View Full Version : Cancel your indicators

A scooter nearly introduced itself to my driver door today (yes, I was out in the car) at a roundabout. I had waited for two cars from my right, and a scooter following a short ways behind them was indicating left. Luckily, it's a roundabout with a dedicated left turn lane, and since he hadn't moved over into it, I waited to see what he was up to. Sure enough, straight through the roundabout he sailed. What was especially amusing was watching his eyes. Not one scan to the left to observe traffic, just dead ahead tunnel vision right through.
Easy thing to forget though, and something that can get you into a lot of trouble around town. Had there been no left turn lane, I would have moved onto the roundabout. What keeps me safe on a bike is police paranoia: I'm constantly checking my speedo, so a missed indicator cancellation gets noticed fairly quickly

That's how a friend of mine wrote off his bike and stayed on ACC for a few months.
To be fair, it was both parties fault (his indicator was still on, person that drove into him didn't give way) but still ...

Becoming Road Kill and it being my own fault for not cancelling my indicator has been a long time worry for me.
9/10 times I am fine, but if I get distracted I can sometimes forget. Stupid but a unfortunately true.
I am concerned that the proposed law change, whereby the need to give way to traffic turning right across your path, will initially lead to more confision and accidents.
There are relays you can buy to make your indicators cancel automatically and also give you a hazzard warning dual flash function.

I guess useful stuff like that is a bit too rich for your average cheap chinese scooter.

Cheap rego on old bikes, but is it worth going back to 6volts (I dont think heated grips come in 6volt?) and ignition points?
Some moped class scoots don't have repeater idiot lights just an audible clicking, one of the little things that have to be sorted before trying to VIN one.

There are lots of other times to check they are off too, especially on the open road.

possibly - he only lasted an hour and a bit after posting that - then he never posted again (you can check his profile to confirm) . spooky.

Yep I was a serial offender (forgetting to cancel my indicator). The solution for me was a StopIT! indicator reminder. I now have one fitted to my bike and we also sell them on our web site. Funny thing is no one ever says they are buying an indicator reminder for themselves ...it's always for a friend or partner!

Always check indicator has been cancelled after a turn or lane change....
I wonder about self Cancelling ones tho because u might indicate, slow up in a small que or something and then they switch off and you make a turn. in saying that never seen/used them b4 so I dont know what I'l talking about

All the factory self cancelers I have used worked on time and distance. You can sit at the lights with it going all day. The only time I cancel them myself is when overtaking.

11th June 2010, 00:00
Seems to me you could make self-cancelling indicators based on lean angle measurement, in the same way that a car uses steering lock (although probably an electronic solution rather than mechanical). Wouldn't be perfect, but neither is a car.

I recall reading that (our old zook) indicators cancel after 10 seconds of traveling (in excess of 8kph? (I think was the speed). I guess the timer only works when the speedo tells it to.
I'm waiting for the day the govt removes the give way to the right rule, it is so stupidly dangerous for bikes!
If you forget to cancel your left indicator there is an accident waiting to happen, especially because the speed of a bike is so hard to judge.
I've had a couple of occasions where my indicator has been left on, ususally in the morning, and a car has started to pull across my path. Now I cancel a lot, just as something to do whilst riding... just in case i forgot last time.

Two excellent features on HDs which should be on all bikes: indicators which cancel and a locking side stand. I can't understand why all bikes don't have the HD side stand system.
I won't mention all the other good things about Harley Ds - that is enough for one day.

BMW ones self cancel after 10 seconds or 100 mtrs, whichever comes first (not sure if those are the exact figures, but about that).
But, the 10 seconds counter stops if you are stationary (or below some very slow speed). So you can leave them going at traffic lights.
Bugger for lane splitting though.
Over the years I've acquired the habit of just constantly prodding at the indicator button whilst riding. Catches me out on the older Suzukis though where you have to manually centralise the switch.
