We're off to the US & Mexico this September, and will be spending a week in New York. I'm having some trouble finding any half-decent accommodation in the city (At least on Manhattan Island anyway) for under US$200 per night.

Is that about right, or do any of you know of a decent place to setup base and explore the city?

Rooms to rent by the hour from $2.30 per hour.

Its all about location.

I stayed in NY a couple of years ago, at the Beekman Tower Hotel, which appears too expensive for your budget. I'm sure there is cheaper if you look hard enough however.

I personally found NYer's really friendly and accommodating, quite unlike anything I expected. I found walking to be the best way to get around around - you really take in the magnitude of the place better that way - even at night, providing you stick to well lit and populated streets.

Kick back and enjoy the place - it totally flew against all my preconceptions and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
