Yamaha Zeal tyres? 110/70-17 and 140/70-17?

hi guys,

in the market for a 250cc. currently looking at the yamaha zeal. the bike i'm looking at looks like it will need a new rear tyre soon ish. how much do tyres cost for this size? i would obviously need a tyre that is good in the wet and dry as i'm a L plate rider and don't want to feel some tyre slippage! what tyres do you guys recommend? sports pirelli demons? are they a good option? or are they at the top of the tyre range? any feedback is appreciated.

Hi Gibbo,
To be perfectly honest, almost any tyre you can find in that size will suit your needs.

As a learner, you will NOT be unleashing HUGE amounts of Horse Power onto the rear wheel.
Also as the Zeal doesn't exactly have the latest in Ohlins shocks, then you will not get the advantage of Pirelli Sport Demons anyway.

Tyres to stay away from are ones that look too cheap to be any good.... and second hand tyres....

Rest assured that the most important tyre to buy is the FRONT. On that, make sure it is a mate to the rear.
So, it might be best to look at a front that will suit your needs, and buy the rear now.... Just curious, what is on the front at the moment?

I would figure about 400 for the pair. So 200 give or take each.... Actually, cycletreads in AK do a rear for 171.

My Zeal went really well on a set of Dunlop GT501 Arrowmaxes. I'd recommend these.

Heres the Demon sizes available. The last pair i got (about 6 months ago) cost $330. Bit narrower than you need tho

The Dunlops like Hitcher recomends would be good or Brigestone BT45.

You may be able to get a cheaper option but spend the extra $100 or so and get real tyres. Better having the wallet $100 lighter than falling off with cheap tyres with as much grip as Gingernuts.

thanks quickbuck, umm...i went and had a look at the front tyre. wasnt too sure what i was looking for exactly. but i saw that the tyre MIGHT be a kenda brand. possibly a cruiser s/t? The tyre looks like it is brand new (or fairly new anyway). the sports demon passed a warrant today and seeing as i dont do many k's it might last 1 more warrant. it has 3mm of tread right now.

Does anyone know the price of fitting tyres? I wonder if i get cheaper tyres from say Auckland, the price of getting someone to fit them would make it just as costly as buying a set of tyres down here in Chch... thoughts?

On the cycletreads site: the gt501 cost me $424 at the moment (i am going to assume shipping would be free)

on depot4bikes: the sports demons would cost me $400

the tyres I need are ones that are equally as good in the wet as they are in the summer

Edit: i believe the gt501 tyres have a harder centre (for longevity) but I read on the trusty old internet that this may make them a bit more slippery in wet conditions? is this true?

I think I am going to end up getting a set of Pirelli Sports Demons, the only question i have is this:

What is the difference between: 110/70 - 17 M/C 54S TL and 110/70 - 17 M/C 54H TL

so the only difference is the 54S and 54H. Would I be out of place to assume the S and H means soft and hard respectively?
