on a factory gas tank, you should travel at open road speed, close to 200-220 km
reserve be around 20-30km.

thats what i used to get out of my dr650 from the factory.

this weekend we had a new dr650 with us and he traveled 210 km before reserve.

hey i see you in masterton, interested in joining our group on our next local ride.

have a look on wairarapa ride outs for this weekends efforts..

Hey there Joe,
Thanks alot for that, good to have some idea of how far you can go :-)
Checked out your pics, very cool, looks like you guys get out and have a good time.
I would be real keen to get out on some adventure rides.
Have to get in touch.

I get about 180 - 190 on my standard tank. That is pretty much commuting k's. Don't know how far on reserve, once I get to reserve I am looking for gas pretty much straight away.

Just out of interest, is there anyone out there who has done the common mods (pipe, airbox, jets) and still managed to retain the standard economy?
For reference, in Oz with about 45 kg of luggage, across all types of terrain, on the standard setup we got 20 km/liter provided that we could get out of first gear or weren't caning it on the open road above 120 kph.

The worst economy we had was cruising at 130 to 140 in the Northern Territory when it dropped to less than 14 km/liter - as low as 12.5 on one occasion.

Hmmm. Might have to check out why my DR seems a little on the thirsty side. I don't wring its neck or anything, and I am pretty sure it is stock standard. Might have to PM Nordie for some ideas!

Check that the air filter doesn't need cleaning or is impregnated with too much oil as the first step. It's easily the most common cause of excessive fuel consumption.

Perhaps I should already know this, but what is a good indication that there is too much oil? Seemed pretty dry to the touch and the foam looked pretty clean.

Others will have a different rule of thumb, but I figure that if I can squeeze (not wring) any excess oil out of the foam, then there was too much there (in which case I add some petrol and squeeze it out again).

Hmmm. Might have to check out why my DR seems a little on the thirsty side. What sort of miles on the bike? Above 20,000km I'd be checking the needle jet for wear. Not needing much choke is an indicator it is worn and the bike is running rich.

Perhaps I should already know this, but what is a good indication that there is too much oil?Oil in the airbox that has run/oozed off the filter... but that's an extreme case I think.

Spread it around better, or pat it with some paper towel to remove some.

[edit: hang on, 180-190km commuting vs 200-220 on the open road sounds pretty spot on?? /]

My DR500 gets 25km/l while commuting. It has a tiny 9 litre tank but is good for 150 or so before reserve. I too take the extra 5 litre tank on the back when going a bit further. Going onto reserve in the middle of nowhere is always a bit disconcerting eh? I have a bigger mid-80s DR600 tank but it doesn't fit - I need to sort it, maybe get it cut and extended - it's too short - and then I'd be able to go maybe 300km ...

What are people getting with the IMS 18 litre after market jobs? I'm only good for around 265 to 285km to reserve. I wonder if my bike's jetted wrong?

I usually get around 20km/L so ~360-370 for the full tank

My IMS takes closer to 19 liters and I get 310km or more usually before reserve and safely 50 more on reserve. I don't twist the wrist hard everywhere though.

So maybe I am not doing too bad with 170-180 before reserve. I will take a note next time of how much gas, in litres it takes to fill it from reserve.

How do you do that? Man, I need to learn a bit more about carber....carburat....carburettors....fuel-air mixing devices. What gearing do you run?

14-15/44 at the moment.

14-15-16/46 when the chain finally dies.

The carb is pretty much as carbed out as the stocker can get.

I get 22 km per litre commuting from Upper Hutt to Welliington and about the same when on the open road sitting at 115 - 120. Less when thrashing it of course.
I recently got an IMS tank from justgastanks.com and found them good to deal with and it took just six days to arrive.
