Removing my cat...

Thinking of keeping the stock muffler on my K7 GSX-R but removing the catalytic converter.

Anyone here done it? or knows who does in Auckland? or have any suggestions as to why it should or should not be done?

Why - don't really see the point if you are keeping the stock muffler. Plus you may find you'll fail a WOF as they are starting to look for stuff like that.

Want more power - get the 750 !

It depends on how much money you have to spend. If you want to do it for a reasonable price then go to an exhaust shop and ask them to put a straight bit of pipe in place of the cat. You might even get a bit of cash if you take the cat to a metal recycling place.

Personally I am quite happy with the stock sound and power etc, but if there is anything to be gained... the environment is screwed anyway now that thanks to BP.

Okay, a couple of thoughts. I would recommend the Yoshi full system and a PowerCommander as being the correct upgrade. Removing the Cat will make a small difference, but it will make a difference to emissions (which harms baby seals and old ladies).

I wouldn't bother with just the cat removal by itself. I have full Yoshi systems on both my Suzuki GSXRs (1000 and 600). The 600 responded incredibly well to the Yoshi upgrade. It also sounds pretty neat. The biggest difference is that the throttle is no longer so wooly down low, and true enough, it did add some power up top, the real difference is to how incredibly good the throttle control is.

The Yoshi systems are stupidly expensive if you're stupid enough to buy here in NZ, but there are at least a dozen on line shops that will have it landed quickly and cheaper than you'd imagine.

Now, if the Vixen was mine, I'd forget about doing any modifications other than a set of BST wheels, and carbon rotors. Honestly, this set up makes such a difference. You're more than welcome to come have a play with my 600 on the race track - you'd be amazed how good these 600's really are...

Yep. Had exactly the same experience. So I made the cat door one way only - out. My cat has now learned to hook it open from the outside to get in...smartarse...

Frankly, MBB I am miles away from any mods to the 600 yet - although I did get offered a full exhaust system by the guys I bought it from.

I don't really want the throttle any crisper thanks - I already have enough trouble keeping it vaguely legal...half a second of any twist adds 20km/hr to the dial...after two years on an SV, the contrast is still pretty obvious...

1. it is KB so it is a membership rule to make up shit and post it as fact.
2. read somewhere recently they are looking at the cat thing and are planning to introduce that if it was originally fitted with one it must retain one.

Makes sense from a Government point of view otherwise why have the friggen cat requirement on vehicles if you can just pull them off! It may not be here this month but it is coming. Every year they add new shit.

It will not be long before they are sticking a rod up the muffler to measure gasses and having that as a WOF requirement.

Out of interest I also read recently that Yoshi has just offered it's first cat fitted pipe - they are working on them for new systems as it is expected that they will be required by law globally if originally fitted. Of course they claim that there cat is better than the original.
