the manuf website based in the UK.

Thanks

They're made in China, who isn't a signatory to the Kyoto accord. So, no catalytic converters or air injection systems! Got to have a close look at one and I'm seriously impressed with th build quality! They're really light too! Throttle response is awsome - no flat spots! I think this pretty much sums up the truth about the little Megelli 250R:

Nice light looking frame and wheels.. 130 rear, may even be a 3.5in rim.

How long till a motor in one blows up ?

Might make a good base for a bucket..

The only real issue I heard is that the sidestand needs to be re-bent as it sticks out too far and scrapes early.
