Greeting Gixxer riders,

Reading forums (KB and others) I've found that all too many Gixxer riders experience the FI indication that relates to the C46 - exhaust set problem. I has found ze cure.

Background:
The FI indication on your bike display usually comes up due to the set valve not being able to close and open properly when you throw the kill switch on. You will notice the gentle humming sound the bike makes at startup when it closes and opens this valve.

If the valve cannot fully close and open, the bike shows the FI error and keeps the valve open for the duration of the ride, resulting in slight loss of mid-range power. The set valve remains closed when riding under 6000rpm and opens up beyond 6000rpm under normal operation, but in the event of an unsuccessful close and open at startup, it just remains open. Its safe to ride the bike in this condition though.

Solution:
Start the bike even if the FI indication shows. Ride the bike upto about 40-50 km/h on the 2nd or 3rd gear. While the bike is in gear, simply deploy the kill switch mid operation and switch it back on. The FI indication and the annoying red light disappears.

Explanation:
One of the most common causes of the set valve failure is not enough battery power to carry out the close and open operation at startup, killing the power and turning it back on while the bike is running provides enough juice to rectify this and bob's your uncle.

This should solve this annoying problem for may a Gixxer riders.

You're welcome.
Donny

It could be that the valve is "seizing" on cooldown and frees up when the exhaust and valve is hot, if the battery didnīt have enough juice to open the exhaust valve it probably would struggle to turn the motor over on startup.

Right, duely noted.

I remember when I first got my SV on a group ride. We stopped for a regroup (you know how those thursday night rides are) and when I cam to start the thing, a big Red light and FI - check. Freaked out and cought one of the last guys before they pulled off. 'Put up your stand, you nana!'

Rather than just flicking the kill switch off then on whip the clutch in and 'crash' start the bike at speed as well. My Fi light comes on on start up once every few weeks due to this, so I'm reasonably well practiced, and I've found that simply killing the bike then flicking it back on can sometimes cause the bike to backfire.
