View Full Version : Canterbury: Chch to Hilltop MkII 28th May

Righto,
After the outrageous success of my last Chch to Hill Top ride, I thought I’d do another one. Yes, all of us enjoyed ourself immensely last time!!!- I went by myself…

I realise they have as much chance of predicting the weather correctly from 3 days out as I do of picking the winning Lotto numbers, BUT, the Metservice are saying Norwesters on Saturday, so it should be fine and warm. We won’t get many more good days, the grit will be down soon, and there may not be many more chances for a good fang.

Time and meeting place are all open for negotiation. So what say you? I have a nice new set of leathers with virginal shiny knee sliders that need scuffing- they will prolly still be shiny and virginal in 10 years time, but there’s no harm in trying eh! :msn-wink:

Cheers
Tony

We've got one other definite and a maybe. PMing a few people as these posts often get missed.

Cunning tossers solution to virginal knee sliders- glue some velcro to the soles of your boots, stick slider on, push into ground while riding. Oh yeah!

Not sure yet, but I guess just after lunch. The roads will still be damp otherwise....bring the K5 :devil2: Actually, maybe an early lunch is the go- heaps of cars seem to go over just after lunch.

Looks like the meeting place is by the Vets at the intersection of Halswell Junction road and the Akaroa Highway in Halswell. Time not yet settled but it looks to be around lunch time- going for what suits the most people. Please answer on the thread or PM me if your keen. I have a couple of 'keens' and a handful of 'maybes' so far.

This will be a ride at your own pace ride. Some guys will go fast, some will go slow. Some will try to go fast but still be slow (that would be me :ride:). We tend to stick loosely together untill the hill, and then it's every man for himself. Its a short ride, so at worst we'll only be seperated by five- ten minutes or so. There is no pressure to keep up/ slow down to stay as a group, just do your own thing. In light of the erm....events.. on the 22 ride up North, I'll do a head count. If there are a few I don't know I might even pass around a bit of paper to get names, bike, and if you trust me, phone numbers. I'll give out my cell number, so if you stop for a leak, breakdown or whatever I'll be able to find out.
Cheers

   But I've not yet got new chain|sprockets.

Next month I'll be getting new ones fitted. Haven't fully decided to do it myself for the first time or just pay some mola for peace of mind. The other required servicing I'll do but probably not the bleeding of the brake lines as it's also something I've never done before and could be tricky or at least dangerous if done wrong.

I know where that intersection is but which 'hill top' is being aimed for?

After the above and any commitments, I can finally start attending some rides.

Sorry, should have made that clear- The Hill Top is the pub at the top of the main hill on the road to Akaroa. Great view down into the harbour. For younger members worried about gaining entry, don't worry Dangerous is old enough to pass as your Dad....maybe even your Grandad :killingme Erm, so am I, I guess :weep:
Bugger about the sprockets though, maybe next time.

I'm keen to go... weather permitting of course. Definitely weather permitting for me as well.

sounds good, i need to check with the boss to make sure nothing else is booked in... Dont want to put a damper on the thing but i did that run yesterday at around 2.30 and quite a few corners close to the hills were very WET and angry, but I think the wind was coming from near south, so hopfully if its a north west on saturday it will dry out fast before 12.30 ish!

Any reason why we cant go all the way to akaroa?

Thanks Tony, but after having a few days off last week I'm stuck here for at least the next 2-3 weekends, and on top of the I'm giving one of my staff the w/e off. Have a great ride all, and stay upright.

Drum roll please: 12:30pm outside the Vets on the intersection of Halswell Junction road and the main road to Akaroa (might be called Halswell road at this point) in Halswell itself. Ride at your own pace etc etc as said before. Weather permitting for me. If the weathers dodgy I'll try for Sunday.

We'll go at least as far as the Hill Top. After that we'll see I guess. I probably won't be able to resist going at least as far as Barry's bay (bottom of the hill, Akaroa side)

See you there :niceone:

Sounds good to me. The rides on the events page definitely get missed a lot of the time. It's easy enough to search for all the Chch members, but there's no way of sending out a mass PM from what I can see. You can only send PM's to 5 people at a time. Gets tedious...

Cool i'll set this up, once its sorted you can use your finely tuned chch member locating skills to send them a PM with a link to the form on my site that will take their email address. Will work well!

I was given a ticket to the Super 12 final yesterday. Still hadn't told shewhomustbeobeyed about the ride, and the ticket wasn't expected, so I emailed her at work yesterday and grovelled. I was fully prepared to give up the ticket if I could only do one. Get your priorities straight!! :nono:

Looks like I won't be winning lotto this weekend  A southerly change has come through- it's still clear but now a fair bit cooler. Rain radar is showing some rain possibly heading for banks peninsula. Living in Heathcote, I can only see north and norwest, so I have no idea what it looks like to the south. Sky weather is still saying Noreasters and 19. So as far as I'm concerned we are still go. Over 2 hours till blast off, so it may well be 19 and dry by then.

I live just down from halswell junction, and its looking ok... there are a few darker clouds down towards akaroa way but they wind is pushing them to the east so i think they will be gone by the time we leave... ermmm this weather information is provided free from bren_chch and is under no warrenty of any strange words that i have no idea what they mean and this information may not be 100% correct in fact it may not even be 10% correct, therefor u cant beat me with sticks and put bee's in my pants if i am wrong.

I'll bring some wasps and iron bars then. :niceone:
11am rain radar shows HEAVY rain just brushing the peninsula. I think the actual hill will be dry.
Neomancer probably won't be coming as one of his kids is pretty sick. R1AaronKDX is out also.
So it's still on.

Not much time to write a report. But here goes.
After a longish wait at Halswell (bit of confusion) we headed off with 11 riders. We had a good mix of bikes- everything from Biffs brand spanking bird, 30UTD’s 160+hp Busa to my mate Petes 81 XV750. Not a bad turnout for Chch! It was quite a sight looking back at a log line of lights when I was in front.

The roads as far as Little River had wet patches on nearly every corner. We took it nice and easy, and there were no problems at all. We figured the hill would be the same, but the rain radar had been telling the truth- the road was totally dry all the way to the top. A bit of traffic stuffed the last bit, but all in all it was a blast.

We stopped at the Hill Top for a longish break- long enough for Biff to try Glens Busa out down the hill and back, and for me to wobble off down to Barrys bay and back, getting some serious arm pump in the process- amazing how you KNOW to keep your arms and hands loose, but it doesn’t always happen… That done we parted ways with some of the riders, and the rest of us decided to head into Akaroa for a snack, a coffee, and to talk shit about bikes. Good times.

The sun was a bit low for the return journey, getting in the eyes a lot, but it was still a good ride. Once again Dangerous gradually pulled away from me, but I rode the pace I was comfortable with and enjoyed myself. Maybe I could have found that extra little bit of speed to keep up, but there was no way I was overstepping my comfort zone to find out.Besides, D was probably just cruising anyway  I reckon that’s the secret to a successful and safe ride.

Cheers

Those pics bring back memories. Looks fine as. I was down there in Oct and did the Akaroa trip. That Hill is just the BEST bit of twisty in the country.
What's happening down there Guys sounds like the bike population is declining??? Too cold for sex or something or you all too busy following the Crusaders?

Great ride - thanks everyone.
Thanks G for a ride on the Busa.
Thanks to the stray bullock for not jumping out into the road.
Thanks Skyrider for the sit on the Guzzi. Lovely machine.
Thanks Tony for getting our collective arses into gear.
Thanks to the rain gods for emptying your load elsewhere.

Sorry to the bird I killed. I first though you were a large stone, but the feathers and crap on my jacket tell otherwise. If makes you feel any better you bloody hurt when you exploded on me.

Sorry to the Flying Dutchman and Skyrider for loosing you both.

Until next time. :ride:

Erm- thats about as smooth as we get. I think that's why I always ride better on that hill- the roads nice and smooth (mostly) so it's not throwing my poor worn out suspension into spastic fits.
You sure it's not just because you got a fright when the awesome power of the FZR blasted past your idy bidy Fireblade?? :devil2:

EDIT: actually, I reckon the FZR probably spat a bit of oil on the road in a jealous attempt to take out your Blade- after all, the FZR was once top of the big bore sports bike heap, then the Blade came along and made it obselete over night. She's bound to have issues...
