:scooter:....Ladies and gentlemen.....:scooter:
ive been wondering about this for a while now, and thinking of putting a plan together.
details are under wraps for now... still got a bit more to arrange.
im looking for interest in this event from you adventure riders.
will be two days of as much coast riding and as close to the sea as I can get us.
on beach tracks, gravel seal and grass.....
yes you will more than likely get stuck, and we may even have to build our own crossings to get through.. but thats the adventure of it.
im working with the use of school grounds for camping and a meal in the hall for the Saturday night at the half way point. and possible Friday night camping and a meal at the school also, for travelers coming to the ride.
or possible scouts den.
the date I'm working on is the long weekend of 23rd-24th 25th October, Labour weekend
so please let me know if this is up your alley.
open to all New Zealand riders..
Final details are to be worked out.
ive added a calendar to keep a track of numbers..

okies, track was in great condition all the way around. stunning views as all ways.
so we rode all way round to the boundary gate, was locked but was expected to be.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_r4RTcX8Awjo/TBMZ9xcsK7I/AAAAAAAAH3Y/Y9la6mQ2b2Q/s912/IMG_0212.JPG
we went to have a look at the joining section between farm stations. sadly what we found was not good news, a large section of the track has fallen 300 odd feet to the sea below...
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_r4RTcX8Awjo/TBMZ86IDbeI/AAAAAAAAH3U/Eg1RDgsWZVw/s912/IMG_0211.JPG
in this pic you can see the track on the face of the hill, large section missing about center pic..
bugger, there is only about 2 km on the other side of this hill and we would have made it through to next farm..
never fear, on to next farm for joining access,,
we have all ready filled day 1 of the weekend, and now just sorting out day 2, we have 3-4 coast options available so never fear you will have a blast..
next up date soon.

would have tied in a large section of the wairarapa coast.. never mind, a small reroute,
in a couple weeks time we going to check out our next option..

Could you 'go down' ? :) you know.....to the beach? at a low tide or any other time, from earlier on the track if there is one? I presume it is really rocky coastline....:(

hay mark. not really an option riding along the beach, just not possible to get over the small river, and yea theres some nasty big rocks down there, other problem with the beach is its very soft pebbles, so getting stuck all the time would not be to much fun.

hi there at this stage, entry fee for both days is around $50. this covers station access and camp ground and meal. this price is to be confirmed.
we have one more coast station to have a chat to, and a look around the coast on his track to see if its big bike friendly.

at this stage day 1 will be starting in wainui, with a north bound loop and finishing at masterton. day 2 starts masterton, finishing at masterton with a north bound loop on the east coast.
you wont be able to back track on day one as gates will be closed and locked behind us..

but there is no need to carry your panniers around the coast as they could be left in the scout den.
will post up photos of problem areas when we get to going out for our recky rides.

I am keen - still at the "penciling in" stage, but will book on the calender as soon as I am sure.
The "big" (16 litres) Aceribis tank I ordered for the DR350 sometime last year finally arrived this week. Offered it up for a trial fit and it seems like it was made for the bike. It was, but I was still expecting the fit to be problematical! Took a while but still pretty good to be able to get one for an obsolescent bike like a DR350.
Good work with all the organising. Thanks.

hi Phil.
at this stage, at a rough guess...
30% seal / road.
40% gravel / metal road/ farm track
15 % grass / farm track
15 % sand / beach :scooter:
this sunday im going down to welly to try catch up with the last farm station owners, and im hoping to travel around the coast on there land to the only nasty section i can see that may give us a little,,, lets say adventure riding... very short section, that would require your partner to walk across. to be safe..
the rest of the two day event will be ok 2 up
im hoping the weather has sorted its self out, by the time we ready to ride. 90% will be ok if we get a little rain, so a good duel tire, but not a full knob will do you fine.
there is one section later on day one, which is grass / dirt track, which im still to ride,
i will post up a report on this section as i get in there, wont be for a couple more weeks.
some of the sand will be very soft, and one old paper road on day two will require us to have a low or out going tide,, :shit:
some of the shingle beach will also be soft, but us chaps down here have been through these sections before with little trouble on bigger bikes.:shifty:
JMJ
Phreaky Phil
1st July 2010, 12:25
Cool. The soft sand and shingle will be the hardest 2 up. I have a near new Mitas E09 i'll put on the back and something rerally grippy for the front. Good traction when 2up riding helps overcome the extra weight. A little bit !!!

1st July 2010, 19:14

So long as its not miles of soft stuff. Dawn can always walk a short bit like that. If I can get down onto the hard stuff we be sweet. Might go for a spin up 2 Awakino and play on the beach. I havent ridden the GS on the beach much, kind of avoided getting sand into every thing. Mind you, rode miles on my DR when I had it

Sit at my pc and watch it ;)
I have about 8 minutes of helmet cam footage from sitting behind you when we were going over the farm tracks that were the mornings first off road section. It didn't make the cut I put up on Youtube and needs to be edited out of an hour long recording.
Bugger its so far from here to your PC......

First time I've been on here in ages!!
Not even sure that I'm in the right thread here but was directed here by NanaMac :) She's filled me in a little bit about whats happening. Unfortunately, the rally I take part in starts that weekend but it does finish in Wellington the next weekend! :)
Anyway... I digress.. hopefully I wont make myself look like an idiot here, but I heard something about doing some fundraising along the way? Am I correct? :) I also heard, in addition to that, that you guys would like to (MAYBE) give it to the rescue helicopters. I work for the Auckland one now, and have spoken to my bosses, and they would be happy to help you out should you need anything. We can split it between different helicopters too, coz I think thats what you wanted to do. But they're all there for the same reasons :)
Let me know and I'll get the bosses into action!!

Yeah great news for me, I am so pleased, I have itchy feet at the moment and feel like a good few days away on the bike is just what I need to cure that.
And being a fundraiser for the westpac helicopters is great (my brother got a ride in one a month or so ago), I will be sure to wear one of my many Huffer westpac rescue chopper teeshirts.

Yep he is fine. Just a broken arm. He was racing XC in the south island, somewhere pretty remote, he was damn happy with a chopper ride vs about 3 hrs in a 4x4 then another 2 in ambo. The xray is what his arm looked like after they stabilised him for flight, imagine what it was like before that (infact don't it makes me queasy to think about it).

I think it being a motorbike with a 21 inch frontwheel made it represent the majority pretty damn well.
I am surprized you did not point out the fact it is not the right chopper for that region, sheesh!

its just not as easy as,,
aye farmer dude.. it be sweet aye if i bring a shit load of bikes in your farm and go for a Cain.......................
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
thing is, i had to tie in eight different farms, i needed all farms to be in together, to make the ride work.. 3 farms bailed, we had to cross one farm to an other.......
i also had to tie in DOC land and Maori land....
farmers pull out,, linking the farms together not possible any more,,ride fuked...end of story..
on to the next adventure..

Farmers are funny things  Phil; and myself have been out exploring a lot and tying a lot of things together for a plan that will hopefully fly next year :shifty: Some are as good as gold, others are all "OSH" and worried about people finding their cash crops
I can understand them fully (no I don't have a crop). I would be reluctant to allow a bunch of people I don't know ride motorbikes across my back lawn
Thanks Joe for trying to get this off the ground, don't give up on it fully mate, one of the things we have found is that farmers will change their minds sometimes

MMMMMMMMMMM!!!!
Well ,farmers are under all sorts of stress these days, weather it be financial, weather, regional council gestapo,(lucky on that count,in the "Naky"),hunters--pig--possum--goat--etc.And some decide,---stuff it,why should I risk haveing more stress by giveing permission for a bike ride.
In saying that ,don,t get TOO negative Joe.At least you gave it a bash.
Cheers ALANE

The timing isn't too flash either. Most farms are carrying a lot of stock through spring/early summer. The thought of a whole heap of bikes cutting loose on their property turns them off.
Also there's all the ACC stuff. If you get injured on their property, they could be liable. :shit:
If planned for late summer/autumn, and the farmer understands what we're about (sightseeing, not hooning :innocent:), we might get better luck.

If access around the coast from Wainuiomata is still possible then we could do that and then have lunch at Martinbourough.
Then do the loop to Gladstone via Hinakura at stay at Featherston or Masterton.
Sunday head up HW52 and out to Akitio for lunch via Soldiers Rd.
Back up towards Woodville via Towai Rd and Makiaro for a nice easy finish.
