1990 Yamaha FZR1000 - coolant

I currently have my mate's FZR1000 and am checking everything for him. I have done just about everything except check the coolant but can't find a filler cap to check the condition of the fluid etc. I undid the tank and lifted it up on its hinge but no luck. Methinks I'm gonna have to take the fairing off. Could someone tell me if there is an easier way?

The cap is directly on the top of the right tank of the radiator (http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/showschematic/m7195sch132248). You should be able to remove PART 32 (http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/showschematic/m7195sch133602) to access it.

If you can I'd do a full flush. Coolant lasts 2-5 years & then loses it's ability to prevent corrosion. This aint what you want in a 20yr old ally engined bike. On my Exup it came out rusty coloured. Longer you leave it the more it will corrode a path to freedom.

It looks like a total bitch to get to but once your there it really is quite simple. pull the tank & root around under the carbs & there will be a rubber mat you pull up to expose the thermostat housing. Pull the hose off the water pump on LHS of engine & drain. The undo the thermo hsg bolts & take thermo out. Use the garden hose & flush both ways for several mins. Bang it all together & refil, run check. Without taking the thermo out you can't flush it properly. I tried & failed & wasted some new coolant.

Nice thought F5Dave. The fairings are still off mine after an oil filter and oil change (garage cold and dark and scary and the road is wet anyway)
I'll just add that to my 'to do' list
