View Full Version : Rant - Speed = km/h, Distance = km

I did 140 kilometres on the way home from work yesterday, it only took me ten minutes.
Does that sentence make any sense ? Of course it doesn’t unless I have my own personal jet fighter. Speed is measured in kilometres per hour, abbreviated as km/h. Distance is measured in kilometres.
I am over the weather monkeys telling us the wind is going to gust to 50 kilometres or whatever, but now we have got the cops doing the same thing on TV defending the new and improved speed tolerance. How the hell can you be ticketed for driving/riding at 109 kilometres ? It does not exist, you are either travelling at 109 kilometres per hour or you are travelling 109 kilometres distance.
Is it just me that gets annoyed by this sloppy use of English, or, in KB fashion, do I need to STFU, build a bridge and have a go at NZ spelling instead ?

TV3 news last night, male presenter reported 13 people killed dead in British taxi driver attack. Opposed to the 26 who were lucky enough to be only killed alive.

...double of what, I'm still wondering.

"...10 degrees in Dunedin, but twice as hot in Christchurch..."
How anyone survived temperatures nearing 300 deg C in Christchurch is amazing...

I personally would prefer to be killed dead.

Try nearing 587 deg C in Christchurch to be twice as hot as Dunedin.

Nah. 10 deg C is 283 Kelvin. Double that is 566 K, or about 293 deg C.

Just heard this gem on TV 1...
"Will this stop the flow of oil?"
"Well if they're lucky it will. If they're unlucky...it won't."
OMG really? I never would have guessed!

I don't watch t.v.
Especially not the news.
I can't stand t.v. Forgive if I sound like I am elitist, high and mighty or above others - but the garbage they force feed us is beyond remarkable.
Thanks, I like being force fed one individuals opinions. Not fact, oh no not fact, but opinions and speculation. They treat us all like braindead moneycows.
I'll say it now, and I will stand by it for as long as I can foresee.
The media, the most powerful force in the world, will be our downfall.

Your rant has excited the BDOTGNZA, who have been a little quiet of late. Before you qualify for membership, you need to stop your irritating habit of putting a space between the last word of a sentence and a question mark or exclamation mark.
Aspiring to pendaticism comes at a cost. Don't order what you can't afford.

I have always found that having the question mark butting up to the last letter of the final word of the sentence makes it look a little unbalanced. It can become somewhat of chore ‘correcting’ spell checkers.
And while I am moaning can I complain about dates ? Like today is June the 4th, or even the 4th of June. It is not June 4 or even 4 June. That just sounds wrong. “Sale on Queens Birthday Weekend June 5 to 7” Pardon ?
So, where does one join this esteemed group, if I can be arsed modifying my punctuation ?

And I thought these reporters and editors studied "English" at school?! Correct spelling and grammar are clearly long lost skills!

Why were so many people attacking British taxi drivers in the first place?
I didn't even know we had that many British taxi drivers, thought they were all traffic cops.

Grammar has nothing to do with "balance". Misuse of punctuation and other grammatical standards merely makes abusers look ignorant. Sloppy is as sloppy does.

Serious question then for the BOGNOTZA brigade. When writing by hand do you leave a space between the last letter and a question mark or run them next to each other ?
I type the way that I was taught to write, and it was that you leave a gap, even if it was half a letter width.
EDIT - Just found out what BDOTGNZA means. I prefer arse.

Uh, no. Temperature starts at absolute 0 or -273.15 C. So when the temperature is 10 C it is already 283 above absolute 0 (also known as 283 K). Double this is 567 K or 294 C. Virago's maths is correct.
Question, what is twice as hot as 0 C?

my advice: dont watch TV for news. Its an entertainment organ, and only marginally useful at that.
best bit of TV I've seen in ages? that chick's boobs in The Pacific. It was all poignant and shit when her husband up and died.
